We Rebound the Basketball we beat Illinois. +29 Advantage for Illinois. We gave up 24 Second Chance Points

19 offensive rebounds for the Illini.

+29 overall Rebounding advantage (52-23).

Way too many 2nd chance points.
Thanks captain obvious. With the current starting lineup we have no chance of doing that. Patrick can’t or won’t rebound, Rebraca is a Forward trying to play Center, and then we have Murray. Going to be a long season against physical teams.

Look at the roster, where are the boards coming from in this matchup? You can make some slight tweaks but 9 out of 10 times Illinois is out rebounding hawks by double digits. Winning the turnover battle is how you soften that blow and they did well. Iowa just needed to screen their shooters more effectively and knock down their open looks and they still would have won.

I dunno what to think. A lot of things had to go wrong to lose this one. If we don't TO to end the first half, we're in it. They made an unintended banker and a desperation three from way deep. If we shoot better at the line we win. Kofi shot his FT better than Keegan tonight. The refs didn't call several over the backs from Kofi, which probably cost us 5 points.

Our athleticism bothered the crap out of them. They turned it over with regularity. Their misses were so bad that the balls were clanking right back out to them.

I agreee but he can’t handle many minutes anyways. He was winded the little he played. Also don’t think he has much experience with switching on screens, possibly Fran would have wanted him to stick with the screener on that inbound pass. Great potential but may be far away from covering a lot of little things.
I don’t disagree but would have liked to have seen 12-15 minutes for him. He did well on Kofi when he was in there. We were more than doubled in rebounds.

It was really frustrating that Fran didn't use that last scholly on another big body. This issue was clear as day and addressed with just one PF Transfer from NDST. Uuugh...this is a pretty good group who is just missing a huuuuuuge hole in the middle.

Rebounding definitely killed us. JBo on defense also was a killer. To Fran's credit, he didn't play JBo much in the second half.

Keegan looked a step slow in the first half. Probably still dinged up with the ankle.

Perkins had a FANTASTIC game. His defense at the point of the press had Illinois all kinds of flustered. He singlehandedly held us in the game for a stretch in the first half with both his offense and defense.

The whole second team that Fran subbed in the first half brought huge energy and defense. Changed the complexion of the game.

Just have to hit open shots and free throws. Even with the rebounding differential, they do that, they win.

Kofi is an excellent rebounder with his size, and a good shooter close to the basket. A few feet away though, he puts his shoulder into the nearest defender between him and the basket and doesn’t seem to get called for a foul. That’s all reputation and respect from the refs.

Perkins needs 25+ minutes a game. He's clearly the best overall guard we have.

Ulis also played well. This is a good enough enough team to make you frustrated when they lose.

Fran is a good coach, but he was a step slow tonight starting in the second half. When Illinois really tried getting Cockburn going he needed to bring in O to match his size.

You know he was winded how? He wasn’t on the court long enough to break a sweat. Another brilliant coaching move by Fran. Some very unique combinations on the floor when Joe T. Should have been in with Uhlis & Perkins and maybe Kris & Keegan. Connor should not be taking minutes from Sandfort.

Agreed. Instead of taking Joe T's minutes, he needs to take CMac's. Connor plays good defense and is a good passer but he is a liability with his inability to make shots. He didn't make a single one in shootarounds. I like the kid but he just is not a good shooter. If he were 6'8" instead of 6'5" he'd be a heck of a player.

the worst inbound defense was the pass over the top with 3 seconds on shot clock for uncontested 3ball shot.
I think that was Grandison over Jbo who is too short to contest.

JoshO could have played what the same minutes he did vs Purdue.

PMAC has been averaging 2.3 rebounds as starting "3." That is the same position that JoeW gave us over 6 rebounds last year and KrisM is giving us close 6 rebounds part time from that position.. PMAC is too soft to rebound inside and at 6'9 he's too slow to get those long rebounds off missed 3s. PMAC can score and he can play in press and zone.

Fran needed to play more JoshO, play man so he they could stick to shooters. The zone is fools gold because your defenseive rebounding percentage drops 10-20-30%. Both Murrays and Perkins should be playing starter minutes.

This is bullsh!t. He did just fine Friday with extended minutes! Held his own on PU bigs all night .No excuse for not playing him tonight when Cockburn was abusing FR all night . Just bad rotation by Fran period

This is the correct answer. Everything that could go wrong went wrong, and somehow we were still in the game. There was a lid on the basket for most of the 2nd half, including ft’s. Hate losing a game like that, but I don’t think you start throwing blame around for it. They out rebounded us, we forced them into a bunch of turnovers. They shot well and we didn’t. That’s the game. We shoot even decent and we win.

We can't control being unlucky or having an off night at the FT line or some bad calls from the refs.

What we can control is our effort when it comes to boxing out & rebounding the basketball.

Better effort on what we can control results in a win tonight.

we miss Nunge big time

His stats thru 8 games:

22 min
11.3 ppg
6.9 Rebs
2 Blocks

54% FG
75% FT

21% from 3

Need to play JO more
josh wasn’t the answer. we did the best job with a smaller quicker lineup. fronting with back side help. josh got beat three different times in the second half. great team effort…really like the pressure on the press. a few makes on open threes or fouls called on their over the back offensive rebounds and we beat a top ten team.

Well, we did shoot "even decent." 45% overall, 35% from 3 and 68% from the FT line.

If this game only came down to a missed shot here and there it would make this 4 point loss more acceptable.

What is not acceptable, however, is our effort rebounding the basketball, which led to a -29 rebounding margin and 24 second chance points for the Illini.

I don't think Illinois is ranked anymore.

I will only be shocked on the nights Iowa outrebounds a Big Ten opponent. It was clearly an issue before the season started and it will be when it ends.

Can you (or anyone who wants to reply) name a season during the 12 season Fran era where you can say, damn, that was a great rebounding team?

Maybe 2014-2015 (?), when they had:
Aaron White
Gabe Olaseni
Adam Woodbury
Jarrod Uthoff

well we scored more points off second chance+turnovers than they did, and also got up 10 more shots. If illinois lost they could blame it on turnovers just like us blaming it on rebounds. And this game does come down to a missed shot here and there, keegan missed idk how many layups that he typically makes and his first 3 ft’s. We were shooting 45% from the line at one point in the 2nd half. Take the last couple minutes of the game out and we shot the ball like shit.

19 offensive rebounds for the Illini.

+29 overall Rebounding margin (52-23).

Way too many 2nd chance points (we gave up 24!).
That’s what happens when you front the post. You either let Kofi catch it deep with position playing him 3/4 or behind, or you front him to prevent that and let him get great position for the rebound. Pick your poison.

Now be honest,.. Is anyone here really surprised by the fact that we were out rebounded by this Illinois team?,.. We know our strengths and our weaknesses so the only surprise here should be that we actually still had a chance to pull this one out..

Points from.......2nd Chance
Turnovers...............Points........TOTAL

........8............................24...................32........Illinois
.......26...........................11....................37.........Iowa

Full Box Score is here:

So we came ahead in the turnover/rebounding issue (not excusing the poor rebounding) but everyone else seems to be forgetting two other stats that were a major difference in the game.

3 pt makes
FREE THROWS

There is also the problem.

There’s no reason that you still can’t get TOs with KM2x, Perk, Ulis/JoeT AND rebound if you have either Ogundele to a lesser degree Rebraca.

the issue as 24 says, is there was most of the game where neither Rebraca OR Ogundele were in the game,

even so small as KM, Sanford and ConMac,

the 29 Reb is on fran as much as his players, as you can ask small lineups to match up with a font line that goes 6 11 and 6 10
