Will we ever be a cashless society?

A free society has free use of currency. Letting the government take control of your spending, flagging you for your spending, being able to turn off your account, is not a free society. We all know that if things turn to an all crypto or digital format, the government will try to control it.
Well, my question was more about effectively being cashless, in that fewer and fewer businesses will accept cash. Not so much would we do away with currency.

I think the former is more likely - it becomes such a pain in the ass to pay with cash that you just don’t.

I agree. As far as ease of use, cash is not it. However, once it is printed and is in the hands of the public, cash is almost impossible to manipulate on the individual level.

Cash will always be useful for all the reasons given. Here is another one, it is tangible, it is real. Your "bank account" is one push of a button by somebody with power from being zapped to zero, or better yet, never existed. But cash will always be there.

And the bank card companies, they are the modern-day mafia, taking a 2% vig on every transaction in the country. You want to talk about a racket, it's the mob's dream scenario. What a huge drain on our economy that Visa, Mastercard, and the rest of them have their fingers into every transaction. This is one place I would be in favor of the government stepping in and making a law outlawing or severely restricting these fees.

While credit cards, tap to pay, Venmo, etc make spending money without cash super easy….if the internet goes down at scale, it’s all worthless
