Very impressed where Meyer is currently. Left his legs opened, not enough hand def IMO. Solidify his ranking in my mind.

Hawks were mostly the benefactor of that new 4-pt near fall rule, I think...but on that instance it was the worst rule change ever according to the people sitting by me. :p

I love Meyer but I was disappointed in his performance today, as I'm sure he was. That was a brilliant headlock by Cruthmer--I didn't even see it coming in the replay--so hard to fault Meyer for that other than the fact that he has a history of coming out cold, and he knew that. I thought he was going to get headlocked again when he got the takedown--I screamed "No, Meyer!" about a half second before he got the takedown. I give him a lot of credit for keeping his poise and coming back. I guess I was most disappointed that he got taken down with 45 seconds left and lost his riding time. All 40K people in the stadium knew that Crutchmer was going to fire off a few more shots. All 40K people in the stadium knew that he was quick and could get to Meyer's legs. Hard to play defense against a guy like Crutchmer and hope to be successful. I wanted to see him put some distance between himself and a similarly ranked guy, the way Gilman and Sorensen and Brooks did.

Lets talk about balls. He fought off his back and wrestled old school Iowa style the rest of the match. I know your not badmouthing him or anything but I feel like it was an excellent headlock, and being able to get off his back was amazing. Right before his takedown... I said he needs to go upper body and get it back. He was a Jr. National Greco Champ and nows what he is doing. He made crutchmer bail out. I wanted that win for the kid but you know what.... I feel he believes so much in himself - like an old school hawk that he doesn't need a moral boost. He is going to keep rolling on and get better and better. I am a little fired up.... and no... I wasn't tailgating all morning... I am however safe and sound at home and ready for a Spotted Cow or two to watch the football game.... Go Hawks!

I agree, I thought Alex, sans the NF, wrestled well. Disappointed, yes. Deterred, no.

All Alex has to do is some way not always come out cold. Told my friend with me darn this always seems to happen with him but I also said he is a scrapper and would not surprise me that he still will win even if Okie is ranked #1.. I just love the way Meyer wrestles not afraid to make mistakes cause he is just going to keep coming at you.

He went into coast mode once he was in the lead and got burned. Learn from it and protect your damn legs!

He did great, I was very impressed, but didn't he get the illegal hold call to get off his back? Had it not been for that, I don't believe he could have lasted the whole period on his back.

Well the hold didn't go illegal because he just laid there. He fought off his back and it slipped to illegal. Brands talked about it in his post match interview, how he was defending it and Smith said he didn't think he would get the fall anyway because he was not in position to get the pin. I think he said he was too hi and could not adjust to get the pin.

This was what I found to be most disappointing about Alex's match. He's typically charging late in the match, and he let off the gas. It's understandable -- he didn't want to do anything dumb -- but he learned a valuable lesson. The best defense if often a good offense. Get that late takedown, yourself, and put him away. Easier said than done, yes, but you're always better off stalking and attacking, with a lead in a close match, than running. We've all seen countless guys get burned by trying to protect leads in close matches. Always better to keep after him and, if nothing else, keep the pressure on him. Once you go into retreat mode, you become a sitting duck. Few things worse in wrestling than giving up a last-second takedown to lose a match. I highly doubt Alex lets this happen again.

The good news is that he knows he's right there with the #1-ranked guy in the nation. He remains a threat to place very highly at Nationals and maybe even win the thing.

No, the armed slipped out and then it was just the head head and it was slipping out enough and he was turning on his side. It seemed he would surely get out.
