58-0 64-3 type win to build their confidence.. being realistic that won’t happen but a good blow out win before the bye could do wonders for this team .. full steam ahead this weekend Hawks!
Obviously, some of this is predicated upon getting a lead but I want to see open competition in our areas of weakness.
Punter - Need I say more? It's killing us.
Safety - Snyder, Taylor and Hooker - Which two are going to step up? Play them from here on out.
OL - I want Wirfs to get first team reps, the right side of the line is clearly not working right now. Daniels got a shot his freshman year and played through the growing pains. I want to see Welsh go back to a spot he's more suited for at Guard. How about a better chance for guys like Paulsen and Reynolds? Let's see who steps up.
LB - I want Mends or Jones to get snaps for Bower. If you're not going to make it an open competition, at least get them game experience so we're not running out next year with three new LB's. We have a fantastic core of defenders back next year but LB is a huge question mark.
RB - I've been upset with the run game approach the past two weeks. Too many edge runs against athletic defenses with a stacked box. Why hasn't Toren Young gotten any carries to get positive yards in bnetween the tackles and to wear a defense down? Our edge runs have often left us in 2nd and 12 type situations this offense isn't built to overcome.
WR - Still looking for a secondary deep threat on top of Smith-Marsette. I'd like to see them try to stretch the field with Brandon Smith and utilize his athleticism. So far, he's only caught two passes and they were both of the Greg Davis passing game variety.
Good post
Couple of thoughts
Think Hooker has played well since getting the chance. Has pretty good pass instincts so would kind of suck for him to get demoted.
Agree on Wirfs. Think losing IKE was a big blow to the line continuity.
Totally agree with Young. Needs to see touches to pound them...also need to have more two back sets.
WR- we all new it would be a little bit of a struggle but the running game troubles have amplified our WR struggles. We have some decent young talent so time to step up and play.
Its funny because Ike was struggling some as well, before he got injured. Unfortunately his absense created a second problem by moving Welsh to tackle we are weaker at two spots. I'd be in full agreement to move Welsh back to guard. I think he and Daniels working together gives our run game a boost. Hopefully Wirfs can get some serious time this week, and then evaluate his play on Sunday. If he struggles open it up between he and Paulsen or whoever. It seems that moving Welsh to tackle may help pass pro a little, but has hurt our run game.Good post

I should have elaborated on my safety statement. I think Hooker has a bright future and has the total package. I do; however, have doubts that Ferentz will kick Taylor to the curb as a Senior. If Snyder is destined for FS upon his return, where does that leave Hooker? My wish (hope) was that we get the two best players on the field, I don't care where, and let them play. My preference would be Snyder and Hooker.
The kid is a physical specimen and athlete for his size like Iowa rarely gets straight out of high school. He's pretty close to the OL version of AJ Epenesa. He has the physical size and athletic ability to compete as a tackle, which frankly Iowa has been lacking since Scherff left. Other then Jackson whose on the other side. We've tried the last several years to fill that gap by bulking up tight ends like Ike, and moving over guys who were better suited at guard. the lack of success has been obvious. The staff had planned to play Wirfs anyway, where they could, so why not throw him in the pool and see if he can swim. Its the next logical step.honest question on Wirff. just what has he done to make people think he should just start?
