Their coney dogs were the best, evah!At that age this place
As I recall it was along the highway that ran east to west on the north side of Waterloo and Cedar Falls near the border of the two cities. Amazing onion rings, but I loved it all as a kid.
The Iris in Mount Pleasant. Now closed.and you’re super excited! Where are they taking you?
A&W
Loved the onion rings and obviously the root beer.
Wow! Are you royalty or something?Bishops Cafeteria...
...literally anywhere. My father was the cheapest bastard that ever walked the earth. My older siblings and I to this day will talk about how we as a family ate out a grand total of THREE times during our collective childhoods. We had plenty of money...but my dad paid the mortgage, and that was IT. So, my mom worked 3 jobs just to keep us kids fed and clothed.
When my older brother and sister began working, they and my mom worked at a steak restaurant in CR, best one in town at the time - nights obviously. She knew I would be home effectively alone because my dad sure's hell wasn't cooking anything for me (interrupted his bourbon dinner). So now and then I'd find a $5 bill on my dresser with a note telling me to grab something at the local chicken shop (it was a Famous Recipe store...sort of a KFC knockoff - GREAT chicken) or the McDonalds or Sandy's (became a Hardee's eventually, then a Zio Johno's) along 7th Avenue in Marion.
The catch was, don't bring it home with you. Eat it all before you come back home. Because, well...you all can figure out why.
THOSE meals were what I truly remember the most - because they were so seldom to be had - and what they represented as far as "family dynamics" were concerned.
The first time I ever ate pizza from a pizza restaurant (not home made), I bought myself when I began working at age 15 with my very first paycheck. I remember walking home from work that afternoon, cashing the check at an Eagles grocery store in Lindale Mall, then walking to Naso's on 7th Avenue in Marion (which was about a block from our house).
That was the very first item I ever bought with my own money. I remember walking into my house, my dad is sitting in The Dad Chair...
"Whatchya got there, pizza?"
"Yep". And I kept on walking to my room. Still the best pizza I've ever eaten.
When were you a kid? This was Dubai in 1990,I was rich and lived in Dubai. We had servants, cooks and basically went out every night to dinner so who knows. Middle East is whacky for the rich.
Wow. They must've known you by name at Happy Joe's.I was rich and lived in Dubai. We had servants, cooks and basically went out every night to dinner so who knows. Middle East is whacky for the rich.
Jerry’s Pizza. I miss it alot. I ate at that Mexican place once. We liked El Zarape’s in FM.The Pizza Hut in Mt Pleasant brings back memories.
My favorite place was Uncle Bills Mexican restaurant in Crawfordsville.
I was going to say The Cardinal, but really that might have only been for ice cream. In reality Mom probably made 99% of our suppers with Dad occasionally bringing home KFC from Dubuque, or maybe Leroy's Pizza.Leiser's Supper Club in Sageville, IA
Avalon Supper Club in Rickardsville, IA
"The Cardinal" in Dyersville, IA
Brunch/lunch after church: Kerrigan's, Dubuque, IA
Late night/after ball games: "The Bobcat" in Epworth, IA
Bonanza
So you grew up rich?Carlos O’Kelly’s for mexican, Shakey’s or Leonardo’s for pizza, and we’d hit Red Lobster or a local steakhouse for steak.
I forgot to add Dad's carry-outs: Broasted chicken from Eichman's in Sageville or "Little Ed's" in Rickardsville.I was going to say The Cardinal, but really that might have only been for ice cream. In reality Mom probably made 99% of our suppers with Dad occasionally bringing home KFC from Dubuque, or maybe Leroy's Pizza.
For some reason, our HS football team got to eat there once or twice every season. No idea who paid for it, but we were encouraged to eat as much as we wanted.
Didn't you serve me once? Quit sticking gerbils up your ass.Wow. They must've known you by name at Happy Joe's.
Yes that is indeed Dubai. But you've only selected one road. Suburbs like Deira were plenty developed as was Al Karama. I used to fly kites on that road (the one in your photo), Sheikh Zayed road, which now is a main drag. When were you a kid? This was Dubai in 1990,

Another vote for Happy Joes. Happy Joes taco and taco supreme pizzas > anything else
Just so you know, in the 80s, Godfathers blew away Happy Joe's. I knew a guy who found a maggot infested cherry tomato on a Happy Joe's pizza. Skip.Wow. They must've known you by name at Happy Joe's.
