When you perform poorly, you should sit, right?

I know the options to Patrick aren’t great on this squad, but still…

Joe T sat; Bowen sits; Sandfort sat;

Why doesn’t Patrick? His offense is as bizarre as it is awful and his defense couldn’t stop a cold.

Sure, the situation isn’t nearly as terrible as playing a hobbled 6’5 guard at the 4 who couldn’t hit water from a boat in front of a future top 5 lottery pick, but it still begs the question:

Why doesn’t Patrick sit?

There is just absolutely no way the father isn't taking over for the coach in this situation. If it was our kid and we were in the stands, we'd be on pins and needles hoping/praying that he'd play well and want every last chance for him to perform, especially given the mental side. The coach should overrule the father and see that he's a detriment to the team.

Fran can't do that.

Well, he only played 18 min. Where should those minutes go?

Chemistry is a fragile thing and we may have already spoiled the batch we had cooking. Not playing Pmac means more Sandy minutes at 3 where he belongs. Allows us to go 3 guard at times with Dix, Bowen, Perk, Ulis. We were so much better when we had Dix, Sandfort, Kris and Perk or a capable shooting Connor on the floor. We’re able to spread teams out, let Perk or Bowen attack the middle.

To me it’s the defensive side, Pmac always gets lost. Now whole team is in slump, and Fran won’t change anyway so whatever.

Sometimes you just have to play your way through bad times. Any golfer understands this, as does anyone who has played baseball. Sometimes “slumps” are inexplicable. Sometimes there are fundamental and basic explanations. My observation is Iowa’s shooting is horrible right now....to a man. And this is working through the team’s entire game. It’s really ugly, right now.

You're going to put Bowen in against who Patrick matches up with? You're going to expect Josh O run the court in that position?

Later in the game all five on the floor should have sat. I think Fran likes playing ineffective line ups.

The #1 priority is to win the game. If someone is in a slump, don't keep feeding him. Let him work out of the slump in practice and an occasional shot during a game when priority options close.

Well, when you put it that way.

When they all shoot this poorly, there aren't many options other than to play the starters more minutes and hope they don't get into foul trouble. But, as soon as Kris and/or Filip get 2 in the first half, they're coming out - that seems to be one hard and fast rule for Fran.

This is a good post.
The team most certainly went in the tank after PMac came back.
That should be a big red flag.

I don't hate Patrick and hope that at some point he plays better but its very hard to miss.

He jogs around on offense looking lost and we he does get the ball he does a running jumping something of a shot or pass attempt.

He's slow and lost on defense.

Team played better when Patrick was out.

That said, the whole team is playing in the shitter right now.

Brother...you can take the “2 foul in the first half and sit” to the bank with Fran. This is what he does....damn near all the time.
I can remember when Fran was hired, a local paper ran an article written by a Sienna beat writer regarding Fran. He promised Iowa fans 2 things with Fran and Hawkeye basketball....He told Iowa fan that Iowa’s basketball teams will score points (lots of them!) and that when a player gets his second fouls in the first half, he will sit on the bench for the rest of the half.
It is no mystery.."it is just something that Fran does”.......

It's not horrible at home. It's horrible on the road and this isn't new. It's been horrible on the road for pretty much the entire year with the exception of Rutgers way back in early January. Their road 3 point percentage for the year is close to worst in the country.

Fans rightly want officials held accountable for their performance in the way of impacting future assignments. It should be the same with players and playing time, but that definitely doesn't seem to be the case.

Don't complain about seeing poor performing officials when we keep playing players who look absolutely lost on defense and can't find the bottom of the nets.

In the words of Patrick, "that's so bad."

He should be playing 8 minutes/game.

Let Josh and Mulvey play as the only thing Patrick brings is length.

I've always said Patricks floor should be Jr season Nicholas Bauer. His ceiling should be Aaron White. I wish he would watch endless tape of how Bauer played. Effort and mental toughness appears to be the biggest difference. And I don't think he has the right coach for what he needs to become his best.

If only we had a couple more schollys to use...

....oh wait.
Come on. Who would ever use this to their advantage. Could you imagine a coach connected with the state of iowa, who had a son on his team who wasn’t even the best player on his iowa high school team, that became the best player in his college’s history, one of the best players in college basketball the past decade, and then his dad took his scholarship away his senior year to create room for another Iowa kid who got an extra year of eligibility??!?!? That makes too much sense to ever happen at the university of iowa!

I know Bowen hasn't exactly lit things up (except for Duke - 12 points), but when you get limited minutes and fear getting yanked for a mistake, it's not great for confidence.

I'd rather take a few lumps with him (10-12 minutes). He can get to the basket better than any other guard we have.

Just what we needed on this board....Another thread bashing the McCafferys'. Yippee!

I suspect none of on here have the power to make any changes in the way the basketball program is being run so why don't you all bombard Barta with your complaints?

Ah yes, good ole Nicholas Bauer 😂

Is that Eddie’s brother or was it Michael Bauer? Wasn’t he that walk on from Bettendorf or something? One of the greats for sure.

Your posts kill me, Nicholas Bauer.

That and we currently have two unused scholarships.

BTW, who are you talking about? McDermott?

I'd like to see more of Dix too, along with some Bowen since he is the future at pg. Dix seems to be a fan favorite based on the glimpses he's shown earlier but I was surprised to read in Leistikow's last article that he hasn't scored a point in the last 5 games. Granted, he's only averaged 6 minutes a game in those 5 and that's a big part of it but I'm not going to hold my breath that he's a savior right now. Would be nice if we can get a little scoring from him down the stretch.

It's just not a deep roster right now in any way, Hawks need Kris and Fil to be their normal selves and Tony and Sandfort to be a lot more consistent down the stretch and it could still be a nice finish to the season. If Patrick can contribute that would be icing on the cake but definitely not holding my breath there. Hopefully Fran plays him accordingly but he said in that article that they need veterans like him so he's probably going to get his minutes regardless of performance. The Iowa way...

Well, in his last 7 games, he's shot 12-34 from the floor, including 3-15 from 3. He has 12 total rebounds while playing a frontcourt position, under 2 a game. 5 Assists to 5 Turnovers. It's been pretty awful.
Okay. Everyone clamoring for Sandfort to get Pats minutes, but in his last 5 games, Sandfort is 13/38 from the floor (34%) and 6 for 22 from 3 (not good).

At best, Payton's defense is as bad as Patrick's. At worse, his defense is much worse than Patrick's. In the NW game, they constantly switched Buie onto Sandfort and then just wiped the floor with him.

Fact of the matter is, this team desperately needs another two-way forward and neither Patrick or Payton are doing much on either end of the court. Dix might be a serviceable 3 some day, but I don't think he wins us either of last two games.

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Jack Bauer.

To anyone but Patrick. He doesn’t defend, rebound, or hustle, head in the clouds with no awareness out there. His once promising offensive game has gotten even worse with three point air balls. Dude needs to call it a season. Might want to consider playing for another school and coach. Clearly, playing for his out of control father is part of the problem.
