I take it you are young. First off, we played Michigan MSU and ohio st more often, had tougher non conference games and Minnesota and Illinois were much better than what you are saying. And Hayden put beatdowns in teams we were better than. He played exciting football and had a personality that drew everyone in. Kirk plays boring football, his game mgmt skills have always been awkward and has a very low key personalityPeople seem to gloss over how much the landscape has changed since Hayden first came to Iowa. Yes. you have to give him credit for throwing a monkey wrench into the dominance that was the Big two, and little eight at the time. At the same time, many of our conference opponents were simply no where near as good as they are now. Back in the 80's Nwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, all sucked, not to mention a horrible ISU program once Bruce left. Purdue, and MSU were up and down, and other then a few years, Illinois was well, Illinois. The MAC level teams are much more competitive today then they were back then as well. There's just WAY more talent spread out through the college landscape now at all levels, which has led to upstarts like Boise State, and unthinkable upsets like App State, and NDSU, who has won their last five road games against power five schools.......

I really don't have an argument with anything you said. I just get a little tired of some of the nostalgia that gets brought up. There's another school of thought that people don't seem to consider. It had to be pretty easy to get Nebraska, or UCLA as an example to schedule lowly Iowa in Fry's early years. Given the power five teams wanting so many home games now, and the fact the a trip to Kinnick doesn't exactly sound like a walk in the park, I'm not sure some of these schools want Iowa on a home and home schedule. Missouri is another power five school who's had some recent success, and when Pinkel got there he dropped Iowa like a hot potato. It takes two to tango. Yes, I realize that some high level teams schedule one killer non con game, for the national exposure. Just think that Iowa may be somewhere in limbo, where there a tough matchup, and don't really provide that marquee name for schools to make it worth the gamble. You bet times have changed. How many times has KF played two top ten teams (and beaten them both) and a good ISU team in one nonconference season? Never. Hayden did it in his third season in Iowa City and went on to win the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl berth.
Although Hayden eventually got the non-con schedules to be more realistic, he never backed down from the UCLAs (they had great teams in those days) and the Oklahomas.
And although the program was down when KF took over, Fry had built the foundation and had established Iowa on the national scene after taking over a program that had about 20 years of nothing but losing seasons. Iowa was the Kansas of those days. Before Hayden arrived, Kinnick would go crazy when Iowa did the unthinkable and managed a first down. Turning that program around and maintaining it for most of 20 years is why Fry will always be the greatest force in Iowa football history . . . at least until somebody takes the Hawkeyes to a national title. And even then, that would have been built on the foundation Hayden Fry built.
Obviously, both Hayden and KF deserve a lot of credit and, obviously, it's impossible to compare eras. And numbers don't mean much, except in very general terms. So let's give both men their due and leave it at that.
Sorry, but as usual, you have no idea what your talking about. I've seen Iowa football before Hayden became the coach, so I remember the dark days before he arrived. I loved Fry and still do. The problem is that many people seem to forget as the years go by that he had his failures, poor decisions, and horrible losses. Its funny when reporters ask KF about Fry, because he loved the man, but he was there on the staff. He knows that a lot of what people seem to remember are the exotics, and the big wins. They forget, that at the core Iowa football was very similar to what we see today. They forget the head scratching defeats, the poor bowl record, and anything else that doesn't fit their narrative. Yes Hayden was an charismatic, and innovative. Thats why he's in the hall of fame. As much as you dislike the current head coach, he'll most likely be there as well, as hard as that will be for you to stomach. Top five in conference wins in the history of a storied BIG conference. I think so.......I take it you are young.
