Women's Team Coaching Candidates

a litttle off topic but if we are going there……you must mean like the wealthy Silicon valley tech individuals who are censoring others beliefs and funding the liberal left.
Sounds pretty consistent with First Amendment rights of private companies and capitalism to me (both of which sometimes annoy me too).

And don't kid yourself - 'both sides' do it all the time. I can help you find right business/media websites if you don't already have them bookmarked.

People act like there is someone out there with "Best Coach" stamped on their forehead. The reality is that there are probably a dozen highly qualified candidates, any one of which are likely to be highly successful. Some of that dozen are women, hire one of them.
If Terry Steiner wants the job you give it to him and don't think twice about it. He can wear a skirt at the presser and we'll just call it close enough.

If you make a list of the best wrestling coaches in America exactly zero of the top dozen would be female. Heck zero of the top 200 would be female.

This is an emerging sport. There have been very few high level women’s wrestlers in this country because it’s a new sport for women at the highest levels.

If they choose to hire a lesser qualified woman to lead the program I would disagree but totally understand and get behind that decision. There is a reason that many of the female candidates on many wish lists have zero coaching experience.

There are also a handful of female wrestlers that are more successful than most men will ever be.
Claiming that none of them are qualified or won't become qualified if given the opportunity is pretentious at best.

This is all about a women's team. Do you really think a bunch of high schoolers would rather wrestle for Terry Steiner over Maroulis, Adeline, or TMS?

I agree that a ton of women will become qualified for a position such as this. In 20 years it would be nice if most women’s teams are run by women and I believe that will be the case. Currently there are no such female candidates. That “view” isn’t pretentious. The women you mention have never coached. There is absolutely no way of knowing if they can coach. Some of the best wrestlers fail as coaches.

you make good points.....maybe they could pull something off like they did with Brands when he first became head coach at Iowa and Gable was his top assistant for a year or so to help guide him while he learned..... there’s more to being a head coach than coaching athletes on the mat.... what we think doesn’t matter though..... I trust that they’ll make a good hire and give them what they need to be successful..... I’d say good assistants are as important as the head coach too

LOL! I can answer that extremely difficult question in 2 seconds with 2 words. Geno Auriemma.

What about the Assistant Women’s National coach, Clarissa Chun? Is she “qualified”?

That's a bit of a stretch, buddy. Geno has been at Connecticut longer than most have been alive.
I think it's a fair bet that a large amount of female wrestlers don't know who Terry Steiner is, and even if they do, they don't look up to him as they do the other ladies I mentioned.

If you asked the average person if they recognize Geno vs Carl, they're going to say Geno nearly 100% of the time. When it comes to name recognition he smokes most coaches across the entire NCAA landscape.

I am guessing that most elite female wrestlers in this country know who he is and respect Steiner. Steiner has been a main stay in women's wrestling for a lot of years...has a huge footprint. One idea would be to have Chun take over USA wrestling and have Steiner/Gray come to IC. Get the program off the ground for few years and have Gray succeed him as coach.

By many metrics the answer would be a no. Look. I am not anti woman here. Clarissa would make a great head collegiate one day I am sure and as far as the women mentioned she is actually the only one that might have what it takes to lead this program from day one, but there is a reason that Dan Gable, Tom Brands, Carl Sanderson, etc., etc. all started out as collegiate assistant coaches before taking on the job of a head coach at a major university. There are so many responsibilities that come with a position like this. It’s not just teaching technique (which all mentioned would do really well at). It’s not just recruiting (which I believe most mentioned would do well at). It’s not just managing a staff of assistants. It’s not just lending your time for fundraising. It’s not just scheduling.

A position like this is more time consuming than your average CEO. The responsibilities involved are immense. That’s why every major program hires head coaches that are either established head coaches or at least have some time spent as assistants learning the job.

I personally love the idea of Lee Miracle as the HC and a couple of the big name female wrestlers that may be ending their competing in the next few years as his assistants. I haven’t seen anyone on the list start a women’s wrestling program from scratch and taking it to the top in a very short time except with the exception of Lee.

whatever they chose I will get behind but I don’t agree with posters who say this has to be a female hire. This is all new and because of that there really aren’t any female candidates that are qualified. That will change in a very short time now that Iowa is changing the landscape of women’s collegiate wrestling.

Head Coach Mark Perry and his assistant is Helen Maroulis. Let Helen get paid while training. Through in Adeline Gray as another assistant.

Thanks for expanding on your thoughts. On the flip side of your opinion, I don’t agree with posters who say this has to be a male hire.

Here’s an article discussing women coaches from last year that I found interesting: https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/December/16/Women-who-coach-college-womens-teams

Well it’s a good thing absolutely no one has said the hire must be a male.

There have really been two opinions on this. #1 we must hire a woman. #2 we must hire the most qualified

Well I believe as long as Brands is heavily involved in the decision we will end up with a great coach.

I’m throwing the “easy on the eyes” and the political nonsense that el dub threw up into the trash bin. I am guilty of my very criticism here, but let’s have a little faith. This didn’t sneak up on Gable or TNT. I suspect there’s a plan in palace that will serve wrestling, women, and U of I in a very positive way.

Terry would be the first call, and you don't make the second call until he says no.

After that I think it is Perry and Chun.

Perry obviously has ties to the university and has coached men and women and led the HWC and helped out with the Eastern Iowa wrestling club. He has young kids and it could be appealing to plant roots as a HC somewhere for a long period of time.

Chun would be a great candidate, but being from Hawaii and no apparent ties to Iowa whatsoever, not sure what her interest level would be.

Current womens US team members are probably not in scope, we need someone with coaching experience and history working the bureaucracy part of the job. They would make great head assistants, and I could see something like Steiner coming on for five years to get someone like Maroulis integrated into the program as a coach in waiting type of situation.

Exactly my thoughts. Kurdelmeier with a Gable in the wings scenario.

yeah, really. memory another one of your problems?
I was replying to a comment concerning the hiring of a coach for the female team. You remember… the one wanting to keep the American spirit alive by hiring the “best,” coach for the team?

It’s too bad that same “spirit” wasn’t in play for the last 400+ years.

Don’t mind me, I’m just scraping some of the white wash from our collective history. You know… some of the details they are too embarrassed to teach us in school..?

Had a nice chat with Clarissa Chun at the last HWC Artctic Plunge. She was in with some of her wrestlers who competed in the event at XStream Arena the same weekend. She and her athletes actually raised some money for the HWC and took the plunge, which was really cool. I mentioned the potential for an Iowa women's program and said she'd be a great coach. She seemed excited about the idea. I'm sure she's on the list, and I suspect she'd jump at the opportunity if given the chance. Just a hunch, but I bet she'd be all over it.

It’s a new opportunity and programs have to start somewhere. I have no problem with the idea of female coaches heading up teams and learning some things as they go.

It’s time…

Cael had zero tied to Penn State but he left his alma mater to go there and built a dynasty. Being the first P5 women’s wrestling coach is trailblazing stuff that most are going to jump at.

I get it, it's just the contrarian in me coming out maybe. I generally dislike anything having a mandate that the person hired has to be of a certain race, religion, or gender. Kind of defeats the American spirit IMO.

But I certainly can get the view point you are coming from.

Well the American spirit has pretty much been limited to white males, but sure I get what you are saying.
