Where Does Max Duggan Stand?

Would love to have him, if he wants to be a hawk. Me thinks he really wants to go somewhere else. My question is if they land Petras and thier first pick (duggan) says no, do they go after a "fall back" QB in 19 or would having Stanley, PM, Petras get us into 2020?

If Stanley is a Sr and they have Mansell and/or Petra you go after a JuCo IMO

Good call. Didn't put 2 and 2 together there. Nevertheless if boyle stays Imo they should use the scholly somewhere else. The likelihood of them all going down is worth the risk. Plus there is something to be said for going after a 2020 and saying there was a hole open.

In my eyes, Tyler never was and never will be irrelevant as long as he chooses to be a Hawkeye. We are beyond fortunate to have such a gifted young man next in line. In the blink of an eye (God forbid) any starter (even a budding superstar) can go down. I believe that we would be in good and capable hands with Tyler - who just might be another superstar in waiting. I think we all remember having three Division I QB starters here at the same time not so long ago. Add young Mr. Mansell to the mix and maybe we have them again. Hope upon hope that they all stay.

Your reading comprehension and/or math skills are severely deficient.

I wish the young man nothing but the best in his decision.

Hopefully our coaches and the stability in the program convinced him and if not I wish him all the best as a fellow western Iowan.

The staff should just stay in the habit of taking a QB every class. Duggan has played alot but his numbers don't seem that great. What are some of the reason folks are so high on him?

He was injured a good portion of this year. The reason his offers are great is due to the physical ability and his makeup. High school stats mean next to nothing for HS quarterbacks (or other positions for that matter). I believe he's also camped at quite a few schools so the schools offering him are well aware of what he brings to the table.

Are you really saying we shouldn't go after the highest-rated in-state QB in really ever because our third or fourth-string QB will still be on the roster? Talents like Duggan you always, always take. His first year on campus Stanley will be a senior. Perfect situation to come into.

No inside knowledge here. Just word of mouth. I live in CB. Know a couple of the LC coaches and have friends whose kids also play for LC. Sounds like he has a great arm. A real natural. Have heard several people say he throws the best ball they have ever seen. Good overall athlete. Good speed. He played as true freshman and split time with another kid. He was the "throwing QB" and other kid was more of a runner. Went to see him play this year but he got hurt in 1st qtr so didn't get to see much. Sounds like he has impressed coaches at every camp he has been to. Numbers took a hit this year from missing multiple games with broken thumb. From what I heard I think a lot of people around here expected his numbers to be lower this year compared with last year as LC apparently lost all their top receivers and several guys off the line.

I don't see him signing with Iowa due to the style of offense and him getting interest from much higher programs. People are high on him due to camp exposure. I had a coach tell me he could tell the difference when Max was throwing the ball even when he had his back turned to him.

Maybe we should be more flexible with our offense to match the players we have....just saying.

He just got an offer from Ohio State.

And? Iowa beat them 55-24. Yawn.

LoL. I wish Iowa played like that every week but we know it's not that easy. At least Iowa coaches can use that result as food for thought when talking to Max about helping Iowa trend upward, be more consistent week in and week out so they take the step to the next level by winning the games they shouldn't drop, especially at home - Purdue, NDSU, Etc.

It's hard to recruit high level offensive players when your offense tends to be outside the top 100.

Is the offense not that great because of the system, or because of the players? Kind of chicken and egg thing. If my goal is to play in the NFL, going to Urban's offense is not where I'm going to do that.

Duggan would be a major get for the Hawks. If he has some running ability, Iowa would use more of the things that played to those abilities, similar to what they did with Banks. In 2002, Banks rushed for 435 yards and 5 TD's.

No, it's not a chicken/egg thing. The structure of the offense is clearly limiting its output. As such...most top offensive players don't want to be part of it.

Could be. My opinion (just opinion) is it is likely both. Iowa's lack of game-breakers at WR (in general) contributes to the problems with the offense. Ferentz has made the decision that at Iowa he can recruit and develop talent on the front 7 and the o-line that can compete on a given day with anyone. It's worked to the extent that his record against the likes of Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin is better than anyone not named Ohio State. But it also means Iowa has less advantage over equal/lesser teams due to the style of play.

Smith-Marsette had a very nice freshman season, Iowa needs another 3 or 4 wideouts with similar ability to get to the place where the offense takes a step forward.

The offensive #s are a little misleading since our MO is to grind/run and play ball control. Even with that style of play, we need to improve drastically.

Name a team which runs an offense you would prefer to see. Asking for a friend.

I would prefer more of a Sean payton/oddball west coast O. Where we could almost recruit moneyball ways for mismatches yet have a high end deep threat. The GD offense did almost nothing vertically and the BF offense seems to have more verticals but time will tell if it will be primarily TE on longer patterns or a solid X receiver. There could be something to Brian wanting longer completions to WR down the feild but the players are not good enough. Ala ISM against minny. Long story short I think using a ground game with short routes to open up deep balls would be our ideal fit. The deep passing game is devastating in CFB. Even this year Brian may have taken 1 or 2 "shots" a game.

No I am not. Read my post above this one. What I said was if they get Petras, which is now unlikely, and do not get thier first pick (Duggan) in 19 they should consider opening a hole for 2020, as a selling point to a stud, and not get what they would consider a second behind Duggan.

But these times they are a changin my friend. Petras looks like a no go now so IMO what they should do is pass on Wan this year. Sell Boyle the program again and pray no matter what it doesn't make it past Mansell this year. That way you can now sell Duggan an year opening and if he falls out you can go after another stud with that ammo. Basically I don't think having a qb in the class just to have one is the best way to manage the ships. We need more athletes and sometimes you have to gamble a little. To use the term chicken and egg gambling a little bit could break that cycle and honeslty if it doesn't work out, ya had 19 years all good things come to an end.

Do you really think one scholarship going to a player other than QB will improve the team in the short term? Who exactly do you think the coaching staff will land that will win one extra game?

I strongly believe that an extra QB competing, learning the system, and pushing other QBs gives the team the best chance for a good QB after Stanley. A good QB vs an average QB can win extra games for a team.

This is why I have such a disagreement with your argument. It’s like you think if Iowa passes on a QB they’ll land some five star game changing recruit, which won’t happen. Either that, or you think QB isn’t an important position, and that the team can afford to not have a good player there.

QB is one of the biggest bang for your buck position, that’s why if you complain about the lack of talent you shouldn’t also preach skipping out on your best ROI position.

Yes. The position is very important, it's why Iowa likes to take 1 every year. As you bring them in, the best change to get 1-2 who are good is to have one in each class. It's perfectly okay for the other guys to go to other places if they want to play more, and the cycle repeats.

IF I were lucky enough here is how I would do it.

Petras says yes Duggan "says" yes... errbody happy.

Petras says yes Duggan "says" no... opens up a "best available" recruit position in the 19 class and the day Duggan says no you identify 3-4 HIGH END 2020 QBs and make sure you end up with 2.

Petras says no Duggan "says" yes... GO get one of them 5ft6, 9 Second 100yd dash missiles that don't get p5 d1 offers because they are "too small" to play running back but they are pure lightning. And say congrats on your d1 ship kid you have 4 years to learn how do be the best damn punt returner in CFB. It is the only thing you are going to do. We are horrible at this( think moneyball). Again this has some risk to it as we would realistically be 2 deep at qb but boyle and the walk ons would still be there if needed and by the 18 recruit not committing you could hopefully keep boyle.

Petras says no Duggan waits and says no. You have the 18 fast kid and go get a Juco guy to keep in the pipe to back up mansell and go 2 deep in the 2021 class.

This is a giant pipe dream and obviously it's easy to eat my lunch and come up with how I wound run the world but at the end of the day I think it could be summed up as.... If you want to achieve more you have to be willing to risk more.
