My freshman year my mom bought me a pair of Nike wrestling shoes for my birthday. I took so much crap from my teammates and coaches. Everyone else in the room had Asics. After that year I wore blue Asics with a silver stripe like AFHawk86's red ones. He happened to be my team captain my freshman year. I'm pretty sure every wrestler in our hometown worn their wrestling shoes around especially during the season.

I had a pair of Asics in HS (in 7 - 8 just regular Adidas basketball shoes with tape over) - Never heard of Asics before that. old and ugly shoes similar to AF86s - but a bit older. We are both USAF guys. Off we go into the wild ...

I was a freshman 105 that year.
Freshman at 105? Let's see if I recall? We had a Freshman at 98 that year... I believe was also had a Freshman at 105 varsity that year as well... did you take 2nd at state your senior year? Lost to Danny Knight (Clinton) in the finals?

Wow! Read this board for years and never posted. Also wrestled for the Hounds from 84-87. I know who the 105 from Keokuk is, the Hwt for the Hounds and the 105 for the Hounds in 84... Small world.

No, I'm not Andy Price. I was on freshman team/JV

This is a great thread, especially seeing some guys reconnect in a small world. Very cool.

I started off with a pair of used, white-and-black Asics (Tiger?) when I first tried the sport late in junior high . . . probably the same kind many others have referenced.

In HS, I made the unfortunate decision to go with Nike Greco Supremes (white swoosh and gray lines on black base). Ugh.

Switched over to black Adidas with white stripes and purple trim for coaching and a little college club competition. Don't recall the exact name, and couldn't find a pic. Thought I had them in storage somewhere, but couldn't find them when digging through some stuff a few months ago.

First pair I can remember were these bad boys as well.

Fast forward to Middle School and I had these stylish things.

Entering High School I was all back and silver Ultra Flex

Started out my senior year with these new split sole bad boys (black ones though)

but after I took my only loss of the year I quickly switched back to my Ultra Flex to finish it out in style.

And then in college I had to sport the Purple Lytes as they were new on the scene and my college colors included purple

The purple lytes sure were ugly if you ask me but I wish I still had them as they go for a pretty penny now-a-days.

Red Asics split soles. Wore them from 8th grade on(they were big in 8th grade.) Tom Brands signed them when I ambushed him while he was looking at my bracket at the '96 state tournament...I left them in my locker at Simpson College, because I am/was a huge pussy. No picture.:(

My winter sport was shooting a .22 at paper targets so being in western PA I wore something similar to these:

(Btw, did you Iowa guys have competitive rifle teams in high school?)

They do? Still have mine...in decent condition. How dare you call the PL's ugly ;) Cutting edge shoe at the time.

We weren't rich by a long shot but my Dad had me a pair of the first Gables, the red and silver Loudens, and the the PLs. I had a black strap on my glasses for a few years (good thing I could fight as I went to a lot of new schools) and didn't have much of a wardrobe but my Pops always had me some sweet wrestling shoes.
