Insurance companies like Chubb, PURE, and AIG have their own contracted fire prevention partners that dispatch to houses in the path of a fire. They remove fuel, apply gel, set up sprinklers, etc. to protect the homes they insure. In the past these efforts have saved many homes. It is too early to have any success stories from this fire and I know in some areas they were not allowed in because it was too intense/unpredictable, but it would not surprise me if some of the homes left untouched were not insured/protected by these carriers.

I saw the CEO for Waste MGMT who paid $9M for his house on Malibu on the beach had built using concrete for walls. He also had a fire proof roof. He also had had a water truck spray down his house while neighbors houses went up.
