Map makers have tools to handle disputed names. In China and for Chinese citizens abroad google will show Taiwan as part of China, but for the rest of us we see it as Taiwan. There are many such disputed places…guessing Google is just doing that. Next time I’m abroad I will see what it shows up as.

Could be. I set my VPN to Mexico and it still says Gulf of America. Maybe if I change to Spanish...
