Women’s Wrestling at Iowa?

And that's another good point. Those of us who wrestled know the many positive things the sport did for us. It's not far-fetched to believe it could also be good for young girls and women as well in this respect.
my daughters left some pretty good scars on each other..... ever notice how many good wrestlers were brothers close in age? I think my girls would have loved wrestling....

Women's wrestling is fantastic, period. If you don't care maybe don't say anything instead of complaining loudly to the Internet about how you don't, says way more about you.
Big deal. Some care, some don't, just like every other topic on the planet. You're allowed to voice your displeasure or approval either way. Free Country at the moment.

Everything you said is 100% correct, however it makes you look like a total asshole if you do. Being able to voice your displeasure doesn't mean you have to voice your displeasure.

I haven't read Andy's article so maybe this is in it...but I understand the fundraising for the program will start once the dollars for the training facility are fully and completely raised. I heard it will take $1.5M to kick off the program. I wasn't quick enough to think to ask what is included in those first dollars and what is not.

Regulate speech on a message board, especially the cesspool? It's a legit topic. I may disagree with him in some respects but these are conversations that should happen. A lot of fans may feel this way and it's something that should be sold. For example, I have no idea who most of the girls wrestling in Who's #1 are except for a few names like Rose Cassioppi. For that reason alone, I'll probably watch because she's "family." That's how I started tracking Felicity Taylor...she was at Night of Conflict here in IC and was pretty impressive. Some may not care now but how much does that change if they were committed to come to Iowa, ISU, PSU etc? Quite a bit I would imagine.

I think everything is being viewed through a woke/not woke lens these days. It's my view that the ladies will eventually win them over.

Heck no, I don't give sh*t about most other men's sports, just wrestling. So if they cut the men's soccer team, I don't really care, and if they add women's wrestling, then I'm for that. So what if they have more women's sports now. Don't care about them either, just wrestling. This is a wrestling board, and I am FOR wrestling.
you don’t know much it appears, there is no men’s soccer team, only a women’s team. there were 4 men’s teams dropped this past year. all due to finances, unlike what others on here have stated. pretty short sighted and narrow minded thinking only one sport has any importance. probably due to your skill level or lack thereof.

I do believe the "value" is being oversold by a fair amount, people have nothing to point to but bullshit and conjecture. On top of that some think the Money Fairy is just looking for someplace to land, near Iowa City apparently.

That said, I taped all of the Olympic Wrestling and watched damn near every minute of any American, male or female. I thought the gals put on a decent show, no issues watching them whatsoever, they did a good job.

But do I care if the University of Iowa has a Women's Wrestling Team? No, I don't. If it happens, fine by me. If not, that's fine too.

I hear you but this is helping men's wrestling not hurting it. Title IX ain't going away and women's wrestling helps offset the mens numbers. Compliance not money is the biggest issue for programs being dropped. Funds can always be raised.
there were 4 men’s sports dropped all based on funding

Compliance with respect to Title IX is still applicable with respect to dropping any sports. Funding might be the cause, but any changes made by the athletic department must result in a move towards equality as an end result. No athletic department is truly equal with respect to Title IX in terms of $ spent on both sides of the gender ledger. There’s always some degree of imbalance and the department needs to continually work on moving towards equality. The department I work in has football so there are far more women’s sports than men’s. That said for official visits the football team and MBB stay in nice hotels and eat at nice restaurants. Gymnastics, w water polo and swimming sleep on air mattresses in the dorms (pre COVID) due to small budgets. There are different criteria at play with Title IX, but yes $ is always going to be a huge factor as well for adding/dropping sports.

Women’s wrestling is here and growing strong, Iowa athletics Dept should be taking the lead. There is no better place for a women’s program to thrive.

Make no mistake these young lady’s are hard core, train extremely hard and want to be pushed.

If you are a wrestling fan and have not watched the Japanese women’s wrestlers along with our top women like Helen and Adeline. You are missing out on some extremely high level wrestling. We can all learn some techniques from the women from Japan.

Iowa should bring in one of these top US women as a coach, they should be the first BIG10 school and move forward with an all women’s team, it will pay dividends!

Careful some of the guy's on here might get their feelings hurt because you don't support the movement being pushed down your throat.

I used to play basketball and watched it often you idiotic clown. I like wrestling better.
ok, can see why a woman’s wrestling match would be so much more entertaining than a top ten mens basketball contest. however, I will refrain from name calling…lol.

It's not regulating speech to call a lame post a lame post. Writing a multi-paragraph post about how you don't care about adding a collegiate wrestling program because it happens to be a women's program is lame. If rider wants to denigrate a sport, he should be a big boy and not get fussy when people call him out. He can dish it out, but not take it apparently.

I didn't quote you...I quoted the other guy telling him he should "maybe not say anything" if he's just going to complain. Half this board's boards content is complaining about some sh*t.

I used soccer as an hypothetical example, not a reference. I lost interest in other sports years ago, except for a little Hawkeye football. :)
Narrow-minded? Maybe. I grew up with Hawkeye wrestling and football. Short-sighted? Hardly. This is a wrestling board, not a save college swimming or gymnastics board. Insulting my skills or lack thereof won't bring back swimming or gymnastics programs. You can practice all those skills yourself. You can also fund them too if you wish. It's a free country. Saving other college sports is someone else's fantasy, not mine. Making wrestling available to anyone who wants to try it is mine.

I am with you. Personally I can only stand watching a few women's sports. But anymore I only watch football and wrestling and then my kids sports. So maybe I am not the target audience?
I agree. Football and wrestling.

I'm among the group who has grown to be a bigger and bigger fan of women's wrestling in recent years, spurred largely by the addition of Miracle, Molinari, et al. to the HWC. I think addition of women's wrestling would be a great addition to Iowa's athletic program. We would be an instant draw for top level talent with the HWC and Iowa's history of excellence in wrestling. Additionally, I believe we would be one of the larger markets for women's merch adding some extra financial incentive to join the team. (I know I still rock my Kayla Miracle T regularly).

I'm not blind to some of the tension between adding women's programs when men's programs have just been cut. Until this Summer my son trained with the Eyas Gymnastics club which was run out of the Field House and coached by Doni Thompson, wife of JD Reive, former Iowa Men's Gymnastics coach. I saw the gut punch it was for the gymnasts, coaches and their families. My kiddo lost his club too. But that alone is not a reason to forgo adding this sport and in my opinion it would be a great fit for Hawkeye Sports.

Let's make this happen.

Not sure if this is behind the FloWrestling paywall but Andy Hamilton is strongly hinting that we’re about to have women’s wrestling at Iowa.

@smalls103 mentioned that Iowa will be making an announcement on Thursday.

I would imagine that it is about adding women's wrestling.

Well now you put the full court press on the blades sisters right? Elor and Welker as well. Iowa will be light weight U in men’s wrestling and heavier weight U of women’s wrestling.

The Blades sisters to usher in the new era, that would be awesome.

I don’t think they would adding solely based on this ,but it would help seeing as he has stated the fact he wants to go somewhere that is committIng to grow women’s wrestling.
Grip I don’t follow recruits like you guys...who are these siblings involved in this discussion?

They are talking about the Bouzakis family.

Nic is a sr. and top 5 pfp. He reportedly has Iowa in his(unofficial) school list and had mentioned in an interview that he wanted to go to a school that is involved in the advancement of women's wrestling(younger sister is a wrestler).

Also has a younger brother that is pretty good as well. I think is an 8th grader this year, or possibly freshman.
