It means that you met the University requirements of course completion in a designated field to warrant a certificate of accomplishment.
This plus paid a bunch of money/went into crippling debt to do so.

Nothing more, nothing less. Its impact is determined largely by the perceptions and values of other people who are making decisions affecting your career.

What a degree from Iowa means has a lot to do with what you put into it. It got me accepted into a phd program at Northwestern University with a fellowship that paid my tuition, books and living expenses in Evanston.

Daum - this smacks of victim mentality to a degree. I got a relatively worthless degree from Iowa that in and of itself wouldn't turn any heads. Wasn't until I got into the job market that I really applied myself. Seriously hard work and a few breaks I retired at 57, four years ago. I don't agree it is worth is determined by others as much as what you can prove its worth.

I was thinking in terms of, if the people who are hiring in your field think having a college degree means something, then it can help you. I don't know if I'm expressing it well. I really just mean that the degree itself doesn't mean all that much. I'm not sure our thinking is that far off here, you're just more coherent than I am.

My degree from Iowa has suited me just fine, but I'm not in the cutthroat corporate world where a degree from an elite school means more.

Doesn't matter if you can never buy a house.... The Stanford grads will likely never afford the $1.5M+ housing in the Bay Area.

What amused me after the Rose Bowl halftime was how many of our fans were butthurt by those supposedly "west coast liberals".

Stanford makes Iowa look like San Francisco proper.

Fellowship? Now there is a word I hear every now and then and I really don't know what it means. It seems like I hear it a lot with church going people. Is it a religious word?
