If Leif Schroeder is beating Reyna, I’m fairly confident Rathjen will be starting at 157. Schroeder had been competing at 141. I thought 157 could’ve gone either way between Reyna and Rathjen, apparently not. Excited to see Rathjen hopefully solidify himself, he’s a tough kid.

Unless Reyna moved down to 49. Also have to factor in Cobe at 57 plus plus maybe Riggins.

Cobe and Rathjen are both scrappy fighters along with Riggins. I can’t say I’m disappointed, Reyna has not shown the ability to be the starter at 157. I hope one or two of these other guys will surprise us this year with how they have progressed these last few years.

Bigger question in my mind right now based on what's going on with Jack Wagner and Kyle Burwick is if Teske is even eligible. There has been no indications he is not but if Burwick is being told he cannot wrestle simply because he entered the portal after the May 1 cutoff, where does that leave Teske? He entered the portal in July. Why would UNI hold up Wagner's transfer (if it is UNI holding it up) but not Teske? Weird stuff happening in the NCAA right now.

I think Teske‘s situation is different because he graduated from UNI this summer. When he announced his transfer decision, he emphasized how he worked hard this summer to graduate.

Real entertaining stuff between Cobe and Rathjen. Lots of good scrambles. It was 1-0 Cobe (Rathjen took neutral in the third). Rathjen shot in with 20 secs left, got outscrambled and put on his back. Final score was 7-1.

Thanks for the updates Chief, keep them coming!

Cobe may be like Grothus--dangerous enough in a scramble to put anyone on their back. That's not a bad 157-pound strategy for 2023.

Question: has anyone ever actually seen Grothus and Siebrecht in the same room together? You know, with recent advances in plastic surgery...

My old buddy Kennevan was there but he doesn't know any of the wrestlers, so he wasn't much help :) He said Teske looked great, and Assad couldn't finish his shots. But he didn't know who they were wrestling. And he may have been referring to live goes, not wrestle-offs.

One match today?
Nah, that was just the funnest and perhaps the biggest affecting the starting lineup. Cobe looked bigger but they are both evenly matched except for Rathjen not wanting to choose down which tells me that he is confident on his feet and Cobe is tough on top.. Both guys had shots where they had the other dead to rights and they got out with some good scrambling. I thought Rathjen was going to get the TD at the end but Cobe wrestled through it put Rathjen on his back at the end. They'll put out the scores here pretty soon but nothing earth shattering or surprising.

I thought Chief was pulling our leg but maybe not.

Either way, the complaints about 157 on here all season are going to be absolutely excruciating.
I think most people know what to expect from 157 this year.

I’m probably higher on Cobe than most, I love his work ethic and his unorthodox wrestling. The kid loves the mat. I think he will surprise us a few times, but there will also be a few head scratching moves that lead to him giving up points. Hopefully he’s moving his feet a little better now, but I haven’t got to see him live in a few months.
