Where are all the Debbie Downers today ??

A loss last night I think the best Iowa would have gotten was a play in game. Now they are in ....still in in a disappointing fashion but in nonetheless.

On a different note...Illinois is bad. Real bad. So bad that I like it!

Granted there are extreme Debbie Downers. But the rational ones don't understand how the team that played Wisconsin the 2nd time and the one that played last night are the same team..

Some of it is natural variance, but Iowa is a bit of an extreme. The team has to play with a lot of energy to be effective. To just be mediocre/average on defense, Iowa has to play with a lot of effort. When they don't, things get ugly.

We beat a 12 win team, let’s hold off on doing cartwheels until after tonight’s game.
I've been waiting for the first negative comment after winning a game ....here it is! Lose and some of us complain ....win and we still find reasons to make negative remarks! The only way these types are happy is if you win 30 games .....oh no wait ....if we were 30-1 we would still complain we lost one!!

Great game by the Hawkeyes to solidify their NCAA bid.

Great game by Nick Baer.........the IllSwini ran into a
BAER TRAP, last nite !

Go Hawks
You have to be excited that we are 1-4 in our last 5 games. And the win came against an improving team but one still in the bottom 1/4 of the Conference.

Hence the reason for the questioning. Shouldn't they have that mentality since they are getting a free education as a trade off? Clearly they get worn down at the same time of the year. That I don't get. I'm glad they showed up last night but how did they look like a 5th grade team against Wisconsin 2 weeks earlier. Fran needs to address that. Even if it has nothing to do with him he needs to fix that.

I'm not arguing with you. Just pointing out that every single team goes through the lulls. Fixing the issue isn't just a matter of addressing it. It all goes together. What culture is developed in practice and the off-season? That's what teams fall back on when they get in a game where shots aren't going in, calls are going against them and they are generally struggling. With Fran's teams, honestly, I have no idea what the culture or identity is. Good or bad, with Ferentz you know what the culture of the Iowa football team is. They want to be smart, tough and physical and tailor everything in the program to that, from how they recruit to how they train. Iowa still ends up losing more games than fans want most years, but very rarely if ever do we fans question the effort or the buy-in from the team. Exception of 2016 at Penn State. But it happens so infrequently that it's an exception.

Bluder is another coach that is good at building culture. Yes, recruiting is not at the level to let Iowa compete with the very best in the country, but Bluder's teams will always share the basketball and are skilled offensively. Again, that culture guides everything they do, from players they recruit to how they practice to how they come together as a team. A strong culture allows a team to bounce back from losing a shot at a Big 10 title (blowing a 16-point lead at Indiana) to then a couple weeks later to win the Big 10 tournament. The Iowa team could get upset and not make it to the Sweet 16, they have enough holes that it could happen in the second game. But the women on that team will give great effort and not panic if they fall behind.

Heller is another great example of building culture, but you get the point. The culture of a program goes beyond game plans and X and O's to those intangible things that bring a team together in adversity. Maybe Iowa has one under Fran. I just haven't seen what it is. I don't care what anyone says, having your coach get suspended for 2 games after playing a stinker of a game doesn't say anything good about the culture being created.

Nice to see them get back in the win column and solidify their standing for NCAA. Just looked much more like the prior Hawks as opposed to last 4 games. Tonite could be interesting if they play the same way.

Some people equate being a downer with 40 years of realistic expectations. We know who Iowa is and how HARD and SMART they have to play to have success. I'm never disappointed by losses if the play hard and smart bases are covered. When you get outrebounded by 20 ( Wiscy ) you didn't play very hard. Reality is balls don't always go in but work ethic should never take a night off...

Downers only care when their team loses. I just don't get that mentality.

Not lose, but the manner in which they lose.
And the spazzed excuse for a coach.
I don't know how that's so tough to grasp.

And if we're such "Downers", how can we be so optimistic about Iowa Basketball potential with the right coach?
If we're such Downers, shouldn't we be happy with Fran since that's the best Iowa can do?

Dont worry, Darian Devries will fix it.

Those asking why this team looks different from game to game don’t seem to understand teams are going to have good and bad shooting games. 3 of Iowa’s previous 4 games they shot badly and the 4th Nebraska couldn’t miss at the end. Hard to win or look good when your shots aren’t dropping!

Sounds like someone who has never every played sports before, especially the game of basketball

I'm so happy, the Hawks beat a pathetic Illinois team (i.e. won a game they should have), didn't look totally inept, or blow a big lead in the second half, so much to be pleased about, really. Oh yea, Fran didn't embarrass the University either. A truly defining moment in Iowa Hawkeye Basketball History. Such high standards by which to judge a coach, a team and a program.

Fran looked disinterested in doing interviews last night. At half he was almost facing away from the camera.

Good game last night, but Illinois is really bad. Hopefully we play with that same type of intensity. Also go at Michs bigs. Last time we got them in foul trouble I believe and it helped!

You actually believe your standards have something to do with the direction of the program, don’t you?

I’ll just be over here enjoying myself.

I realize that 4 game stretch was extremely disappointing, but I'll guarantee 95% of those still bitching would have given their right nut at the beginning of the year to be 22-10 at this point.

I'm happy you're content with those kinds of standards. Do you just "settle" for everything in you life.

I'd give right nut if Barta and Fran, and for that matter Ferentz were fired.

He was pissed during the halftime interview as IL player's drive to basket just prior to interview was a missed call. The guy took 3 clear steps with no call.

And if we lose? You gonna call for everyone's head again?

Lets face it. Iowa wins? Silence. No compliments. Nothing.

Iowa loses? Fire Fran! Fire Barta! Cook sucks! Our guards suck!

Maybe you guys should forget about Iowa and start rooting for Duke. Your lives would be much happier.

Lol that last night changed our NCAA tourney placement at all.

Depends on what you mean. If we lose that game 83-62, the Iowa fan base is sweating bullets on Sunday. By avoiding another huge turd, I think I agree with the consensus that Iowa is solidly on the #8-#9 line, although #10 isn't out of the question (and actually preferable if you ask me). They're at least in a position where a loss isn't going to knock them down any more. Of course, they have a chance to win themselves up to a #7 seed and maybe even as high as a #6 if they actually win the whole thing.

The problem is that apparently there are no standards for judging Iowa coaches. The more mediocre you are, the more you are paid, the longer your contract gets and the larger you buy-out becomes. I'm happy you are willing to accept mediocrity as the "Gold Standard" by which to judge things, you seem pretty easy to please.

Oh, and please enlighten me as to direction of the program? Exactly when is Franny going to really kick it in and take the program to the next level, year 16?

Fran looked disinterested in doing interviews last night. At half he was almost facing away from the camera.

That's because the entire broadcast crew was drooling all over the possibility of Illinois pulling off the upset,... and they didn't give up on it until half way through the second half....

He was irritated because 4.8 seconds earlier an Illinois player traveled and it wasn't called so the basket the player made counted. He was irritated at the refereeing again.
