HUGE win for the hawks today. But boy was it ugly...and pretty much handed to us by a ton of bad turnovers at inopportune times by Wisky and their Ruddock-esqe qb. So while it's great to be thrilled with being 5-0, there are definitely some things that need to be cleaned up if we are going to have a shot at beating someone like Northwestern:

1. RB play - fantastic! Canzeri is a legit Big 10 running back who can catch out of the backfield. It's been a long time since we had this. We still aren't getting our backups with potential reps. Daniels just isn't getting it done. He's had 3 yrs of running up the middle for gains of 2, much like Weismann. It's time to start using Wadley and Mitchell and getting them some much needed experience.

2. OL Play - really really bad. I don't know how many times I saw our right tackle (Ike) just destroyed by his man, who would walk right in and take a crack at our star QB. The one guy who can ill afford to get dinged up. We are used to having awesome tackles. This year, our tackles are not Big 10 caliber and they need to improve asap.

3. QB Play - fantastic! CJ's completion percentage was pretty awful, but having an ability to scramble for an extra 5 yards on a broken play is the diff between a win and a loss. He also threw the ball deep, which we never had since Stanzi.

4. WR Play - very poor. Not Big 10 caliber players. While there weren't many drops, those guys are slow, unathletic, and don't run crisp routes. We were really missing Tevan today. Where is our 4 star WR recruit from in state, Scheel? I thought he was a stud. Has he even seen the field this season?

5. Defense - love those guys. While they aren't the most highly touted guys, our DL is near the top of the Big 10, and our CB is an all american. This year, we virtually ever hear about the LBs, and that's a breath of fresh air compared with last year, as our LBs were an eye sore to watch. Ott is fun to watch, and King is going to be starting in the NFL. We will look back at this D 5 years from now and realize how much talent we had and miss it.

4. WR Play - very poor. Not Big 10 caliber players

I'm not sure what more is expected of VandeBerg. He grabbed every pass that was catchable today and most of his receptions were tough catches in heavy coverage. MVB still leads all B10 receivers in catches; he is on pace to catch 65-70 for the season.

Jerminic Smith is going to be a fine WR IMO. He was playing in his 5th game as a Hawkeye on the road against a very tough defense. Many of the passes his way were overthrown. To conclude that JSmith is a very, very poor WR is way too harsh and exceedingly premature.

Tough conditions today. On the road and windy against one of the better defenses in the B10. Pass game was not great but some of that was on the QB also.

I don't know if our o-line was really really bad. I know it wasn't great in the passing game at times, but Canzeri ran for 125 yards today.

His cart doesn't tell us anything we didn't know. Everyone is aware Iowa didn't exactly land 4 and 5 star recruits the past few years.
Our players need two or three years to develop including gaining weight. We hope they work hard and learn quickly enough to be big ten caliber. For example; Jordan Canzeri - Senior. Center - senior. Right defensive end - senior. Juniors - King, Beathard, etc.
Occasionally, Iowa finds a diamond walk-on. Dallas Clark. Bob Sanders was not highly recruited, but, what a stud. On and on it goes. Same old, same old.
Where Iowa got scewed, and caused us HUGE problems was Bielema talking Melvin Gordon into changing commitment to Wisky, leaving Iowa high and dry. By that time also, other good running backs had committed elsewhere. We all watched M. Gordon tear it up in the BIG..
Wisky, without Clement is hurting now. We need to keep Canzeri healthy. Boy, does he take a beating and keeps getting up. CJB gets hit but keeps going. Our team MUST be in sync to have success. Last year, we didn't have it, but not for lack of trying. Our back seven were too young, too thin, and inexperienced.
The bottom line is, the Hawks must keep improving, stay together, and stay committed. They did that today in Madison. We very easily could have lost the game, but it would not have been due to lack of effort!
I think Fry said one time, " we aren't the sexiest team". Talk to a player or parents of a player, and ask them what is required to not only be a good football player, but a good football team. I personally believe our coaching staff are fantastic. I know about criticism, and yes, coaches aren't perfect either. However, we all know that game discussions and second guessing is part of it with the fans and t.v. "experts". So what? Players and coaches get ripped on. They know it goes with the territory too. So what? All coaches understand that stuff, but they get back to business.
I attended the bowl game in Jacksonville last season. Tough game for Iowa. But, here we are, back again for another round of football. I also attended one of the Orange Bowl games, the Outback, Capitol One, Rose bowl, Holiday bowl. But, so what? I enjoy and appreciate football at all levels. I love high school games as well.
Former Hawkeye players return to I. City to enjoy games as well. They know and appreciate what the team is going through. Ed Podolak knows, Bob Sanders, Chuck Long, Dallas Clark, Shonne Green, Brian Bulaga, Micah Hyde, and hundreds more.
I believe the Wisconsin series of games is about 50/50. Am I right? 44 games each, or so. But, I know this. Today wasn't a sexy game, but lots of football players and coaches know it was a slugfest, brutal hitting, super competitive, and tough to score points. Either team could have won. Very closely and fiercely contested by all. What a day to be a Hawk fan and happy to celebrate a victory. Next season, Wisconsin may defeat us. Time will tell. For now, enjoy our early victories, but remember, we very likely will have some defeats. So what? Football is a great game to play AND observe. Big Ten pre-game parties are fun. So glad Iowa fans are loyal fans. Great to be a Hawk. For Wisky today, you tried your hardest also. Congratulations to you as well. You could have won the game too, but be proud of your team and their effort. You know they wanted a victory also.
Thank you - both teams - for entertaining us.

@iowalaw: if you think our line play was atrocious, I don't think you have a very high football IQ. Our pass protection won't grade out very high...probably a C-. 2 of the sacks were coverage sacks where CJ stayed in the pocket and nothing was available. Our run blocking will grade out fairly well. Keep on mind that Wiskys run D was ranked high nationally coming into the contest. We had a back that rushed for 125 yrds. The line play wasn't atrocious. It was a weird game and CJ missed a few open guys, throwing in windy conditions I might add. We moved it well enough in the first half, our punter did a great job in the second half, and our defense put the icing on the cake.

Daniels is playing hert. I think you should consider a different grade for his report cart.

Hurt or not his grade would be the same, if that is all he has right now perhaps the coaches should rest him and have him heal. He has the potential.

I think our line just looks like we have a bunch of underclassmen playing. I just want to see them get better every week. It might appear that they took a step back last week, but Wisconsin is a different caliber team than we have seen before. Hopefully, we will see improved line play next week and again against Northwestern.

cannot have "fantastic" running back play with "really really bad" O line Play, something has to give there. O line was great supporting the run, not so good on the pass protection.

Agree. Run blocking was good. Pass blocking was very poor. MVB may catch everything that comes to him but he gets no separation. If you can't get separation, Beathard's window is going to be tiny to throw to and yards after catch will be non-existent. I'd like to see someone other than Daniels backing up Canzeri right now. Defense was fantastic. King is amazing.

It's actually VERY possible for a running back to play well and an OL not to. Do you think the Vikings have the #1 OL in the league just because AP is their running back? AP is going to get yards no matter how awful his OL is. Same is true yesterday for Canzeri. Most of his yardage came after contact, often when there was very little hole to run in, if any. Hit his the holes fast and showed some amazing moves. Did you see his run after the screen pass? He made a big play out of nothing.

It is irrelevant whether or not Daniels is hurt. He's getting all of the 2nd team carries. He says he's 100%, though, and so does Kirk. He just doesn't have a whole lot of burst, and seems to go down immediately on contact. It seems like he is playing because he has the Ferentz union card...unless those of you think Daniels playing "hurt" at 2 yards per carry gives us a better chance to win than Wadley and Mitchell (who both average closer to 6 yrds per carry).

I agree that the o-line needs work in pass protection but when a rb can get over 100 yds some credit needs to be given to the line. There were cutback lanes for Canzeri and he didn't hit them so I think he could have gotten a lot more. Pass protection yesterday wasn't good but I put much of that blame on the coaches. Leaving an inexperienced tackle out on an island was a head scratcher. Everyone knew Wisconsin's blitzing was going to give our line fits but we didn't seem to scheme against it. That's on the coaches. We have talent at the line but it's up to the coaches to have them prepared.

The Daniels RB issue is weird. He looks like a slower less instinctive Juggernaut to me. Wonder what the coaches see in practice that doesn't appear in the games. Or perhaps they don't see from the other RBs. For example, if those other guys cannot recognize blocking schemes and get our MVP killed on a blindside hit then a 2 ypg Daniels is probably a safer bet. Still, one does wonder.

The OL struggled in pass blocking but played well when we ran. Need the LT back in action ASAP though. Maybe sit he and T Smith next week but need them thereafter. Our line play is usually good and the young tackles will get better if they stay healthy.

The WRs just aren't very good. Vandy can't be the primary target because he's too easy to cover deep. He's got great hands and is a good compliment to a big play receiver. Jerminic Smith looked fast but has mostly looked a little lost.

The defense.....held Bucky to 6 points at home. 'nuff said.

It would be weird to get a report card from your teacher with a long narrative about you but no actual grade.

Dude, I love Canzeri but he is NO Adrian Peterson. He is only going to do so much on his own. I just dont think you can post rationalize your statement, as the RB's were very good and the OL was a split decision. Its not like our RB's were breaking 4-5 tackles per run. C'mon man!

OL grade poor and RB play good makes no sense....and saying QB play was fantastic is ridiculous! 77 passing yards throwing 33% completion % with 1 (lucky not 2) picks and 1 to pass (2yard) is far from fantastic....love CJB and I understand the love affair many have of him but that will be his worst game of his career, or else we might lose a few games....yes smith going down hurt and duzey still out hurt but fantastic QB play, cmon man
