You only get one. So make the tough choice.

This is not a desert island question. It's not asking for the movie you could most easily watch over and over again. Give us your best movie. And feel free to defend your choice.

I already stated my choice (and a few reasons) in the war movie thread, so here it is again to kick of this thread: The Deer Hunter.

It has superb acting and superb actors. It is an intelligent inquiry into humanity that transcends the war setting. And it is beautifully filmed. It's not an "easy" film, but it's nearly flawless. Even the parts you didn't particularly like turn out to be necessary to tell the story so well.

Robert De Niro
Meryl Streep
Christopher Walken
John Savage
John Cazale

Probably the most impressive thing Walken has ever done. Maybe Savage, too.

I'm not qualified to determine which was "best:" but...One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Favorite movie - favorite book

Godfather 2 - Family, crime, money, power, revenge, history, love, divorce ...

My Rushmore:

Godfather 2
Godfather
Almost Famous
City of God

I was flowing suit on the others that Rushmore'd, but I understand you perhaps upset that I did not comply to the layout of OP.

PS because we quoted in an earlier thread doesn't mean you need to quote me again.

My favorite movie is The Ten Commandments. Heston being Heston, great cast. I can watch it any time, anywhere.

What I think is the best movie of all time is Touch of Evil. Another Heston flick, but the surrounding cast is astounding and steals the movie. Even the bit part cast is superb.

The opening shot is one of the all time best in movie history - 3:20 with zero cuts! The car scene passing from street to street a bit into the movie, and the closing scene (ending with Welles getting shot by his partner, then Marlene Dietrich's "adios") are also fantastic.

Are you setting the ground rules? ;)

Boy, narrowing it down to one is tough. It's kind of a toss-up between a couple for me, but I'll have to go "Gone with the Wind" as the best movie of all time, in my opinion.

I'm surprised we're still allowed to like that movie. Thought it would have gotten the "Disney's Song of the South" treatment by now.

As mentioned, I am not qualified to determine the best. I can say that "Dr. Strangelove" is one of the best movies I have ever seen. A close 2nd for me would be "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" based on the cast and the plot.

Rashomon

Edit - Although I think Rashomon is his best, my favorite Kurosawa film is Yojimbo.

Good Will Hunting and it is not even close.

I gotta balance several factors- good music, makes me laugh, quotable, and has a deeper meaning than the subject matter and script will blatantly reveal...

It's really hard to go with a single movie to cover all eras and genres.....but I'll go with "The Philadelphia Story".
