*****Women’s Selection Show Thread*****

FWIW, here's the video. Put it on full screen. As you can see, she made 2 fists followed by immediate clapping.

Based on that type of body language, was she really pissed?

She looks pissed to me. Slow to stand up with a token applause and no smile that I could see. It's not like she can flip the committee off on camera...

This is a good draw for us. Stanford has proven to be vulnerable multiple times. I’d rather be a 2 to Stanford’s 1 than be in a region with SC (who will kick MD’s ass and would do the same to us) or UConn (who will smoke VA tech and would likely outlast as well, just like they did at PK).

I agree with this. Women will NOT let what happened last year happen this year which will take them to Seattle and provided no upsets happen they just have to get by Duke and Stanford to make it to Dallas.

They are ranked #2 in the country......
The football team was #2 in the country in Week 7 of 2021. Did you think they were the second best team at the time?
As much as I enjoy watching the Iowa Women, they aren't one of the top 4 teams in the country. Being named #2 in a meaningless poll doesn't matter at all.

The ladies are ranked #2 at the END of the season. Big difference from #2 in week 7.

Standford certainly is beatable. Frankly I'm not overly impressed with UCONN either. Fudd's not near back to her capabilities, and Geno's going to need her to ramp up.

TV: TBA
RADIO: Hawkeye Radio Network | Sirius/XM 109 or 196

Also Playing in Iowa City

WHO: #7 Florida State (23-9 overall, 12-6 in ACC) vs. #10 Georgia (21-11 overall, 9-7 in SEC)
WHEN: Friday, March 17th (time TBA)
WHERE: Carver Hawkeye Arena (Iowa City, Iowa)

Florida State, Georgia, and Southeastern Louisiana

Florida State has had an up and down season . During the first NCAA Tournament reveal there were some bracketologists projecting the Seminoles as one of the four seeds. The selection committee did not pick them, however, and they haven’t been in those discussions since.

The Seminoles have ranked wins over #13 Duke and #19 North Carolina. They appear to play much better at home (14-1) than they do on the road (7-5) or on neutral courts (3-2).

Iowa and FSU have played four common opponents. The Seminoles beat Purdue (76-75 on a neutral court), Wisconsin (92-87 in Madison), and NC State (91-72), but lost to UConn (85-77 at UConn).

FSU plays at one of the quickest paces in the country. They don’t shoot particularly well from anywhere, but rebound well. Of note, the Seminoles’ best player—Ta’Niya Latson—missed the ACC Tournament with an injury. I believe she’ll be back for the NCAA Tournament, but if she’s slowed down by the injury at all that could put FSU at a disadvantage.

Georgia doesn’t have a top 25 win this year, in part because the SEC was down overall this year and there were only three ranked SEC teams. The Bulldogs have played three common opponents with Iowa. They beat Wisconsin (68-60 on a neutral court), beat Belmont (66-55 at home), and lost to NC State (65-54 at home).

Georgia is much better defensively compared to offensively and plays at a much slower pace than Florida State or Iowa. The Bulldogs don’t shoot the ball great on two-point attempts, and are a bad shooting team from three-point range. They do rebound relatively well offensively, but are a poor defensive rebounding team.

Southeastern Louisiana won a share of the regular season Southland Conference title, then won the Southland Conference tournament. Iowa and Southeastern Louisiana do not have any common opponents. The Lions did play three Power 5 opponents, losing to Utah (99-62), Alabama (55-45), and LSU (63-55).

The Lions are another defensive team and they play at an extremely slow pace. The good news is they don’t shoot well from anywhere and aren’t great on the offensive glass.

Typical E$PN, the South Carolina/Boston/Staley show.
Lobo's pick for national player of the year was Clark. One of the other hosts who was asked said Boston. Aliyah Boston, are you kidding? She's no doubt the most overrated player in the country. Her stat line: 13.8 ppg (not even in top 75); 9.4 rebounds per game (30th in the country); 1.8 assists per game (not in the top 100); 2.0 blocks per game (25th in the country);

Iowa isn’t a final four team
As much as I enjoy watching the Iowa Women, they aren't one of the top 4 teams in the country. Being named #2 in a meaningless poll doesn't matter at all.

Yet we just beat a 1 seed and a 2 seed within the last two weeks.

If you don’t think we are at least a contender for the Final 4, you haven’t been paying attention to this season across the country.

This has been discussed ad nauseum already but there is only one elite team left in the game — SC. Everyone else is vulnerable. Stanford, UConn, Maryland, Texas all lost multiple games to average teams this year. Notre Dame is no longer Notre Dame. Neither are Baylor, Tennessee, Ohio State, Duke, etc the programs they used to be.

Even if we say Uconn is indeed elite (which isn’t a hot take but assumes they’re all healthy), that still raises the number of standing blue bloods to 2. In effect, blue bloods in WBB are almost extinct. That has created a vacuum and Iowa is certainly a contender for a final four spot because of it. This was not the case last year and was never even plausible any year before that bc all of the 5 star talent went to the same 8-10 schools year in and year out. They’re all over the place now. Add the portal to that as well significant turnover in HC positions and the game is just different.

We certainly have a path to the Final 4 with Clark (the best player in the country) + Czinano (one of the most efficient posts) and 3 starters rounding out the most experienced starting five in the nation.

And Clark as a guard averaged 7.5 rebounds per game. What a joke.

IMO Gabby Marshall's play down the stretch, especially during the BTT, elevated Iowa's offense to elite status.

Since 1994 (when the tournament expanded to 64), there have bee 28 champions crowned.
#1 Seed has won 22 times
#2 Seed has won 4 times
#3 Seed has won 2 times
Seeds #4-7 & 9 have made it to the Final Four

In spite of those stats, I agree that things are different this year. Iowa could win it all. Bu a Cinderella team could sneak into the Final Four.

I think the word “elite” should be used cautiously. It should be reserved for programs who are truly the cream of the crop. Iowa is not there (yet). But we certainly have all the makings of a very talented team that is on the precipice of breaking thru.

We are the best offense in the country hands down. Clark, Czinano and 3 guards who can shoot about 40% from 3. Very battle tested, amazing chemistry, and add to that, three rotational players who have become reliable enough to let our starters finally get some rest but also bring unique strengths to this team. We also faced stiff competition this year and definitely came out on the other side a better team. All bodes well.

What doesn’t of course is that we had some bad Ls this season that we just can’t ignore and neither could the selection committee. The onus is on us — if we truly are capable of becoming elite — to prove that we have learned our lessons and are as good as the previous graf promises.

If you don’t say it’s Boston, Staley will call you a racist.

I dont know if Gonzaga will get that far but would be interesting to see them play Iowa. They have two twin sisters who played for a HS not far from me. The post player their senior year is the daughter of a friend of mine. She played college VB however. I called one of their last games their senior year.

Iowa isn’t a final four team
Skepticism about Iowa’s Final Four chances is certainly warranted. I’m Johnny one note about this, but teams with Iowa’s defensive profile struggle mightily to make the Final Four. 45 of the last 48 teams to make the WBB Final Four finished the regular season in the top 15 in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Iowa finished 49th in adjusted defensive efficiency, which is Iowa’s only top 50 defense since the advent of advanced WBB stats in 2009-10. Iowa’s defensive improvement is real, but it still would be a statistical oddity for a team like Iowa to make the Final Four.

I don't know squat about women's hoops but Clark and Marshall can shoot the rock and are sexay and have swagger.

Men's team sucks Johnson.
