I don't think they have been trying to undermine them, just getting their finances in order. The one thing I still think is stupid is Saturday delivery. Seriously, just do it 5 days a week and be done with it.

How are they doing that? By making them pay health services into the future or employees not born yet and acting surprised when they aren't turning profits since the creation of the law that changes how they pay the pensions.

The efficiency of the U.S. Postal Service has been in
question by both political parties. There are too many
rural post offices which do not generate a profit due to
high overhead expenses. Saturday delivery is no longer
needed in the 21st century. The big question is this:
Should the federal government get out of postal delivery
and allow private enterprise to run it like a real business?

This depends on if you think mail delivery is vital to our country. If it is, then you may just have to eat the cost and consider it an enterprise that shouldn't create a profit like our roadway system. But if you don't think it's vital, then we should probably allow private companies the chance to see if they can do better.

If congress hadn't burdened it with future pension payments that no business faces, it would be operating just fine. In fact, nearly every time the service has come up with ways to save costs, congress hasn't let them do it. Most of its problems have been inflicted upon it by congressional Republicans in an effort to make it look bad and give them a reason to kill it. Benjamin Franklin would be quite appalled.

Why is the profit of the post office so important? And if it was private there would be no incentive for a company to even carry any rural service unless it was priced to the moon. The USPS already transits a ton of UPS and Fedex parcels into rural territories as it is.

What an idiot comparison. I guess I should not be surprised
Why? The Post Office is a vital part of our country, or at least used to be. Without it, we would have been left in the stone-age when it came to communication. The success of our country owes a great debt to our world class postal service. So seen in this light, why wouldn't it be comparable to the military?

It makes me wonder if people think that people who live in rural locations do not deserve mail delivery??

Please don't equate the postal service to the military. Both are going to "lose" money but one is needed and the other people could probably live without.
You sure don't our country's history if you think the need for the US Postal Service was optional.

Everybody is free to move.

That is quite literally the dumbest thing I've seen on here in a while.

Lets play that out a bit and have all the farmers who grow all our food move to the cities so they have contact with the rest of the world. Sure you don't have to pay for the stupid rural post offices no more. . . But then again you don't have any freaking food.

Oh yeah and you have a lot more urban sprawl.

I think he was being facetious.

Not to mention that rural locations have the worst access to digital communication which makes them the most dependent on physical mail delivery.

I don't really live in a deeply rural area. I'm like 4 miles from a town with 2,000 people in it and about 6 miles (in the other direction) from a city with 100,000 people in it. But internet service is pretty good where I live.

Technically I live in the South Bend metro area though even though there are several farms on my road.

The postal service was created when their were not giant companies capable of doing the service. However, in today's world, private companies could do the same service better for a lower price. The Dems want to keep it for one reason, 300K union members.

Want to know the crap service they are doing, in Marion, in new housing areas, they set up one central mail box drop, they won't even come to your house anymore. You have to drive to your mail box. Brilliant move USPS.

Used to be is the correct statement. Everything can be done electronically these days, it's used a lot less because of it. It's a dying need. Let the private companies handle the rest.

Well once the USPS is done, UPS and FedEx will likely need new workers, so it's a win win. Liberals love holding onto useless services simply so people don't have to adapt.

The covered wagon was vital part of our country to at one time.

There needs to be some adjustments for mail delivery to continue. Doing away with Saturday delivery would be a start. Community mail boxes instead of door to door delivery would be another.

Sounds like a corporate money saving maneuver. I figured you would applaud such behavior.

See, that's the problem the Postal Service faces. The wingnuts whine and whine that it's losing money, but every time they try and institute a cost cutting measure, the wingnut just whine and whine about it. They just can't win.

did someone really compare our Military to the Postal Service?

And I don't know if I would say the Postal Service is working. Could we let an outside service handle it that is more efficient and not lose billions per year. Maybe.

No, look into the problem. You could not. It would be impossible for any for profit interest to run the post office as the Rs dictate they must and make money. You might also be interested to know that the USPS is not taxpayer funded. It is a solid example of good government screwed up by the people who can't stand that example.
