where was this vaunted defense?

Idc if we held them to zero until the last god damn drive. 90 ****ing yards to win it should never happen against a “good” defense.

How can anyone argue this

All I have ever heard was how AJ E is a game changer.

Does he only play on probable passing plays?

Their OL was very strong especially keeping us off the QB. Back seven not perfect against the pass by any means. Our first major test and the whole unit must improve. They are strong but not the best in the country.

The defense was tough for the most part but when they needed a stop on that last drive, they couldnt get it. This happens all too much with Iowa. Wisky has an excellent offensive line but if pressure is applied on Hornibrook, he makes mistakes. Iowa got no-such-pressure on the last drive. Our back 7 arent very good. Horni picked them apart on that last drive because of the soft zone. I would like to see AJ play more downs especially when Hesse is a non-factor like tonight. Time will tell how this defense shapes up but they better get better at pass coverage quickly.

The defense had essentially given up 7 points until a minute left in the game (special teams gifted Wisconsin a possession on the 10 yard line, hard to put that TD on the D).

The offense had multiple opportunities near the end of regulation to drive, win the game with a score, or wind down the clock. They also had the ball within the 10 yard line twice and managed 3 points. Personally I'm tired of comments putting these losses on the D.

The defense played tough.

If it weren't for that flukey special teams gaffe, Wisconsin has 7 points with a minute left in the 4th.

You gotta count the 7 pts they gave up when they had chance to end the game with a stop and couldn't. They gave up 14 pts and they could have held the Beyer fumble to 3pts but they gave up a TD on 3rd and goal from 10 yard line. They forced zero TO.s looked like AJ forced a fumble and Iowa did not get the call. AJ seemed to spend a lot of time on the bench...the one 5 star player on both teams and elite athlete isn't a starter.

Olemuda is good tackling CB but not much of a coverage guy. Giving up that 28 yard pass on critical drive was big one.

Iowa is a 3 and 2/3 qtrs footbal team. But more often than not if you say "defense go win us the game against a highly ranked opponent or rival"......it's not happening.

The offense was rated around 90th in country and defense was in top5....which played worse relative to their capabilities.

I said they played tough. I didn't say they played flawless.

The coaches are too conservative late in games.

What do you mean “all I have ever heard.” Did you watch the Iowa Iowa State game or have you already chosen to delete that one from the memory bank?

And if you watched the game tonight, you’d have noticed that he did fine against the run

First, the OP is a f'ing idiot. Second, Hornibrook played pitch and catch all night behind a 7 man offense line that averaged about 315 lbs and 3 of them are pre season All Americans. We never got close to him all night.

This is true.

What else is true is that they never made Wisconsin play to Iowa’s DL strength. Iowa consistently fires straight off the ball making engagement for the OL easy. The only time I remember Iowa making them play in space is when Epenesa got a QB hurry early. Other than that it was a lot of bull rushing.

Played right into the hands of Wisconsin.

Exposed tonight. That is why this is a seven win team even with the schedule.

So Iowa has 3 wins now with 8 games to go. Seven wins means 4-4. They have: @Minn, @Ind, Maryland, @PSU, @Purdue, Northwestern, @Illinois, Nebraska. You see 4 losses there? Really?

Did Iowa ever blitz?

We haven't played on the road yet so we don't know how they will respond. Last year they didn't respond all that well. I imagine this will be another 8 win season. When we have a special year we beat Wisconsin. This team is who most of us thought they were, an 8 or 9 win team with too many issues to be special.

And that depth. Gased in the fourth. BAU.
Guess we were not playing UNI or the town clowns of Lames. Paying a strength and conditioning coach who can't condition, a $1million per, is almost as insane as paying a HC, who can't coach, $4million per. Where do I sign up?

Dude, I can say you're an idiot. If you remove the turnovers and Wisconsin only had two meaningful drives all night. Now I would grant you that Bucky seemed to have guys wide open their last drive, which even a mediocre quarterback could have thrown to. That's something they will have to work on, however the defense was pretty good most of the night and was good enough to win.

The D was gassed in the 4th because the offense couldn't sustain a single drive. They were playing the #1 offensive line in the country. That's not on the S&C coach.

Ya....it's on Wisconsin's OL....not the ferentz brothers & co., because it's never on them, is it.....

very easy to argue . 7 points plus beyers gift till the last minute of the game , get a clue .

Simple, 2 turnovers on special teams, 1 of them inside the 10yrd line loses games like this.

No. Not so simple. They overcame the turnover and had the lead in the 4th quarter. Our "too conservative" OC made a fantastic call on first down from his own 15 and his QB missed the equivalent of a layup. The defense gave up 200 yards rushing and over 400 yards total. That will not win you many games. Kind of like PSU and their 550 yards last year.
Dumbass

Ya, tough loss, good effort by hawkeyes. Wisconsin oline is da real deal. 200 yards rushing and didnt hear much mention from iowa dline, except epinoza a few times. Not going to win many games giving up 200 yards rushing, and losing turnover battle 3-0 tho. Tough loss.

It appeared to me that Iowa coached/played it's typical "big game" game plan of bend do not break and ultimately usually lose. Ferentz does not seem to ever understand this IMO.

BTW it would be nice if some of you would not resort to calling people names just because you do not agree with their opinion. Grow up!

The rushing stats are deceiving.

You take away the garbage 33 yd TD run at the end and they rushed for 177 yds on 43 carries for a 4.1 ypc average.

That might seem like a lot..........Iowa averaged 4.8 ypc though.

Deal with it.
