Worlds in Oslo

Ok guys, Daton just got a 35 second tech in the semis.

I think it is time we need to start talking asterisk for these world championships that happen same year as Olympics.

Slept thru my 330 alarm but caught end of the first session. US looking good. Hope
To see a replay of Gwiz match to see what happened. Sounds like he got handled.

Every time the guy got an underhook, Gwiz was completely helpless. Either got backed right off the mat or taken down.

How many 2020 Olympic medalists even showed up?

At least 8 with Gilman, Dake and 2 at 86, 97 and 125. Love seeing Team USA kick ass!
Take out the US and it’s like 3 or 4 and only 1 from the best country in the world.

Yianni will probably win gold too with no Bajrang, Otoguru, Aliev, Rashidov. Basically none of the good wrestlers.

If Fix wins gold he’ll have beaten the number one 61kg guy in the world. No asterisk needed.
If he does it next year we can say that. This year we don’t even know who the best 61kg guys are. Most of them wrestled 65 or 57 at Olympics and then didn’t come to this tournament.

65 is definitely a weakened bracket. 61 is a non Olympic weight so naturally a little weaker, but a world medal (finalist especially) is fantastic regardless. If fix was an Iowa guy nobody here would be trying to discount the achievement.

Harutunyan, who Fix teched in :30 is not exactly a scrub. Olympian and 2x JR World Bronze.
He's fine, but idk why we have to go back and forth about this in the first place. He went 0-1 at the Olympics.

The reality is that this world's is watered down and he's at a non-olympic weight which is already typically weaker. The world championships are never easy, but it would be concerning if Daton didn't have a good showing in a bracket this weak. He's doing what he should be doing. If he beats the Russian tomorrow, that's really something to get excited over.

smashing (41-0) your way to World finals shouldn't make you yawn. i don't care what the field is. it's the WORLD and there are good guys everywhere.

and 2x JR World Bronzes don't grown on trees. there's a long line of great american wrestlers that never medaled in JR's (Burroughs/Dake/Taylor). heck Gable dnp'd one year and Snyder was bronze one year.

the guy that Daton wrestled second was 5th at the Olympics. and the scrub 2x JR Bronze beat that same guy to earn his place at the OLY.

i mean, to each his own, i'm sure i'm not gonna change your mind, but Vangelov, Harutunyan, Lomtadze, Ravinder (all in daton's half) and Amoudzakhalil, Tumenbileg, Hasegawa - have all wrestled for World medals.

it's no walk in the park.

Magomedov - JR World Champ, Yarygin Champ
Vangelov - OLY 5th, Dogu Champ
Harutunyan - Euro SR Gold (in a bracket w/ Idrisov)
Lomtadze - SR World Silver (lost to Harunyan in Euro finals)
Hasegawa - U23 World Gold
Tumenbileg - SR World Silver
Amoudz - JR World Champ
Ravinder - JR World Silver (lost to Amoudz)

What point are you trying to make? Have there been asterisks any other Olympic year? No? Then, why are you unhappy the US is doing well? Are you Russian?

For those of you who think wrestling at Worlds means something, not for you sourpusses...

Gwiz wins in repechage, will wrestle for bronze.
Gilman pins the Russian, then techs.
JB techs for his 200th win. Then, gets a no-show win.
J'Den techs.
Yianni loses to Armenia.

Willie, we get these guys are good, and no one is yawning about Fix. He looks great and is absolutely destroying.

The point being made isn’t even just about Daton. It’s about several of the guys (Gilman, Dake, Yianni). Of course there are still good guys in these brackets, but the simple fact is there aren’t the best guys. To be a world champion you should be beating the best, not just the good. The undeniable fact is that for many weights, multiple of the best wrestlers are not in them.

57 - Outside of Gilman, none of the top 6 guys are here. I didn’t look any further down the rankings because who cares.
65 - None of the top 4
74 - Only Dake in the top 4
86 - this one legit
97 - legit
Hvy - legit

The non-Olympic weights are harder to judge because they’re always weaker, and especially in an Olympic year where many of the guys who would be at these weights went somewhere else for the Olympics.

Here is a question for you, should Dake get ranked #1 in the world for winning this tournament?

I like how it is watered down. That is laughable. They cut the weights down to 6 and made it crazy almost impossible to make a team and win a medal and now that it is back at 10 weights- it is watered down. This is how it has been for a long time. let the guys have their moment and feel good about their accomplishments.

So, this is all about sour grapes from 40 years ago, that you weren't good enough to AA?
Lol. No sour grapes on my part. The poster asked about NCAAs and I answered. The answer is if I were an NCAA AA in that scenario Id put an asterisk next to my name.

Me thinks 2 things can be true at once. If you are even there, and especially if you are dominating, you are a damn good wrestler. But in some weights/years, it can also be a *relatively weak* field and your wins are less impressive even if the trophy has no asterisk. Not rocket science here, I call stalemate. Both sides get a trophy, even though the field (cesspool) was weak.

crabs -

the world is a big place. and the world brackets are always referential. i rant about it all the time. the concentration to 6 wts for the olympics not only screws up things for that 1 year, it basically effects the entire cycle, and totally begets this perception that non-oly years/wts are 'weak'.

the brackets are still LOADED with talent. but if the olympics went to 3 weights you'd say worlds with six weights were 'watered down'.

i mean, it's undoubtedly true - when brackets are squeezed into 16-man, 6 weight formats it's gonna be more exclusive. and frankly, idk if that even means 'better'. watch - some of those oly medalists will be done or will never be the same again.

anyways - i guess the line that struck me was (paraphrasing) 'daton is doing what he's supposed to do.'

daton is a younger guy who never sniffed a SR world medal before. there are a dozen guys in the bracket as good or better credentials. and daton isn't just winning, he's eviscerating the field.

i got in a twitter beef last fall (when ivies canceled) defending Eierman when some cornell clown said jaydin was gonna win a title and it would be hollow b/c yianni wasn't there. the country still has a ton of talent and you still have to get it done.

anyway. end rant. i get what you're saying, i just think it's overblown a bit (and not just by you but by a fairly good portion of knowledgable wrestling fans).

and just to note - hope i'm not coming off as confrontational or as a know-it-all here. i genuinely enjoy the debate and back-and-forth.

I get your point Crabby but I remember when they tried to downplay Gilman’s silver medal run in 2017. All the guy’s weren’t there or easy path to the finals (even though nobody picked him to medal). Other countries sent who they sent…10 years from now, a champ is a champ.

Solid showing from Fix. Russian was just better. Hope he stays up at 61. Looks much better.

good bounce back from Dake. Top 3 weren't there, but Salkazanov is legit.
