Who is the best coach in wrestling right night now...

How many points at nattys would that contribute?
Has everyone completely forgot that we lost three starters two of which would have been high AAs guaranteed, I believe all three would have been and
WITH OUR CURRENT COACHING STAFF A VERY CLEAR 2ND PLACE!!!!!! we ALSO had two team titles in the last 10 years mind you!!!

Tom should be our Head coach, but improvement is needed! I wish we could get Kemdawg on staff and it would be great if possible to get a few recent top names Along with Spencer training/coaching (paid) at the HWC.

Terry should be the Head of the HWC building a big program with contenders at each weight. working side by side with Coach Chun to develop the womens freestyle program also.
Maybe Terry can bring in a top foreign coach/wrestler that he thinks would help the program.
I would love to get one of the Japanese technical specialists.

Look I am not happy at all with 5th and more frustrated that isu finished higher than we did. But that does not mean all the coaches of the teams that finished 1-4 are better than ours. Yea let’s fire everyone and bring in a group of guys with zero coaching experience at this level and see how that works. Remember with Cass alone we finish in 2nd. It’s amazing how fast our fans turn on somebody if you think it’s coaches that turn kids away take a look at our fan base. As a whole it turns on wrestlers/coaches on a dime. I for one appreciate the kids and coaches. You think they don’t want to win and do the best they can. They tried a bunch of new things scouting reports, hired a shrink for the boys. Different practice tactics the Ferrari experiment . I can guarantee you won’t find a set of coaches that cares more about life after wrestling than ours as well as success on the mat. Right now there is nobody better out there to guide these young men. You could say psu because they are winning but if you guys knew the things I knew about Carl you might change your toon about him. Bottom line I want better results as well but as long as Carl and his kronies stick together with the slush fund culture he has built it will be virtually impossible to beat them. Maybe once every 3 or 4 years it might be possible. Next year might be one of those years. They lose a lot of poin
“If you knew what I knew about Carl”. Just say that next time so we can all move on and put you on block. Saying shit like that without providing What you know or even how you know is just a cry for attention.

How does Kemdog help us? How does bringing in more of the same do anything but do more of the same???

Why isn’t 17 seasons enough proof of what we will get from Tom?? Puts together a strong team that can make a run at some Champion ships every ten years or so…. A team that kicks ass in duals but mostly underperforms at NCAA’s? Why is it at Iowa we need 20 years of the same thing because we are to scared to see what else is out there??

I’m sorry but 4 championships in 17 years at Iowa is mediocre and I hope I never get to the point where I accept that.

The problem with thinking Tom should stay but that improvement is needed is he would have already implemented the improvement if he was capable of it. PSU has been kicking Iowa’s can around for years. There’s a lack of excitement around what should be a premier program. Spencer helped for awhile, but as others have said, his talent really just masked the problems that have been there for a long time

I couldn’t agree more with this AS LONG as Tom’s willing to let his assistants do their thing and add their own spice to the team. If Kem is still healthy enough to roll around I would love to add him to the staff. He would be one of the few Hawkeye alums I think could be very beneficial to making the team better. Would still love to get a couple guys from outside the program to add into the mix though.

Maybe once every 3 or 4 years it might be possible. Next year might be one of those years. They lose a lot of points.
They also have (by far) the #1 recruiting class coming in, which includes Luke Lilledahl, who may have won 125 this year, and Zach Ryder, who spent his HS senior year training at M2/NLWC instead of competing against inferior high school competition. The last two guys who did that? Levi Haines and Tyler Kasak, who were both out of the box high AAs in their true freshman years with a year of NLWC training under their belts. They also have Van Ness coming back, who would have been a title contender this year, and Josh Barr, who was undefeated in his redshirt year.

125 Lilledahl - high AA/potential champ
133 Nagao/Davis - NQ/potential AA
141 Bartlett - high AA
149 SVN - potential champ
157 Haines/Mesenbrink - title favorite
165 Haines/Mesenbrink - title favorite if KOT moves up
174 Facundo/Ryder - likely AA
184 Barr/Ryder - NQ/potential AA
197 Cochran - NQ
HWT Kerkvliet - title favorite

Their lineup has 3 or 4 champs, 7ish AAs, and 10 qualifiers. Someone is beating that? Is there a vulnerability anywhere at all? That's redshirting Kasak, both Mirasolas, Sealey, Gibson, and potentially Davis/Ryder, all of whom would be available to step in and cover for injuries with little drop off.

Time for what exactly, what would you like to see done
Leadership change at top. Tom will not change. Even if he tried recruits and parents wont believe it. The ship has sailed for this group to turn it around. It needs a change to produce excitement and new philosophy of training, recruiting snd preparation of team. Nothing new has to be invented….the process is out there. We all know the PSU, the OSU, cornell way. There isnt much TT does that emulates what PSU does. To stubborn to copy.

TT-unbelievable competitors, legendary competitive careers that not many have achieved. I do believe they care 100% and work their ass off to improve every yr. I just think alot of todays athletes dont like the way TT runs the program. True false or exaggerated….their reputation is not good with top recruits, refs, other coaches, table workers…..etc. bad optics to bad reality, regardless its the nations perspective on TT.

That about covers it, imo. Thanks for taking the time to lay it out.

Terry should be moved to the HWC now and let Dennis go. Start spending money recruiting guys for the HWC that are in the conversation for World and Olympic titles. This is Terry’s specialty and he should be there. Replace M* this year so hire 2 new young stud assistants… The list is large of guys that would be better and have more name recognition than Ryan… Next year Bobby should be dropped. In 2 years, if big improvement hasn’t been made to the team and recruiting Tom should be shown the door….. I know we shouldn’t talk badly about our team but if we get Angelo and not the other 2 Ferraris I see Ayala, possibly Block, Arnold, Angelo Ferrari and Kueter as the ONLY GUYS ON THE ENTIRE ROSTER capable of ever winning a title.. We have an entire roster of guys that will NEVER AA….For next year we don’t have anyone on our roster that can even AA at 133, 141, 149, 157 and 184 except Block depending on where he goes weight wise. That is HALF the weights. That is unacceptable and shows things are going down hill fast!!!!

People smarter than me might disagree but I would love this Plan! My only concern would be getting any HWC members with Terry as the coach... Is he well liked in the wrestling world anymore??

My personal opinion is that if someone’s ambitions are Russell at the next level that they’re probably four or five RTC‘s that are position much better than HWC with or without Terri. That program is going to be hard to build back up quickly. Again, my opinion only. I think if you’re going to ensure the highest rate of success the fastest it needs new blood at HWC with more contemporary, recent athletes. Also, it would be tough to find a bigger fan of Tom and Terry Brands when they were wrestling than me, but I think the time has passed for them and their popularity to pull talent in. At the end of the day will work for them 20 years ago still could work, but it’s evolved so much that I just don’t think they have the capabilities or letting their ego go to change their training philosophies

Just my opinion. It is coming down to recruiting right now! Iowa has to recruit better, build better relationships with these top kids when they are 9th-10th grade. Get the top Iowa kids, go get the best PA kids you can get and tap into New Jersey and Ohio. Iowa's most success over the last 8 years was with the PA kids they had mixed in with Marinelli from Ohio and some Iowa hammers. Pat Pop at NC State is building something strong there. He recruits the hell out these kids!

I think the current state of recruiting is a symptom of the problem, not necessarily the cause of it. It compounds it, but you can’t fix recruiting until you fix what’s turning recruits off. I don’t know if it’s culture, strategy, or technique but something is off right now. That means that the coaches either need to adjust what they’re doing to correct it…or the staff needs to see some shakeups so that it can be corrected.

Imo i think in general TT is not a good flavor for parents, HS coaches, athletes and premier club coaches. Thru their persona on TV, interviews and reputation of overtraining, injuries, and outdated training/peaking. True or false i think this is the perception. It will be tough to turn this around. Not impossible but close.

I'm convinced that the fact that they do not have PA kids anymore on the roster is hurting the program. Arnold is not a PA kid so we can't include him. I'm not the brightest, but if you get the better Iowa kids along with the better PA kids then I think that would help lol

Are you arguing with someone? I would assume most people would agree that more PA kids would be great. How do we accomplish that?

Getting 1 championship every ~4 years is pretty damn good...but that's not exactly the way it happened.

They have to get back to recruiting them. From what was said on a previous comment, the big money boosters didn't like Iowa being call PAHawkeyes? I don't care where the recruits are from, if they help us win then recruit them.

Well since you guys compare so closely with Nebraska I would have to call your high AA guarantee, BULL. But seriously guaranteed high AA, lol, one name Ridge Lovett there are no guarantees and they aren't anywhere near Ridges level either. So please stop with all of your if's from 2020 and on they didn't happen a pipe dream at best 0% fact 100% fictasous YES!

Oh and Spencer was a four time champion if he didn't get pinned by Ramos but guess what 3x it is, except for 2020, I forgot, oh nope not then either.

Cass was a returning 3x AA that even AA’d while injured. Considering his track record at that weight against everyone in it, he was about as big of a lock as anyone could get to finish top 5…

RIDGE LOVETT, JACKSON ARRINGTON, YONGER BASTIDA, SPENCER LEE, who else you want, nothing is a lock come on man you at least sound more intelligent than that. Injuries happen look at 174, missed opportunities during matches, seeding is screwed, nothing is a guarantee except for what actually happened.

Yes, I absolutely want Tom replaced as head coach and I'm not shy about saying so (or voting for it). That doesn't mean I'm into going to his boss about it. I don't talk to Tom. I haven't in years. I don't hate him but we're not best buds. I'm not going to just randomly call him up and tell him he better make changes and I think he needs to be replaced. I don't know what that accomplishes and it would be pretty doggone awkward actually. If he starts reaching out to his former wrestlers to figure out how to improve and I make the cut for people he wants an opinion from, I'd be happy to tell him my honest thoughts. Anyways, I do post on this forum. I have for years. So, this is a place where I express my opinions regarding Iowa wrestling.

I spoke of having enough respect for him (and myself) that I'm not going to his boss to try to get him canned. That doesn't mean I worship the guy to the point that I'm never going to say a bad word about his job performance on the forum I enjoy posting on, regardless of how 'active' it is...

As far as me being held to a higher standard on this forum as a former athlete, I think that's a weird take, but you do you man...

Don't forget about Real on 2023 he was about a lock for a NC too, remember.
A LOT of people were picking Alirez pretty early in the season. It’s not like Real DNP’d either. He took 2nd and lost a very competitive match….

Look, you can use the nothing is a guarantee all you want but the PROBABILITY of what you are arguing against is VERY strong. Between the 3 guys lost the data overwhelmingly supports the probability that Iowa, at the very least, scores the 6 points necessary to jump to 2nd. Hell, even if all were considerably injured, the data still supports it with past results while injured…

I picked a good Gipsy for you too, same thing I don't know how to use it.

Oh well I will try to figure it out.

Still in reality Nagao, Davis (125 is crazy I give you that) would have AA'd and got us more points if they won in the blood round, they didnt. Ohio St was definitely gonna beat PSU in '18 with guys held in much higher regards than Cass losing, they didnt, so your point has no validation.

If TnT doesn't want to make changes to the staff they better reach out and start making friends with more wrestling clubs. Seobolt (sp?) recruits alone are not going to cut it. They seem to mostly already wrestle Iowa style anyway. Do the other clubs in Iowa have some big time kids coming up through them also?
