What did you do right after graduation?

I moved to Austin and got two jobs. I worked two jobs until I paid off my loans. It took me a little over two years. It helped that I could live with my brother for a few months. I worked as much as they would let me and I scraped up enough for a cramped 615 square foot apartment.
Two full time restaurant kitchen jobs isn’t for everyone. My day job was doing prep and lunch, so 7:30 to 2:30 Monday through Friday, and my night job the hours and days changed week to week, but I probably averaged 45-50 hours a week there.
Never had a day off. Once the loans were gone, I cut back to just the night job and ended up working more hours, so more overtime and more money.
615 ain't cramped for 1 person

What IT people think they’ll do: build computers and make servers look pretty

What they really do: constantly remind boomers not to open phishing emails

Recently it has been responding to email support requests and never getting a response. Then they email me again a few days later and ask if the thing has been done or that they still have the issue so I email them back the same questions I need to move forward. Then nothing again.

People also like to start tickets at 4pm on Friday. Emergency tickets almost always the first weekend of college football.

These sort of users are also big into caplocks. I also don't care that you have a relative that knows what a computer is or that your 4 year old can clock good on a phone. And why has squirrel porn been referenced to me so damn much over the years? God I hate them all.

No, but several of my classmates in my detachment became pilots. I was a weapons systems cost analyst. There were only a handful of us in the entire USAF (less than 70 at 5 bases in the Materiel Command), and the rest were government civilians and contractors. It was a very good fit for me, as was Boston.
Are you in aerospace or defense now?

I think a good solution is to have a better outlook. Maybe try smiling more?

Did you already have a job lined up? Take time off? Work odd jobs until you landed a full time? Go straight into grad school?

While I graduated in May with my Air Force commission, my assignment at Offutt didn't begin until September. I moved in with my parents and worked a night shift at a gas station.
Commissioned in the Army with immediate active duty orders and reported to Fort Lewis the next week. Went thru all the initial stuff and was assigned to a parachute infantry battalion in the 82d ABN soon after… spring of 2001…. We were the DRF1 on sept 11th.

No, I got out after 4 years and went back to school in Iowa City. My wife got her masters in Boston so it was my turn at that point to take the next step educationally. I would have considered staying or going back to the USAF after further education in Iowa City but we wanted to lay down roots and not get moved around every three years.

Continued working my part-time job until I found full time work in my area of study, fortunately it was in Iowa City as I had no desire to leave the area for work.

Job market was a little tough when I graduated in December of 1985... ended up keeping a temp job programming for the state of Florida for a couple months until I got a job with Eastern Airlines in Miami in April. Eastern had just started hiring comp sci graduates for their programming needs whereas previously they trained from within. Every semester they brought in 20 recent college grads for training and mine was the first of several. We ultimately had 80 or so recent grads with flight benefits... we were gone 2 or 3 weekends every month. We'd fly to LA, DC, wherever for the day sometimes. Airline employees also get car and hotel discounts... I did a 3 day ski weekend for about $150 (lift tickets included, 4 people to a hotel room, $9.95/day car rental). We'd take a red eye back from skiing and head right to the beach... Those were the best 3 years of my life as far as fun goes.
