How come there seems to be so few Iowans wrestling at events like NHSCA or Flonationals? There is not a single Iowan in the pre-seeds of Flonationals. There are state placers and champs from all over the country at this tournament. Is there some reason Iowa guys aren't out there?

USA folkstyle nationals at UNI this weekend. Also I believe a lot of the clubs immediately go into freco after the state tournament.

Also AAU Middle School and 9th/10th grade national duals are going on in Des Moines this weekend. I wish AAU, USA, Flo, NHSCA, Intermat, ect...would get together every year and work on a national events calendar. There are plenty of dates between high school state and fargo for everyone to have piece of the pie. It would be beneficial for everyone. Last year Disney Duals and National Duals(Free/Greco) was the same weekend. I hope that's not the case this year.

I think many of these are intentionally done close to another to give alternate choices(sort of like the Southern Scuffle popping up around Midlands).

Did not know about the USA folkstyle nationals. That makes sense since it is much closer. If my memory serves me right, the level of competition there usually isn't great. I'd think some guys would want to challenge themselves at a tougher tournament like Flo. But, maybe I'm wrong about the level of these events.

The depth isn't great, but the finals and semis can be very good depending on the bracket. I believe Jack Jessen, Max Lyon, and Myles Wilson have all registered for 182. It will be nice to see how Wilson fares against a couple of other ranked guys.

132 looks tough and 285 has #4 Anthony Cassioppi #7 Aaron Costello #13 Gavin Nye as well as double fargo AA Spencer Trenary

Thanks for the information. Sounds like the competition at the USA event is better than I remember.

I would think that every Iowa state champ would want to be there to compete against the other champs in different classes. It would be awesome if it would happen and as far as people training for freestyle/Greco that is a pure BS excuse. JMO

Why is that bs? Most clubs have been training freco for 3-4 weeks. There have already been numerous tournaments.

Another factor is distance. You can drive to CF and an athlete and family can spend maybe $500 for the weekend or fly to one of the other tourneys and spend 4-5 times that much or more.

Caleb Rathjen an eighth grade from Ankenyr took Reno to overtime, he loss but pretty impressive showing. He is one to watch.

USA is very tough. Should be a great match at 106 with Jeremiah Reno and Cullen schriever.

Caleb is a stud. Great kid and comes from a great family. His Dad was a stud in his own right. Won State but chose football at Central for college. I know the family well and couldn't speak more highly of them.

Cons. Semi - Caleb Rathjen (Ankeny Wrestling Club) won by injury default over Cullan Schriever (Sebolt Wrestling Academy) (Inj. 1:58)

3rd Place Match - Caleb Rathjen (Ankeny Wrestling Club) won by decision over Drew Roberts (Orange Crush Wrestling Club) (Dec 10-3)
