I know if ultimately falls on Fran, but who's in charge of working on the defensive end of things?

Not sure, but one of the least talked about weaknesses of this program is our assistants. Bring nothing to the table. Can't recruit at all. Way passed time for Barta to tell Fran some changes are in order.

I just dont uberstand how a team like villanova just gets open look after open look.i wonder if defense is even coached at iowa.

They have better players and don't get scared in the big time. Iowa players faulter when the games get tough.

They are over playing to try to create steals and leaving Villanova with wide open looks you need to be just as patient on defense as you should be on offense

Agree with patience on D. You reach, they teach. Also, when Clemmons went out and jBaer in, we lost a lot of quickness on D and could not get to shooters quick enough. I would have played more man and less zone. Iowa needs a lot more quickness on Def to be effective.
Iowa played much tougher D against teams like Mich St and Purdue. They were flying around more back then. Also the early in the year D created a lot of easy transition points that we did not see late in the year.

We need more quickness in the back court to be able to move our feet and pressure the ball. The minute we have to help on penetration, the minute someone is wide open.

It's the same thing we have needed on offense for years and just cannot seem to pull that player in.

Again, and look... you people have no clue. "nova went off and just hit their 3's. That happens sometimes and wishing Iowa could play at least 2 of 3, let alone 4 out of 7 and see who survives.

The zone hasn't looked effective going on several games during the bad stretch. Why did Fran go away from the man to man as much he did?

It seems that Iowa's practice environment is soft. Iowa plays like the number 3 team, that they attained in January, when teams give them space. However, they get punked by teams that refuse to give them space on the offensive end. Just look at how much space Iowa gives their opponent on defense.

Bobby Hansen said the Big East people he talked to had never seen Villinova play that well in the last three years.

Villanova played very well but you have to be honest that our perimeter defense was horrible. Easy to shoot a high percentage when you're taking totally uncontested jumpers.

That may be true but I noticed they beat Temple by 16 points at Temple so I thought this might be a tough one and unfortunately it was.

The troubling thing to me is we do not match mental and physical intensity at times of other teams. There's an in your face type of play that these upper classman always wilt under. That's what you see at the end of games and we struggle mightily. It might be part of lack of athleticism because when space is not there that requires creativity off of the bounce.

Looked like the defensive game plan was designed by General George Armstrong Custer. If not him, the Frenchie who designed the Maginot Line.

At the half the analysts thought perhaps we should get out of the zone? Do you think? And, of course, having your best perimeter defender sitting on the bench for 15 minutes in the first half, to save him for the all important second half, was a stroke of genius. Not to mention, trying to tire Villy by not calling any TOs until 40 seconds were left in the half. Who else, but a defensive innovator like Fran, would have the intestinal fortitude to try the rope-a-dope strategy in the first half of a b-ball game. Brilllllliiiaant!
