Wisconsin exposed every weakness we have. Rebounding, defense, ability to get shots off.

I just don’t see what the McCaffery boys do for this team. PMac is out of control most of the time and plays horrible defense and doesn’t rebound. When Conner is in the other team can double anybody they want because he is a zero scoring threat.

They are the coaches sons, he needs to go and take them with him.
He sucked before them too.
Anyone think we are ever going to win the big with him??
If not, next man in.

Fran needs a defensive coordinator--- a Phil Parker.

Dillard and Speraw.....sure they are nice guys, but winning coaches have a coaching tree from their assistants getting jobs.....Fran has two guys that put down roots.

Send Fran on the road to spot talent. Hire new assistants to do all the coaching ;).

But seriously, I'd like an assistant shake up, but does Fran emphasize defense or rebounding?.... Will a defensive guru assistant be able to help much if the head coach seems to not give a s**** about those things.

I don't blame the assistants. Those 2 are not clueless guys. They have been in college coaching for a long time. It should have been no surprise that either of them would stay for as long as they could at Iowa. Speraw is from Iowa and a chance to come home and be part of his alma mater leading up to retirement. Dillard is on that same timetable. It's not super healthy in college hoops when you basically have zero turnover in your assistant ranks.

Even if Fran were to bring in a "defensive" assistant, I'm not sure how much better they would be. How you want to play, and the things that make up the core of your program, have to come from the head coach. From how to practice, how you teach, drill, how playing time gets allotted/rewarded, all of it is set by the head coach. Iowa doesn't value defense or competing for loose balls. Period. If they did, it would show on the floor. My guess is there will be better times ahead for this team, if they stay together and compete. But Iowa got zero bit better in the non-conference playing the slate of tomato cans. Bad habits don't get exposed by terrible teams. Don't have to play defense or get loose balls when you play terrible teams. Now Iowa goes on the road and plays teams like Iowa State and Wisconsin who are going to come at you for 40 minutes, and to date Iowa has backed off that challenge.

Reasonable rebounding would have been enough to make that a competitive game...
Not many nights when 1 stat determines the game. But rebounding was it last night. Wisconsin got 43% of its misses on the offensive end, while Iowa got only 17% of its misses on offense. Both numbers are horrific, and all about mindset and effort. Shooting % largely the same, 3-point, very close. Neither team turned it over much.

If and when this team decides that making some effort plays and doing the dirty work of defending and rebounding matters, they can win some games. But they aren't beating good teams if they don't.

I guess you didn’t watch last night?

Pmac had 7 rebounds, leading the team. He didn’t play as many minutes as a few others. In the first half in particular he was really good.

The statement that a person can’t see Pmac’s worth is a clear display of being blinded by frustration and placing blame in the wrong place.

Guards. Iowa needs them.

In 88 minutes combined, the 5 guards (Jbo, Joe, Tony, Ulis, CMac) took 17 shots, made 7 for a total of 20 points. JBo's 6 shots were all after the game was decided.

Rebracca was 1-2 with 1 rebound.

You can blame Fran all you want for coaching, rotations, defense, using his kids ... whatever. The blame lies in recruiting. This team doesn't have much talent outside of the Murray's.

That's spot on. Iowa never showed any energy or effort until about 3 minutes left when they stepped on the gas to keep the final score respectable, but this felt like a 30-point loss, no matter the final score.

Wisconsin came into the game one of the very worst rebounding teams in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes just can't, or won't, go get the damn rebound. No all-out effort from anyone. No consistent blocking out. Failing to rebound is one of the most inexcusable failures in sports because rebounding, as most people know, is 90% effort. Block out and refuse to let the other team get the ball! It's the easiest "skill" in sports, but Iowa cannot get it done. Not even close. So what's the answer? Can't raid the portal in midseason, so maybe start Ogundele next time out and use Mulvey as the first center off the bench. Why not? The worst that can happen is you get embarrassed. Ooops. Too late.

I know it's been mentioned, and if the kid wanted to do it, then it's on him, but Mulvey reclassifying looks like a major management mistake on Fran's part. Burn a year for how many MPG?
likely he would have had a big senior year and other/better suitors would have come calling.

Pmac has some moment's, but not nearly enough of them for the minutes he gets. His main attribute is he's tall. Connor might be a decent Baseball player, and I assume Rebraca must be as well.

One of the worlds great travesty's directly related to Iowa, Fran McCaffrey has 3 Sons, and Dan Gable had zero. S.O.B.!

and yet Fran doesn't know he should be playing Kris Murray more minutes....so let your talent sit on the bench.
Brilliant. But I do agree the talent is just not there outside the Murray twins

Fran is trying to play experience over talent. It's not working.

Recruiting is a major issue.
