You’re nine and your mom or dad come home and tell you that you’re going out to dinner at _______

Long John Silvers. I need to eat up those crunchies.

The Moose Lodge in Davenport. I think it was French Fried Lobster with the melted butter. So good

Happy Joes Pizza for me as well! They had a little window looking into the kitchen so you could watch them make the pizza and they had a candy store built right into the restaurant!!!

I would have to say Happy Joes also. The window to watch them make pizzas, the best arcade selection and the ice cream sundaes were incredible.

The White Springs in McGregor. Pinball; pizza burger, relish tray for black olives on your fingertips; PBR clock with flipping number cards for each minute; a hole in the kitchen wall where a hand would shoot out to grab the pay phone when it rang; skins-on fries; coke on ice; play on the gravel pile in the parking lot while dad pays.

At that age this place

As I recall it was along the highway that ran east to west on the north side of Waterloo and Cedar Falls near the border of the two cities. Amazing onion rings, but I loved it all as a kid.

No way my parents ever went out for dinner. Waste of money.

A couple of times I remember Henry’s Hamburgers had a ten for a dollar special and they picked up a couple bags and froze them. Nasty.
Same. We got McDonald’s every now and then and on special occasions my grandparents treated us to the Piccadilly Cafeteria at the mall (loved that place).

Otherwise it was home cooking for this kid.

When I was 9, we were going to Scarpinos, Johnny and Kays, or maybe the Vets Club.

You stole mine. 9 times out of 10 the order was hamburger steak with American fries.

and you’re super excited! Where are they taking you?

A&W
Loved the onion rings and obviously the root beer.
I was 9 in 1969 and A&W was our go to family night out. Car hops and I probably ordered a plain hot dog plus a chocolate malt. Then fell asleep in the rear window on the way home except for the time I spilled my malt in the back speakers of our 1967 Chevy.

When I was little and my Dad would come into town we’d get dressed up and go to basque restaurant. The usual Friday night was Mexicali, which used to be the best Cali-mex in Bakersfield

Definitely Carlos O'Kelly's. Cheese and Onion Enchiladas with Extra Cheese sauce and virgin daiquiris. I knew I would have the squirts when I got home, but I didn't care.
