What, no thread whining about the crowd today?

I was going to start a post saying how good this crowd was today.

I'll bite, they were starting to sound like MSU fans or dare I say ISU fans complaining about the refs. JK. The refs were horrid.

Correction, there are several posts whining about the crowd.

I have no problem with the crowd noise after Iowa hits a big shot....my problem is how they go silent for long stretches; and there is very little noise made when we are on defense.

I was there today and we DID make noise on some defensive possessions. The students were noisy when we were on defense early in the game but must have run a little low on energy after that - they had to get up for a noon game, after all. By the way, the empty seats were in the student section.

Carver was a lot of fun today!

A) as long as there was noise in the arena that's cool...probably just couldn't hear it very well on tv
B) students still not back yet???
...if not, why didn't folks move down from the upper section to fill the seats? is that not allowed?

I understand momentum usually results in the crowd be loud on defense instead of offense but I've always wondered how much of an advantage loud on defense really is. It has to hamper the ability to communicate defensively which is a key part of defense.

I'm guessing this has been discussed on this board before.

Watching on TV I thought the crowd was a bit anemic in the first half. They definitely stepped it up in the 2nd half and Iowa steamrolled.

I've said it before, but Carver just does not translate to TV well at all. It really doesn't help that all the old farts are in the first few rows and directly in camera view.

Many people don't realize this, but the scoreboard at CHA at periodicallytells the fans in attendance to be quiet, so the team can hear the fans at home cheering. But they hear...NOTHING! Please home watchers, get off your hands and make some noise! The team is depending upon you.

I was loud at home! But kept getting texts from people at Carver telling me to quiet down.

Off topic crowd story...I think today, Australian Open tennis...Djokovic (sp) won a tight match against a nobody...when he was done and being interviewed he yelled at the crowd who was booing him much of the match..."What do you think now?...Take that." Some of them booed again, loudly...but he then pointed his finger to a guy in the stands who he had heard heckling him all match...and he was annoyed...he pointed to him..."What were you saying? Yah you." The guy yelled from the stands..."I told you to quit using your drop shots, you lose everyone of those points....you suck at that shot...stop it." Djokovic was quiet...then said, "Oh, oh actually, I agree with you 100%, I really sucked at that." Then he walked off...with the win, and a wry smile.

From the standpoint of watching on tv I thought we've had some noticeably quiet crowds as of late but not today. It makes watching the game on tv so much more enjoyable when the crowd seems as into as they did today. You could see the Hawks feeding off of it.

Thought the crowd was horrible. Worst it's been all season ... And I hated the cheerleader outfits, and the band sucked ... And, I especially hate fans that then feel the need to start a post about fans not starting a post about the crowd. Nice job "super fan" ...

On a serious note: I can't ever dog on the crowd. If I am too lazy to make the trek from Des Moines, I can't diss someone else for watching the game at home.

I was in attendance and the crowd was GREAT!
I was there and this crowd was only slightly above average. The students tried to keep the energy going but during the last 10-12 minutes of the first half they provided little. Thought crowd at MSU was better and crowd was better last year on several occasions and didn't come close to NIT crowd several years ago. That one about exploded the glass out of Carver.

And you can never call it a good crowd when at least 20% of the crowd is leaving the game at the 4 minute time out. Iowa fans should be ashamed at leaving early on a team that is ranked in top 10, has a long win streak and leading the Big 10. Many people complained about the crowds several years ago and said they would get better when we started winning. That is partially true. More people are at the games, but when they leave early, I don't think you can call it GREAT at all.

I was here complaining about the MSU crowd (which was BEYOND pathetic). I didn't have a problem with yesterday's crowd. They were getting into it with the crappy refs and in general the excitement and noise levels were up. Certainly nothing amazing but not bad either. Still need way more students. Band was good.

The Iowa crowd for the Purdue game sounded louder on tv than the MSU crowd did for the Maryland game.

Well here's the problem. Most of the noise and energy at most college events comes from the students. Most of the money and financial support comes from the oldies. Iowa gets better support from the folks with the money than from the students. Solution? Let the students in for free and get their noise and energy, and charge the oldies a few more bucks per game (we can afford it) to offset the financial loss from the students.
More noise, more energy, more fun, same money.
