Colbert, Wade, Welch
We will see far less base defense than we’ve seen all year. We need speed on the field against a pass happy offense. Look for Iowa to play a lot of nickel, especially after the first couple possessions. We will see hooker playing a lot of nickel, with stone and Gervase at safety’s. In base defense you will see Welch, wade, and Colbert, but only on obvious running downs.
We will go a lot of nickel. The pass rush and our tall d line will have a huge impact on this game. Ramsey is a short qb.
I remember in Nebraska blow out last year he came in and was backup to jewell. Got an int that game so he does have experience playing MLB from last year.
Actually against NW they slid Niemann to MIKE and put Kevin Ward in at LEO.
Welch seems more suited to MLB than Colbert or Wade, and he has more experience than the younger guys. I suppose Jones could come in for the second half, depending on how well Kristian plays. That was a BS call on Amani. He just hit the poor bastard so hard the official threw the targeting flag.
I hate to sound so pessimistic, but Amani Jones' chances of getting that over turned are about the same as Ronnie Harmon's chances of being elected mayor of Iowa City.
I don't know a breakdown by snaps, but Iowa seemed to be 5 DBs more often than not.
Hooker as a kind of Rover with the usual 2 safeties, 2 corners. Hooker is more than capable at run support.
Yeah ... even though Wade is listed as the starting LEO, I'd still expect for Phil to opt to play with the "rover" package more ... my expectation was that they were also "trying it out" against the Gophers in advance of playing IU.
Of course, if Wade looks really good in practice ... they'll still possibly go with our base D, at least on early downs (based on formation).
