Is anyone here somewhat connected to the womens program?

If so...any idea what weights they are planning on wrestling.

Most are pretty obvious...but then you realize there is serious log jams at the higher weights, very solid low...and then 123, 130, 136....what's happening there? Obviously Nanea is that mix...but at 130 or 136?

There are 28 wrestlers on the women's roster. I had thought that's a lot but then I looked at the men's roster, and there are 41. I guess that means some weight classes haven't been fully filled.

How do rankings work for Div I? There is only a few teams so are they lumped with all other divisions? I could not find any NCAA women rankings on flo.

D1, D2, and D3 all compete together.

I have not seen any recent rankings...but this was a p4p awhile back....it includes women wrestling at NAIA level.

Another article on Flo discussing where they all fit...many names that will compete for spots not mentioned

Same style article about last year's National Champ

You're not supposed to talk about a woman's weight.

This might be the only exception 😀

Though the funny thing is that it is real...I have watched alot of matches, saw a bunch of them live at the US Open...and I have to consciously tell me self it's OK to wonder what a 19 year old girl is going to weigh in February.

Senior rankings from June...we have wrestlers on here that will not even make the top 15 on the team for nationals this year.

That direct link I just realized is where two that were not able to be considered part of Iowa were ranked....Rose and Haley were still in high school. Very large gap between Rose at #5 and Amit Elor at #1

Here's my attempt to put together a starting lineup that gets the most talent on the mat:

101-Sterling Dias
109-Nyla Valencia
116-Ava Bayless
123-Felicity Taylor
130- ?????
136-Nanea Estrella
143- Tossup between Schmidt and Larramendy
155-tossup between Mir and Deede
170-Welker
191- Foeller

No idea if Taylor wants to move up, but I am trying to get Bayless in the lineup. I think that she is going to have a fantastic career. Lots of options for 130/136. Guessing Estrella will be 136 with a bunch battling for 130. Know there is a transfer or two on roster around this weight that have placed at previous schools, but no idea on the pecking order between them and the incoming class.

Even more fun is teams being able to send 15 to the Championships. Only one per weight can score team points, but Iowa could still get 15 AAs!

I'm going with the Gonzalez twins and the non-starters at 144 and 155 as 4 of the 5 who will compete at the Championships. If Taylor doesn't move to 123, give me Bayless as the 5th. If she does, then maybe Calkins at 191 or the 2nd in line for the 130/136 battle....

Nice problems to have when someone that finished 2nd at the Senior US Open is not in a projected lineup :)

I did a couple ideas while on a conference call awhile back....will have to find them.

You talking Cassioppi? I assumed a RS for her, but not sure if she will take one.

Nyla is out with injury this year I believe.

Have not seen an Iowa schedule...but it can somewhat be pieced together based on other team's released schedule.

My understanding is Iowa isn't going to have much of a home schedule this year. Not sure I entirely get the explanation but that is what I was told a couple weeks ago. To be fair, at that time they were still trying to get more meets. You would think teams would love to come to Carver and wrestle in front of big crowd and it's not like football where giving up a home game costs you a lot of money. Like I said, I don't get it.

Where Nanea and Bella fit in weight wise will be the dynamic of this roster
.
If Nanea can go 130 and Bella can go 143- which both seem unlikely - that would give Iowa a serious preseason look at 8 titles.

101 Dias or Brianna
109 Emilie or Bayless
116 Taylor
130 Estrella
143 Mir
155 Deede
170 Welker
191 Foeller

If the most unlikely thing happened and Taylor went 123 - that would add in another title contender with Bayless at 116 and Taylor at 123....but I think both are good where they most likely are.

I have not seen enough of Calkins to know how she has developed - if she has had any improvement she would be contender at 191.

I would think almost all the Freshman would have to Red Shirt - Haley and Cass have great accomplishments over the last year, but where would they fit in this year with Mir, Deede, Welker, Foeller, and Calkins all in the same weight area.

White would seem a likely Redshirt.

If Mir goes to 155 - going to be interesting to see how that plays out.

123 to 143 is where it is going to be interesting.,

Put in Alexandra Baudhuin is going to be in the running - and if anywhere near the top 15 probably needs to be on the team going to Nationals. Her last year and experienced with as a two time All American.

Should be Sierra Brown Ton's last year also - don't think either her or Baudhuin transferred for the last year to be room girls. They still have to earn it - but does gives us experience in the middle weights that do not look as clear as the others.

Emmily Patnuead is listed as a senior on the Iowa roster - but I believe she has two years left. Another transfer All-American that is probably going to be in the mix.

Anayka Besco is listed at 143 on the roster and another transfer - her last wrestling has been around 150. Another one in the mix - not a bunch of results over the last few years. Has solid results in the past - has beaten Faith Cole a couple of times.

Esther Han - one that I am not going to pretend to know anything - not really anything out there after High School.

Bunch of Freshman in the 123 to 143 range - Ava Rose, Cali Leng, Emily Frost, Lilly Luft, Bella Ngo, and Danni Swihart. Would expect most of them to Redshirt - depending on what goes on with the other Womens weight choices.

Left Nyla off based on the given info - sucks for her I would have listed her as a contender at 109.

....there thats the best I can do with no real info on where they are going to wrestle.

Should mention for those that do no realize it.

There is a lot of College age women that are damn good that went other routes - a lot go to Mark Perry..all of these are with him in Arizona

Audrey Jimenez would dominate 109...and she should be a high school senior, though I read she was graduating a year early to focus on the Olympics, not sure if that happened or not.

Amit Elor is 19 and would destroy 155.

Kennedy Blades seems to have taken a slight step ahead of Welker - though they might be the two best pound for pound for their age - just at the same weight.
