How thoughtful of them to wake up a couple of Californians sleeping in a car - before killing them.

And on Tuesday, NBC Los Angeles reported that Mayor Butts admitted that the man and woman were not even awake – a tiny detail that was overlooked by police when they initially described their so-called confrontation.

For at least 45 minutes, police attempted “to rouse” them in an effort “to de-escalate the situation,” said Butts. It is the first public explanation for what transpired early Sunday morning during the time between the initial call and the shooting. Police previously had stated responding officers saw the woman had a gun, retreated to behind cover, and then gave orders for the couple to exit the vehicle.

“Obviously at some point they were conscious because somebody felt threatened,” said Butts, a retired law enforcement officer who previously had served as police chief in other cities. He said it is important for police to finish their investigation, and verify facts, before commenting further.

I guess you're better off driving home drunk; rather than risk waking up dead to a hail of bullets :(

Back when I was young in my little home town, if one was told to go home by the police, one went on home. If he/she didn't they were in for trouble. Not like getting shot trouble, as our police chief was a little like Barney Fife(kept the bullet in his shirt pocket).

Maybe cowards should find another line of work other than law enforcement.

Well, in all fairness to the cops, I almost understand the conundrum they faced.

My little boy sleeps with a Power Ranger laser gun (it's his brothers; I don't plant it in his bed: I swear!). So every morning I am forced to 'rouse' him in order to 'de-escalate the situation.' Wouldn't want him to wake up growly with a loaded laser gun, just itchin' to use it on some innocent bystander now would we? o_O

I appreciate what cops do and I know there are many, many more good cops out there than bad cops ... I am going to call it like it is but most of the guys I know from high school were not the sharpest knives in the drawer and it was either become a police officer or join the armed forces.

Not to place all police officers in the same category ... just a general comment ...
