Apparently the first 3 episodes drop Thursday night.

There's an 11-minute official preview here:

Meanwhile ... How many of these folks do you recognize? How many can you put a name to? I can name all but two. I'm guessing the guy in the upper right corner is one of Elayne's brothers. I'm blanking on the women in the top center.

If you are already a huge fan, there are a number of reviews on YouTube from people who got access to the whole season and have just been released to give spoiler-free (in theory) reactions. Here's one. I'm heartened by his comments, since he was critical of some of the same things I was critical of in the first 2 seasons. He has nothing but praise for this season, which he says is mainly based on book 4 and follows the book more closely than the previous seasons - with good results.

I’ve generally liked the show, tho it’s firmly in the good, not great category.

I do suspect I’m benefiting from not knowing the source material tho.
The first 2 seasons were jarring for many of us who have read the books. Still pretty great, but some significant "why did they change that" moments. If the WoT YouTuber is correct, this season feels much more closely aligned with book 4 - which was definitely one of the best books in the series.

Which is to say, definitely check out the new season AND, it's probably safe to start reading the books, if you haven't already done so.

To me, the first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones were the best fantasy on TV ever. WoT has been really good (imo) but only intermittently up to that standard. The previewer I watched suggests it's gotten there in season 3.

Guess I will have to give season 2 a view to see if I want to continue. Season 1 seemed like they just grabbed a couple of chapters from the series and threw them together in no particular order. I realize if they stayed true to the books that it would probably be 30 seasons of show, but the development happened really quick.

Apparently the first 3 episodes drop tonight.

I haven't read the books but the guy in the upper right corner is the villain Rand encountered at the end of season 1, isn't it? The bottom 6 plus the the guy with the curly hair are the current main characters. I confess I can't place the woman in the blue next to rand.

The lady to the right of Rand is Lanfear/Selene. Horrible picture. The actress playing her may not live up to the beauty of the book character, but she's much better looking than in this picture. She also one of those people who looks much better in action than in a static picture.

You're right about the older top right guy being Ishmael/Baelzamon, but I was referring to the younger person to his right. Now that I look closer, that's almost certainly a gal, not a guy. Oops. Still don't recognize him/her. I looked up the actors playing Galad and Gawyn and saw no resemblance - which is why I took a much closer look.

The lady in the top center might be Alanna but, if so, it's not a good picture of her. Not that the pic is bad, just that it doesn't look as much like her as I need to be sure.

After watching episode 4 I noticed the bonus videos. There's a long 2-parter that every fan will enjoy watching. It's called "Unraveling The Wheel of Time." Trust me on this. Good stuff on the cast, filming, and much more.

Warning: it might make you like the show and the characters even more.

Pretty damn good job of following the book. Each of those steps through the glass columns was like a short story in its own right in the book.
I have not read the books but I feel like I got a snapshot of each story. Honestly, the episode must have cost a fortune to make. So many different scenes and such amazing special effects. And the sound. When he’s walking through the pillars the screams and wind is crazy when watching it in surround sound.

One of the nifty things that doesn't get pointed out - trusting the viewer to notice - is the line of spears at the top of the slope to Rhuidean. If you recall, the instruction before going to Rhuidean was to leave all weapons there, and they will be waiting for you IF you return.

Very slight
The next episode should have Rand presenting himself to the gathered Aiel septs as their foretold leader. Book readers will know that it doesn't go smoothly and, in fact, gets pretty exciting.
for the next episode.

fantastic book series and it's taking a bit of effort to avoid watching. but i find it so much more satisfying to watch epic story arc shows when they are complete. another thread or two like this thogh and i might just end up jumping in ...

This season has been great. Episode 4 (last week) was particularly brilliant, but every episode has been excellent, imo.

So good, in fact, that you may want to start binging now - because you may want to start over immediately when you catch up. That good.

To be fair, the WoT book series is my favorite fantasy series ever - maybe my favorite "book" ever. So you might expect me to be biased. But it's also the case that I was unhappy with a lot of the changes they made - even though I understand that they have to make changes.

Which is to say that I might have hated it - except that they have done such a terrific job (most of the time).

Perrin is fine, but Matt is, imo, by far the best character in the book.
Matt is a great character. Not my favorite, but great. He starts off as a good-natured prankster. Doubtless voted "most likely to get us all in trouble" but not a bad bone in him.

Then, early in the series he's "infected" by the evil from Shadar Logoth and becomes increasingly unlikable for a while. Eventually, his own story arc begins to take shape and he becomes a great character in his own right.

I have not read the books, but this is the same decision I made. I watched Season 1, Episode 1 and stopped.

I didn't stop in a "I'm not watching this woke bullshit" sense like some others apparently have. I stopped and decided to just wait and binge the series during the final season if it seemed like it was worth doing so.

I do have to admit that I am annoyed by the fact that the show is focusing on the romantic relationship with Moiraine and Siuan. Yeah, they were pillow sisters, but not like soulmates. And, no Thom!

what? moiraine and siuan are in a romantic relationship in the show? i didn’t get that vibe reading the books

Yeah, that's why this part of the show is annoying me. It's mentioned, I think, just once in the book?

i have zero recollection of anything between them. i’ll still watch the show but really hope they don’t make perrin bang matt coz then i’m definitely out :)

That was another, "why?" moment for me. To lay the groundwork for them being ok with Rand, maybe?
That's exactly why. I was wondering if they were going to go through with the polygamy storyline because that would be a tough sell, particularly these days. But they are obviously laying the groundwork for it. One of the flashbacks had polygamy as a feature as well.

I'd recommend watching the first 2 seasons. At the end of season 2 they wrap up a lot of things. There's obviously a lot of story to come, but there are no cliff hangers at that point.

Since you haven't read the books, you won't be bothered by the changes. Nevertheless, they squeeze a whole lot of stuff into those 2 seasons. So if you know someone who has read the books, don't be afraid to "call a friend>" Or you could just ask here.

By the time you finish the first 2 season, it may be time to plunge in to season 3. As of today, there are only 3 episodes left in season 3.

No point in waiting until the "final season." Nobody knows if/when that will be. It seems clear that we'll get at least 2 more seasons and fans are hoping for many more.
