Iowa / Stanford updates

I'm not worried at 33...Drake has to learn not to shoot into another guy's wheelhouse and that kid is a vary good scrambler. For example, look at how Teemer wrestled their 157...kid is a big move guy and not afraid to pull the trigger at all. Teemer stayed away and got in where he could completely finish. Same thing at 65...I think we spent too much time up high giving away body locks. Garvin is as tough as they come in the first period.

At 141, Valencia is a killer...just finishes and stays in great position. Also is a guy that translates in both styles. I think he'll finish high this year. I think once Block learns to use his length, he'll be ok.

At 174, Brands needs to sh*t or get off the pot. I also think their 174 is a guy that will surprise a few folks but yea...Can't be doing the zombie walk in the last 10 secs trying to score.
Exactly what I thought on the 3 losses. Everyone else looked good to really good for meet two of the season. I think SS decides 174 between NB and PK and Gabe stays at 184 with AF redshirting. Time will tell. I don't see any way you don't keep Gabe in the lineup right now.

Rift between Big Game, Carew, Garvin’s family and the Brands. He wasn’t coming here Plus kid wanted a Stanford education.
I don't blame him but it still sucks to have kids from Iowa City go AA elsewhere. In the end I'll take Caliendo anyway, though after how 133 and 141 went it was a pretty discouraging first period.

Yep, Drake lost to Brandon Kaylor early last year and then went on to make the ncaa finals. He will be fine. At 141 I think Valencia is a legit title contender if he goes this year. I would put him in tier 2 right out of the gate but his senior level freestyle results are impressive! If this is the version of Brands we continue to see I’m sure that he will be supplanted by PK.

As for Nelson Brands, he's looking very much like a guy whose goal is not to cap his career by winning an NCAA title, but to coast comfortably into another top-6 finish while enjoying his new marriage and grad school. Not only has he not improved since two years ago, he has lost a step. It's actually hard to tell how many steps he's lost, because he has barely taken a shot.

I know many of you are on the "wait-and-see-give-him-a-chance-it's-still-early" train. Personally, I'm on the "you're-a-seventh-year-senior-in-a-competitive-weight-class-who-has-looked-like-crap-for-your-first-two-matches-of-the-season-and-you-should-be-benched-in-favor-of-Kennedy" train. And I don't think I'm getting off that train unless maybe he majors Kennedy at Soldier Salute. But you're welcome to stay on the train that suits you.
Nelson is what he is. Not many fans in CHA were surprised by what they saw today and nobody wants to watch that all season.

I would love to see PK against ISU in two weeks and then maybe this weight is decided H2H at the Salute. If Arnold is struggling with the cut to 84 then this seems like a very likely scenario (can Angelo fill out and be a 97 next year?) I'd take Mikey, PK, Arnold, Angelo and BK for our back half a year from now.

I don’t think h2h is necessarily the right way to decide the spot in this case. I’d rather see how they compete against other opponents.

Anyone can tell me I'm wrong but I don't think PK gets a fair shake at the spot unless he beats Nelson Brands H2H at the Salute. Maybe it would be different if his name was Nelson Anderson, but it's not, so I think a H2H win is an absolute must for PK.

Brands has had 14 minutes to get a td this season. I say we roll pk out next week and compare the difference.

Best three consecutive weights on the Hawks this year?

149-157-165 or 184-197-Hwt?
Give me my boy Mikey. Love his attack mindset. When he was down two scores I tapped my slightly worried buddy on the shoulder and said this one ain’t over. Cali has no chill. Wish all Iowa wrestlers were as athletic and offensively minded as MC65.

I meant all I said above but this was really an exercise to see how many nicknames I could give Caliendo. I figured three would be the tipping point for a tongue lashing from our resident grump spooner.

The frustrating part of NB’s shots is how quickly he got flattened out. At the end with 10 seconds left he just gave up his grip. He doesn’t look as strong.
Its early things will work out the way there suppose to.

You may be right, but I don’t care if they can beat each other. I’m more interested in whether they can beat the competition.

we should see PK at 174 for ISU for the sole fact he can bonus riggins and nelson has zero shot at that.

I think Riggin's days as a starter are limited.
It's going to be Gaitan or Naak, imo.
Riggins should be at Wartburg.

Nelson Brands spends so much time on the heavy collar tie doing not much with it, feet as still as can be.

Gets in two or three shots and gets stuck. I can hear Ironside yelling "get up pick it up" in my head every time I see a hawkeye get stymied on a leg attack like that.

But Norman is no joke, kudos to him

Yup...kudos to Stanford. They came in to both duals ready to wrestle and they have some talent over there. I think Garvin will round into form by NCAAs plus they'll have stiffer competition in the ACC. With that match, we can't constantly complain that our guys close themselves down and then when Caliendo wrestles wide open and gets some points scored against him, then we collectively hold our noses. Caliendo learned a lot today when normally he doesn't see a guy like Garvin until NCAAs. I am also glad to see us not reflexively choosing down although for some of the younger guys, I think it does them good because they might need that point down the road in a close match.

If anyone knows who the idiots are who continue to do the "whooooo" thing during HWT match please please please tell them to stop. They sound like complete morons, they make Iowa look like complete morons. Seriously.

It's usually just kids. Plus they are doing the Ric Flair Whoo wrong anyways.

Its like "the wave" that goes around the stadium to me. Let it go already.
(Not the wave to the kids, that's awesome.)

Lately, I’ve been afraid Ironside is going to stroke out from the effects of bad calls and dumb moves on the mat.

Norman is no joke.

Was he that hyped? He wasn’t considered a blue chipper and his true freshman season wasn’t very strong.
Hyped by Clone fans!

Where have you been?
And as an aside...his lil brother was the kid that made an ass of himself at the high school tourney recently.

I think Drake will be fine too, but I was a bit surprised at how easy it was for Stanford to get to his legs. He didn't try to sprawl a single time. Drake let him to his legs and then tried to scramble out of it and it didn't work.

Norman will AA IMO and last week’s opponent is no slouch, but for someone of Nelson’s skills and power to have no offense in 2 consecutive matches against 2nd and 3rd tier opponents is inexcusable. He was somewhere between 4th and 7th in the polls, and one of the guys from FLO even picked Nelson to make the finals at 74. As Tom says “he’s got work to do.” Going forward I wouldn’t mind seeing what our other options are and who’s hungry.

As others have said I’m ok with Drake’s loss; he knows how to come back. And I like what I see from the other weights-what I expected to see.

Though I didn’t expect all the offense from Parco and Buchanan. Love it!! Love seeing the SL tilts!!

nelson had 1 bonus point win (gaitan) during his AA season. agree that pk has a better chance to get the major.

that being said I will be surprised if we don’t see nelson against isu
