Who should Jan go after in the portal

I would take a good hard look at Katie Vasecka, freshman at South Dakota State.

With the freshman they have and the freshman they have coming in. I really don’t know who she’d likely target. I’d Guess interior player of some sort. Stretch 4 who can play defense & rebound. We have a lot of guards. Deal & Houston are guards. That might be a reason to ask Kylie to come back?

Obviously you get the best player that would fill a need, but I’ve said before they could use an incoming Junior.

Assuming Kennise Johnson redshirts or transfers we have no players that’ll be a senior in 26/27. Need to balance those classes out.

6'2" 3 or 4 that can drive, dish nd make shots at the rim, can nail 3s, rebound out of her mind and get a steal and assist along the way. Other than that, I like what we have and what we have coming in next year. (same thing all other schools want)

My thoughts…

A ball handler/playmaker. Someone who can break a press without panicking, and drive and dish. Bonus if they can be a good defender.

A “three and D” player. This team needs another consistent outside threat, but they also need someone to handle the tough perimeter assignments on the defensive end with Kylie and Syd gone.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better transfer from the portal than potentially getting Kylie back for one year. She is above average defender who is already got chemistry with the team. Could bridge the gap where soph/junior classes are thin.

I've never seen someone more in need of a couch to crash on than Paige Bueckers.

We need a knock-down shooting 2 and a legitimate 4.

I'm not sold that Hannah can become a legitimate 4.
I tend to agree given her/HS lack of an outside shot. The problem IMO is HS is causing a backup problem at the 5. If she does not play the 4 next year, then Heiden is the backup again and so is the 5 from Alaska (can't think of her name). I am not sure that is going to work very well, but again, JMO.

Love Hannah but her skills that are high level is near the basket.
That's the problem. We can't have 3 players good enough to get rotational minutes that can only play the 5. Hannah MUST move to the 4 this off-season. She MUST put in the work to develop her outside shot and handles.

So to get back to your question, I'd say that maybe a Molly Davis type that can come in and backup Guyton and help break the press. Just a one year player though.

Way too early to think about this, but your best guesses would look at teams that have outstanding talent coming in. Good players getting recruited over will often look for playing time elsewhere.

Or great players at smaller programs that might want to try the bigger stage. -- Lucy Olsen

Another category would be players that you recruited in high school that might be stuck in a depth chart on a star roster.

At this point you can't really predict who might be available.

All indications from coaches seem to have a lot of faith in Mallegni's talent and potential, so a lot of this depends on how much they are banking on it. They did this two years ago banking on Stuelke and O'Grady. It panned out, though a little different than anticipated. I think Jan probably does that again, thinking that Teagan or Hannah will be ready to play at the 4 and Heiden/Hays combo at 5.

The guard court could use some consistent scoring from that 3 position, but it's not like McCabe and Stremlow are going to regress. They might want someone taller in there, so perhaps they look at that, or they consider what they have for ball handling should Guyton or Deal get injured.

WNBA players not available for the portal.

Layla Hayes. Hannah has to know that playing the 5 just won't work next year. It's not going to work against Lauren Betts this season or next. Hannah has done a respectable job at the post but giving up 5 inches just isn't a fair matchup. I'm sure the recruiting talk with Heiden and Hayes didn't involve any competition with Hannah and I hope neither develop ambitions to hit the portal. Stuelke has shown improvement from the freethrow line, there's no reason to believe she can't hit a 15 foot jumper from the wing or elsewhere.

In regard to Hannah and the 4, she had surgery last summer. She had little time make the transition for this year. To state the obvious, she is very athletic, she seems to want to improve and any WNBA dreams depend upon it!

I don't agree with this beyond the assertion that Hannah needs to work to expand her game. I don't think either Ava nor Layla will be ready to shoulder 25 minutes+ next year. Hannah will need to switch from the 4 and 5 next year, with the five being her primary position.

It is what it is, pending portal.

Hannah will for sure play minutes at 5 again next year, especially if the team is playing faster.

I think we will see Addie Deal starting a lot of games and Journey Houston we’ll get a few minutes. Then there’s the possibility of Kylie coming back.So I think we need to get a talented quick forward up front to help out.

I expect Deal to start every game assuming she stays healthy and injury free. Similar to when Caitlin came in.

These are Ava's stats in the four recent games she has gotten significant minutes. That works out to 13.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.25 block shots, 81% from the foul line and .5 fouls per 30 minutes on the court. That is very impressive for a freshmen getting limited minute.

She has proven herself every time she gets some minutes.

This. Not just for Iowa, but she has dreams of the WNBA. She'll never last in the league at a post player at 6'2". Its all on her at this point.....

Iowa needs a 6’6” player or taller. Jan’s tutoring and you change the game on the defensive end by 5-10 pts a game. If not more.
