It used to be the Rose Bowl was the ultimate destination we aspired to. Now it almost defaults to the conference runner up.

Are the Playoffs the new Rose Bowl?
Has the Rose Bowl lost its shine?
Are Jan 1 bowls now less of an accomplishment?
Winning the West Division title akin to _____________?

I just don't understand how to quantify accomplishments under the new college football format?

I would say that the Rose is still great to achieve, and in years when the B1G doesn't have a playoff contender (which shouldn't be too frequent), it's a pretty good prize.

For me, the ultimate prize would be making the playoff in a year when the Rose is a semi-final, and winning that game to make the championship. Obviously, this is only going to be achievable once every 3 years.

In general, a team that reaches the NY6 games is going to have something worth bragging about.

This is why it's all playing with house money if we beat Nebraska. The Rose Bowl is still the best bowl in the New Year's Six outside the Playoff bowls, and would be one helluva consolation prize for the B1G Runner-up.

The Rose Bowl has history and the San Gabriel Mountains and the one play in Japanese, but a huge part of its allure was that it was for the best team in the Big 10 (and Pac-8, 10 or whatever. It is now, and has been for some time, for the Big 10 runner-up, unless the champion is a mediocre champion. The bloom is a little bit off the rose.

Let's not turn into Al McGuire, who declined an NCAA invitation in 1970 for a trip to the NIT.

In the BCS Era the Rose Bowl was already starting to lose it's luster. Now with the playoffs in years they don't host a semi it's even less important. Still a great bowl but just not the end all be all for B1G teams.

Unfortunately I think there is a portion of our fan base that doesn't get that. They would rather go to the Rose Bowl then a national semi game.

Yes, but they are all over 60 so this should mostly take care of itself in another 20-25 years.
