Yesterday, I drove through Nebraska

My sympathies. As we were flying over Nebraska I thought to myself, "Man am I glad that we are taking 45 minutes to fly over Nebraska and not taking 8 hours to drive across it." It is a lot cooler from the air. You can actually see the sandhills and there are lots of perfect circles from all of the irrigation.

Nebraska is very boring when driving through on I-80...but if you ever have a chance to see the very northern tier of Nebraska it is really quite beautiful up there.

Perfect State to start one of those audio books. Really engulf yourself in the story as there are no really sudden turns in the road.

I always get a kick out of Nebraska and Iowa fans talking trash on the other state/people. In reality, both states and people are pretty alike. Come on now, driving through Iowa on I-80 the scenery is pretty similar to what you'll see going through Nebraska.

True, but I'd say a main difference is at least you'll see a city every two hours, whereas Neb. Is eight straight hours of bore.

This is sort of true, however; the nicest part of Nebby is the Eastern side, while the worst part of Iowa is the Western side. The further you get from Nebby the better it gets

I traveled Nebraska years ago and always carried my shotgun, fishing pole and golf clubs.

Go hunting and decent fishing out west. Golf in the east because they had sand greens out west.

A lot of those small towns had good steak places though.

You are correct, it is really flat. You don't want to be on 80 when it's snowing and the wind comes up Blizzard City!

I flew to LA from DC on Thursday night, and the whole country was clear of clouds. I had a map in front of me on the plane that tracked our progress, and I believe we were over omaha where I saw a fireworks display over the river (can anyone confirm?). It amazed me just how many lights there were across the country, as I assumed there would be large areas of darkness, which was true over the rockies and until about Las Vegas (which looked like a circus from the sky).

One of the more interesting cross country flights I've had, as I never take a window seat by choice (hate making people get up for me to pee), and it's rare there's barely a cloud in the sky for such a long distance.

Anyway, the view was a welcome distraction, as the 2 semifinal games I was watching on the flight were both duds...

Why does Nebraska have gates at every on/off ramp, that they can close to close I-80, and Iowa doesnt? It can get significantly worse in Nebraska?

Remember that Interstates are always placed in the easiest places to build which means flat and straight. People say that Iowa is boring traveling on I-80, and it is, but that's because you're on a boring stretch of road. Interstates are not don't take you through the pretty parts of states generally.

I would argue that Highway 3 from Cherokee to the East and Highway 20 from south of Storm Lake to the East are much more boring that I80.

General Custer said, "Men, I have good news and bad news. The bad news: We're surrounded by forces vastly superior to ours, and we're all about to die. But the good news: At least we don't have to go back through Nebraska."

I've driven Hwy 20 across the state numerous times and it is terrible. Not the entire thing but once you're past Cedar Falls heading West it's brutal. Lack of scenery makes for a boring ride.

West of Lincoln ain't for you yuppie boys, that's for sure. We breed the likes of Drew Ott, so you should be thanking us.

It is pretty desolate but I kind of like that. The only other place that has equated in my book is from Albuquerque to Flagstaff.

Love the newer planes with the GPS screens.

It makes it a lot of fun when the the skies are clear and especially during the day time.

They will close the interstate when the winds/storms/snow, etc get too bad. You don't want to be on I-80 out there in a snowstorm!!

I live here in Corning but am from Nebraska and agree that drive sucks. We just had the Ragbria bikes swing thru Monday(great people).I could not imagine them enjoying a bike-ride across Big Red country once they got west of Lincoln.lol

I have a business associate that lives in grand island. He went to Indiana about a week ago - and he kept talking in amazement about the fact that he had never seen so many trees ! OMFG
