What kind of year will Smith have to have...

To get a legitimate shot at the NFL? Or should I say to be observed pretty seriously by an NFL team?

Powell was barely used and was given a camp invite basically as a "hey you're fast, let's see how you can do". McNutt was one of the Hawks better receivers of recent memory and he sticking around the NFL (although he's been stuck on practice squads).

Does Tevaun have to put up some McNutt like numbers or will his athleticism and ability get him a shot like Powell?

Apologies for using the word "shot" in context with Damond. I should have said "chance".

Powell was barely used? He played plenty of snaps last time I checked. You ever wondered why we didn't spring more longer runs? Downfield blocking by the WRs wasn't always stellar last year ... and Powell was a part of that. Also Powell dropped a number of balls. Lastly, Rudock opted for efficiency rather than the risk that goes along with the big play. As much as folks want to put this one on the coaches doorstep ... a big portion of it was on Rudock.

To answer your original question - it depends on how often Smith can get open. Also, he'll need to catch the ball too.

McNutt could get telegraphed somewhat from the line of scrimmage. Also, McNutt would sometimes be a little too obvious when plays weren't going his way. Lastly, McNutt wasn't always that great at getting separation. That's one of the biggest reason why McNutt hasn't really "broken out" yet on the pro level - he has great size, but he doesn't give QBs enough of a window. DBs can keep the window too tight when covering him.

I think Smith has a 'chance' no matter how the season goes. IMO he's got one of the best all-around skillsets I've seen from a WR here. He's fast, aggressive, good with YAC. I also saw that in like 50 some targets last year he had 0 drops. We just don't use him well enough

I believe if Smith gets drafted and where he gets drafted will largely depend on workouts after the season. One of the things I hate about Davis is he likes to use his most talented WR as a decoy sending him away from the middle of the field and check down areas therefore opening up those areas where Davis has instructed his QBs to throw. Smith is the type of WR that could put up McNutt type numbers but under Davis he will put up solid B1G numbers.

I will add one thing. I've heard that the WRs this year have been learning all of the WR positions. In the past they have mostly been instructed on one position and didn't move from that position. If this is true and Smith is rotates all over including the slot it could really open up the offense this year. Smith sliding into the slot at times would collapse the D into the middle and open up one on one match ups on the outside where Iowa could use some of their speed guys. Let's hope the coaching staff will let the WR's be more diverse this year.

Tavon Smith's pros are he is fast and has great hands. He can create enough separation to get open, at least in Big Ten play. He lacks major size though. If he can put on a little weight and break tackles and not have to rely so much on outrunning, he will get drafted. Especially if he continues to be fast with reliable hands.

The problem is that every wide-out in the NFL is fast and has hands. He has decent moves at the line, but none of his highlights show him getting jammed. If he can get a shot by getting drafted or UDFA signing with a team with a bad wide receiver situation like Carolina/Oakland compared to someone like Denver/Green Bay, he could play in the NFL.

His best shot is to get suspended and transfer to a school that has formations, routes and motion that gets receivers open.

He wil be the best WR in the west and maybe the b1g and will be drafted. He and Beathard are going to have a break out year.

Moving him around to different spots along with CJB being more willing to take a few chances are going to pay off big for him.

McNutt put up 'best in school history-single season' numbers and was only drafted in the 6th round. Does that say more about the player or program? McNutt isn't in an NFL camp this season and last year cut by the Panthers before the start of the season. Really only 2 years floating around the league. What Hawk WR had the best NFL career? Quinn Early?

I think Smith will have a great year but don't know if he gets drafted. If he does I think it will be a 6th 7th round type thing. Caveat. If he shows that he is a great returner that could move him up in the draft.

Think he will be one of the best receivers in the conference; biggest problem is Iowa doesn't have a good second option. He is going to get bracketed all day if other coordinators are smart.

I think Smith will get drafted and has a good chance to make the roster of the team that picked him. If the NFL does not work out, he will land in the CFL.

As long as he doesn't turn into DJK, he will get a look from plenty of organizations Pretty much every Iowa senior starter has had the opportunity to make a roster for the past 13 years. If he catches 50+ balls and runs well at pro-day or at the combine (if he's invited) he could be a 4th-6th round draft pick.

I think our 2nd options are going to be adequate. Much of that is CJB'S arm ability putting pressure on the D to cover the entire field .
