What more does Kriener have to do?

Fran, please get your head out and put Kriener in the game. In case you haven't noticed, he is the only guy who came to play tonight. Also consider benching the starters and having them run sprints until they puke tomorrow. This is the worst defensive effort I have seen in a long time. Can anyone stay in front of McIntosh?

Put Maishe in as, as all our guards are getting abused.

Glimpse into the future without Jok. We need a guard capable of keeping their guy in front of them. Bohannon, Jok, Moss, and Ellingson = awful defensively.

He could start with defense, rebounding, catching the ball. He made some nice shots but he has a ways to go.

I think it's called repeatable production. Do it again, Kriener. And again. And again.

The last two games I believe we can chalk it up to surprising the opposition. But the more he plays, the more teams won't let him go off on them.

Let's see how he adjusts to that.

He has the potential to score, which Uhl and Wagner do not. Nobody on this team can rebound, block out or play D. I bet Trimble is looking up his career highs in ever stat before Thursday's game.

Scary thing is it will be much the same. PG getting penetration is what KILLS our defense. If our guards can't stop it, we leave open shooters and give up 2nd chance points. Fran has to come up with a better defensive gameplan moving forward.

NW's guards had 4
They are young tho ....

I agree, but more experience doesn't turn non-scorers into scorers or make guys quicker. We are drastically less athletic than NW. They have multiple guys capable of making shots and creating shots. We have Jok.

We know from repeats that Uhl is not going to make bunnies or finish drives or make 3pt shots. Kreiner needs to improve his defense/rebounding, but given the rest of the bigs don't do that especially well, he deserves more PT.

Uhl's thumb injury from the last game must still be holding him out tonite? Also, is Pemsel's back still bothering him? Wagner and Cook have to at least look at the basket when they are wide open from 15 feet, otherwise defenses are just going to pack it in against the Hawks.

Name me one guy on this team that doesn't have away's to go. he has played much better than pemsl the last to games. pemsl has one move on offence. Makes you wonder about Fran's coaching.
LOL this post is specifically about kriener but that's ok. Just answering the question asked. I do believe he has and did play better than pemsl, but that wasn't the specific point I'm making.

I don't think so just because I think this is a young team without an identity if Jok isn't the main man. They'll all be improved after an off-season workout. They couldn't play worse than they did last ten minutes if they tried.

This game was WAY more about the shitty guard play than the bigs. No one played well, but guards were ATROCIOUS!!!

Ryan did a great job tonight, scoring 14 points and missing only one shot. Gary and Bobby on the radio had him as the Player of the Game for the second straight game. Fran said that he will get a lot more playing time in his post-game interview. Ryan said that he's been working on his offense and it shows. Right now he deserves to play in the regular rotation.of the top seven or so, and maybe even start. Problem is that right now the other team doesn't plan.for Ryan and when he gets more time, the other teams will figure him out. But he has my vote to play much more. Northwestern tonight just shut down Jok, Pemsl, Baer and Moss, and even Bohannon got off only a few shots. Every game is different, and some times the shots fall and sometime they don't. Right now Ryan is hot and he should play much more. We also have to realize that Northwestern is pretty darned good and even if everybody in my post not named Kriener had double (maybe even triple) the points they had, we would still have lost tonight.

Kreiner has done well all year, especially the last couple games. However, I don't think he is the answer long- term. Reminds me of Weisman playing tailback for the Hawks. Serviceable, but low ceiling compared to other options.

Go look at his stats and extrapolate them over a full game.

His numbers are approximately 20 pts and 15 Reb/game.

So tell us about his "limited upside" again.

Sorry, I believe after tonight it is 21.2 pts/40 mins and 13.5 rebounds/40 mins.

That makes him second in scoring and 1st in rebounding (by a huge margin) on the team. He also either leads the team or is top 2 in both blocks and steals/40 mins.

While more minutes and more attention from other teams will most likely lower those numbers somewhat, please, again share your extensive evaluation of his "limited upside."

What I will be a bit critical of at this point, is his defense, but have no doubt he will improve a lot there, even by year-end, assuming more PT is forthcoming.

???? 6'9" 240lbs. has a 7'3" wingspan. Pretty mobile and can handle/pass and shoot the ball out to 3pt land.

Shit, what more does a homey have to do?

If no one can box out then how did we just out rebound Purdue? We have a senior, no real quality play out of the one junior. Three of the four sophomores are very limited contributors, although Ellingson made a couple of nice plays. We start four freshmen. They are going to have bad moments. Every freshman has shown a very big upside. They just had a bad game; and Jok couldn't hit which makes it virtually impossible for the freshmen to carry the team.

Kriener has shown some things that have me intrigued on both ends.

He's confident taking shots and is comfortable around the basket. I remember the BTN guys mentioned that he was a guard in high school before he hit a growth spurt. I also liked his passing from high school highlight clips.

He's another big body, can move his feet, and plays hard. There's potential for him to be our best big defender. Just has to get caught up on the mental side. That'll come with more playing time.

I disagree with the other poster's comment that Kreiner has limited upside, you're basically saying he would average all-american numbers. While not impossible, to infer his upside is 20 and 15, the latter of which hasn't been done in over 30 years, is incredibly misleading.

I suppose Kriener could be on a fluke hot streak, but the shooting ability he has shown facing the basket appears to be legit and he can finish around the hoop. This should make the offense better. If Kriener can shoot the 3 effectively some day, then as someone else mentioned, we end up with poor man's Kaminsky.

We have Garza/Nunge coming in next year, so having a 5 that can shoot is going to get incorporated into Iowa offense.

Iowa will have lots of front court talent and size. Fran needs to shore up the back court badly. JBo, Moss and possibly Dailey are the only guards that can get the job done, imo.

Kriener was the option down low for Spirit Lake because didn't have big rebounders. We also had Billy Brown who could shoot the three so Ryan's job was to score inside. He could shoot from outside but being team player he did not step outside much. We haven't seen Dunk yet but if he has a step he can get up. I announced several of his games Junior & Senior year. Always had good attitude but working hard now and it shows

I don't know what Fran sees in practice from Uhl, Wagner, Ellingson, and Williams to earn so much PT while Kriener and Dailey sit. NW was better and more athletic at every position on the floor and off the bench. We cannot block anybody out and the guards get beat so badly there is nothing for the interior guys to do other than help or foul.

Bad combination of no viable guard options and no real size down low. A PG like McIntosh or an interior guy like Pardon would make Iowa a much better team. Outside of Kriener and Cook, it looked like everyone else tucked tail and ran mentally.
