Pizza Hut or Burger King! A favorite memory of mine as a kid was going grocery shopping at Econo foods in Waterloo then hitting BK up then heading home to watch TGIF. The good ole days

...literally anywhere. My father was the cheapest bastard that ever walked the earth. My older siblings and I to this day will talk about how we as a family ate out a grand total of THREE times during our collective childhoods. We had plenty of money...but my dad paid the mortgage, and that was IT. So, my mom worked 3 jobs just to keep us kids fed and clothed.

When my older brother and sister began working, they and my mom worked at a steak restaurant in CR, best one in town at the time - nights obviously. She knew I would be home effectively alone because my dad sure's hell wasn't cooking anything for me (interrupted his bourbon dinner). So now and then I'd find a $5 bill on my dresser with a note telling me to grab something at the local chicken shop (it was a Famous Recipe store...sort of a KFC knockoff - GREAT chicken) or the McDonalds or Sandy's (became a Hardee's eventually, then a Zio Johno's) along 7th Avenue in Marion.

The catch was, don't bring it home with you. Eat it all before you come back home. Because, well...you all can figure out why.

THOSE meals were what I truly remember the most - because they were so seldom to be had - and what they represented as far as "family dynamics" were concerned.

The first time I ever ate pizza from a pizza restaurant (not home made), I bought myself when I began working at age 15 with my very first paycheck. I remember walking home from work that afternoon, cashing the check at an Eagles grocery store in Lindale Mall, then walking to Naso's on 7th Avenue in Marion (which was about a block from our house).

That was the very first item I ever bought with my own money. I remember walking into my house, my dad is sitting in The Dad Chair...

"Whatchya got there, pizza?"

"Yep". And I kept on walking to my room. Still the best pizza I've ever eaten.

A&W in the Sycamore Mall in IC was a treat at lunch for us. Mom always made it a big deal because we were poors. I loved that place. Big booths, and it was super dark in there. It made it seem cooler.
Now, when dad didn't piss away his check, and it was a super special night, we'd go to the Towncrest Inn on the East Side. I think that was the name of it. The building is still there, but the restaurant is long gone. Dad would get a steak and a couple of gin and tonics. Mom would sit there and fret over the money.

The Pizza Hut in Mt Pleasant brings back memories.

My favorite place was Uncle Bills Mexican restaurant in Crawfordsville.
Jerry’s Pizza. I miss it alot. I ate at that Mexican place once. We liked El Zarape’s in FM.

I was going to say The Cardinal, but really that might have only been for ice cream. In reality Mom probably made 99% of our suppers with Dad occasionally bringing home KFC from Dubuque, or maybe Leroy's Pizza.

I forgot to add Dad's carry-outs: Broasted chicken from Eichman's in Sageville or "Little Ed's" in Rickardsville.

For some reason, our HS football team got to eat there once or twice every season. No idea who paid for it, but we were encouraged to eat as much as we wanted.

I think we actually ate at a QC location after beating up on Dav. West.

When were you a kid? This was Dubai in 1990,

Yes that is indeed Dubai. But you've only selected one road. Suburbs like Deira were plenty developed as was Al Karama. I used to fly kites on that road (the one in your photo), Sheikh Zayed road, which now is a main drag.

No way to pick just one. A&W and Lil Duffer and Dutch Oven Pizza in Pella. Ponderosa and Shakey’s and Happy Joe’s in Osky.
