Wheel of Time, Season 3

I'd recommend watching the first 2 seasons. At the end of season 2 they wrap up a lot of things. There's obviously a lot of story to come, but there are no cliff hangers at that point.

Since you haven't read the books, you won't be bothered by the changes. Nevertheless, they squeeze a whole lot of stuff into those 2 seasons. So if you know someone who has read the books, don't be afraid to "call a friend>" Or you could just ask here.

By the time you finish the first 2 season, it may be time to plunge in to season 3. As of today, there are only 3 episodes left in season 3.

No point in waiting until the "final season." Nobody knows if/when that will be. It seems clear that we'll get at least 2 more seasons and fans are hoping for many more.
I would much prefer to watch the entire series in one go. It is perfectly fine with me if that happens 5 years from now.

I definitely do not lack shows that I've been meaning to watch. What I lack is the time to watch them all.

I absolutely get what you're saying. I often feel the same way. But here's the thing . . . . Are the shows you are watching better than the shows that you are refusing to watch?

I have a buddy who I'm sure would love For All Mankind and Ted Lasso and maybe a few other shows on AppleTV+. He won't sign up for a month to check them out. He won't even sign up for a free trial to check them out. His reason? He has too much other stuff to watch.

I have another friend who won't consider signing up for free or limited duration because remembering to cancel is just too stressful.

These are not people who are saying "I really don't like that genre" or "I can't afford to sign up." They are people letting "but then I'd miss Lucy reruns" or "adding a note to my calendar to cancel is too hard" get in the way of superior viewing experiences.

Obviously we are all in charge of what we want to watch and when. And I can see waiting for a bunch of shows to drop before getting started on a series. I'm doing that now with The Pitt on MAX. And did it for a while with Only Murders in the Building on HULU. But 2 seasons of WoT have fully dropped. You could watch those.

I have watched all three seasons in the last 4 weeks, season finale tonight, I guess. Then the long wait for the next season to come out. Much happier with season 2 and 3 than I was with season 1. Keep thinking of all of the things that have to happen and wonder how many seasons that they have planned.

My Jr son has seen some of it as he walks by, and watched most of episode 7 with me last night, and was asking if he should read the series. I suggested that he should but wait until school gets out.

This season has been great. Episode 4 (last week) was particularly brilliant, but every episode has been excellent, imo.

So good, in fact, that you may want to start binging now - because you may want to start over immediately when you catch up. That good.

To be fair, the WoT book series is my favorite fantasy series ever - maybe my favorite "book" ever. So you might expect me to be biased. But it's also the case that I was unhappy with a lot of the changes they made - even though I understand that they have to make changes.

Which is to say that I might have hated it - except that they have done such a terrific job (most of the time).
That's good to hear. I enjoyed the books and the first few episodes were so bad I didn't go back. Apparently I should.

The Twisted Red Stone Door Frame

Book lovers will be pleased to see this make 2 appearances in this episode.

In the books there are 2 of these. One in the collection of artifacts in the deep basements of the White Tower in Tar Valon, the other in Rhuidean. In the TV series, the second is in Tanchico (where Elayne, Nynaeve, Matt and Min are searching for the Black Aja and the Adam designed for men.

In the books Rand, Moraine and Matt go through the first one. Matt also goes through the second one. Moraine may also, but my memory is hazy.

In the TV show, we see Elida go through the first one and Matt goes through the second - although the representation seems more like his trip through the first in the books. No matter. It's nice to see them appear.

Just watched the finale. Pretty entertaining.
I just watched it again. This is arguably the best single episode of high fantasy I've ever seen. Truly epic.

If this doesn't get renewed, they ended on an amazingly high note.

I don't see how they could refuse to renew it. I've heard it is now rated the #1 fantasy show in the world. But I've been disappointed before by callus corporate decisions.

I liked it, but I can think of at least 10 episodes of game of thrones which were better. But we can all agree it was awesome on an absolute scale.

GoT was great (at least for 5 seasons or so) and has most of my top-rated individual episodes in the genre. So I didn't praise this one lightly.

Watching it a 2nd time clinched it for me. Not perfect. But close enough.

There are parts of some GoT episodes that truly soar. The 10-15 min segment culminating with Daenys getting her army for example. I didn't find the whole sequence, but this should refresh your memory, if needed.

Moraine does, in the books. Doesn’t come back until A Memory of Light.

WoT is one of my favorites as well. My expectations for the show were insanely high. I’m glad to hear they are getting better with the story as S1 left me a bit sour.

There are certain quotes I desperately want to hear on screen.

“RHAVIIIIIIIIHHHHNNNNN!” The end of Lords of Chaos was insane.

“Kneel or you will be knelt”. Dumais Well’s. Top 5 chapters in the series.

“The Golden Crane flies to Tarmon Gai’don”. Man I hated reading Nynaeve’s chapters so many times, but had many good ones too.

That song of Manetheran in S1 was really cool.

I thought they already had renewed it but maybe they were talking about something else. That would be a shame if they ended it because the show has definitely hit its stride this season. I think they would need at least 2 more seasons to get through the whole series (poorly). Ideally I think 4 more seasons would be the minimum to get it done and do it well.

I would assume next season they start dealing with the Ash'a'mann? Maybe end the season with Dumas Wells. They still need to get Calandor from Tear as well since the series skipped that whole part. Another season dealing with the split with you-know-where and they still have the Sean'chan threat out there and Mat's storyline with them. I don't know, maybe 4 more seasons is the minimum you could do it in. And the last 3 books of the series is a season by itself.

So, after watching it I see they changed the fate of Siuan Sianche. They also brought the encounter with the door that gave Mat the medallion in as well, but Moraine wasn't there. So I'm wondering if Siuan's death replaces Moraine's death that was supposed to happen. And I would say I like that better than what the books did as Moraine's death was always unsatisfying. And that was ok too as many times that's the way death is, but still.

On the other hand, wasn't the reason the White Tower never had a death penalty was because Aes Sedai could only kill dark friends? Although Elaida did say she had been declared a dark friend so maybe that's how they were able to do it. I guess all you have to do is truly believe something to get around the 3 oaths, because at least at this point I don't think Elaida is a dark friend yet. At least I hope not, one of my favorite parts about the White Tower civil war storyline was for most of it, it wasn't caused by dark friends taking over but by pushing the buttons of others to make it happen and the other Aes Sedai's own desire for power.

I'm assuming they won't tell the story of Matt and Tuon. Don't expect to see Birgitte, either. Or the traveling circus story-line.

Obviously anything involving Loial is gone. Unless they bring him back.

Here's my theory on how they bring Loial back....

We left him falling - maybe forever - in the Ways. In the books, people wonder what would happen if they fell off the pathways through the Ways. So, in theory, he would eventually starve to death. BUT, the Ways distort space-time - most obviously by letting people travel great distances in short times. So all we have to do is hypothesize that time slows for Loial, then Egwene or a Wise One locates his dreams and pulls him into Tel'aran'rhiod, and then out again to safety. Easy peasy.

I actually like what they did with Loial because in the books after he heads back to the steading he really is out of the story at that point. Someone needed to die to raise the stakes of the series and given his limited impact after he leaves it was a logical choice. Especially since they written a way to not have to kill off Moraine. Considering she's the biggest name in the series you'd think they'd keep her around until the very end.

Is Moraine dead?

They changed what happened in the books, so who knows?

Lanfear thought Moraine was dying, but that doesn't mean it's true. There are Wise Ones and Egwene not too far away, so it's plausible Lan can get her to them in time.

What about Lanfear? From the blood spurts it looked like Moraine cut Lanfear's jugular. But as we saw earlier, she can heal herself (which Aes Sedai can't do). So I'm assuming they didn't kill off Lanfear.

At the moment, I'm expecting Moraine and Lanfear - and maybe even Loial - back for season 4.

The post credits scene for the series will be Loial popping up 3000 years later in another Age of Legends as the camera pans to another prophecy that basically triggers another turning of the wheel.

tuon and birgitte are awesome characters. and the dynamic between matt and tuon on screen could get very popular...too bad if they had to skip all that

With Siuan (and Leanne?) out of the way, will they cut the story arc of the Rebel Aes Sedai? How about the Logain story arc?

I assume we'll see the Seanchan again - maybe next season. But if I'm correct in thinking Tuon is out of the picture, that will be quite different.

The main reason I think Tuon got the axe is because they are clearly developing a romance between Mat and Min. I could be wrong

I don't think Moraine is dead. Rosamund Pike is the only relatively expensive actor on the series so unless they plan on replacing her with someone with as much gravitas then she'll be around for a while. You still have to introduce Cadsuane, who I thought they were using Shohreh Aghdashloo for and who I would have picked for the role. But they cast her as Elaida instead, another important role and certainly not a miscast either. But you still need someone who can bring in the old guard Aes Sedai to support the dragon. Also, you need a red Aes Sedai who shows that the entire sect isn't just some man hating torture squad of dark friends running around killing any guy they don't like.

We might see them now. With Siaune and Loial not on the show that opens up cast spots they can use for them.

Who will be the Dragon Re-Reborn?

Kidding aside, I wonder why we haven't seen novels starting after the end of the series. Sanderson would be the obvious author to at least kick off the new series. But maybe he doesn't want to. Or maybe Jordan's estate/wife won't authorize it.

Did we get that in the books? I've forgotten. I had to look it up to make sure Cadsuane wasn't a Red (she was Green).

Cadsuane was green? I thought she was a red, she didn't have any warders. But it had been many, many years since I read the books. I do remember the books taking note that every red was just an evil man hating witch who isn't happy unless she's stilled another man. I disliked this characterization, although that's the way it ended up being. I think Jordan needed to add some scenes of them being effective and good to counterbalance the constant evilness. JR Rowling managed to make it so House Slitherin wasn't just where all the evil wizards went, the White Tower needed that as well. It's a fine line, but with the Reds around, who needs a Black Ajah? They are basically the same thing.

the characters and worlds in both wot and harry potter series are incredible but there is massive overlap with tolkien's characters and world. was tolkien the og for this genre or did he have a predecessor also?

Fantasy has been around forever. Certainly since the ancient Greeks. One could make the argument that a lot of their religion was fantasy writing but let's not open up that bag of worms here. Much of our modern fantasy is based off of creatures the ancient Greeks made up. There is a lot of ancient Celtic stuff in it too. King Arthur certainly fits in that category. Basically, all ancient religions provide the basis for modern fantasy. Tolkien is the first person to really kind of bring a lot of that together for one created world with a focused story, though. Most modern fantasy can be traced back to what Tolkien did in one form or another.

Egwene's second Keeper was a Red. Some others may have been good, but I can't remember. There was the one that Mat rescued. Abrasive, but good. And the one that worked with Androl.

But it had been many, many years since I read the books.
Two things are likely to happen if/when Amazon cancels the show too soon.

1. I will begin rereading the series.

2. I may cancel Prime and other Amazon stuff.

If only the Amazon stuff weren't so damn convenient and so pervasive in my entertainment space. But not irreplaceable.
