Zakaria: Saying ‘radical Islam’ has nothing to do with defeating terrorism

That's the thing if someone said "i'm killing these people bc they hate star wars" no one would question their motivation. They might say they are mentally ill but they wouldn't question they actually believe it. However when someone of the Islamic faith says they are killing in the name of Islam it isn't mental illness nor the reason they are saying. Nope instead we ourselves place a separate motivation upon them bc we don't want to believe what they are saying bc it doesn't fit a certain narrative and it has a potential to create unrest.

ITS EFFING CRAZY. if they are proclaiming theses murders in the name of Allah or Islam then I believe they are being truthful thinking otherwise is being naïve.

Well it's obvious that they aren't killing in the name of Islam....

The two main reasons are:
Climate Change
Unemployment

The current strain of fundamentalism was started by an Egyptian who came to America and got shocked by all you decadent breeders in the 1950's.
Those who are interested should check out the BBC series "The Power of Nightmares." Available on YouTube and other places. Here's a link to the first episode:

Where are the Christian soldiers, going off to war?

Why aren't Christians lining up to enlist to fight against this false religion and its false prophet?

Are they cowards? Do they doubt theirs is the true religion?

Because they will wait until they are full on genocide ready. History keeps repeating itself.

Once again, it isn't Christianity vs Islam. It's the worlds inhabitants against ISIS.

It's amazing how you haven't figured that out.

No. Those on the right who insist on putting forward this silly and destructive argument are extremely dense and harmful to our country and people.

No, people like you and our incompetent POTUS are dangerous to our country. Can't defeat an enemy if you're unwilling to acknowledge who the enemy is.

Sure it is. But we don't bomb communities where Star Wars fans live just because there are those who kill and terrorize in the name of Star Wars.

This makes about as much sense as saying Obama is un-American because he didn't wear a flag lapel pin, or because he didn't put his hand over his heart during the national anthem.

This silly argument about saying the exactly right words reminds me of Tom Paxton's Bayonet Rap. Here's the relevant passage:

And now he taught us all the little jumps that you have to make; all the little John Wayne dance steps. You know. You saw Sands of Iwo Jima. All the, the High Thrust, and the Low Thrust, and my favorite, the Butt Smash, terrible thing. More importantly we learned that in this type of quarrel, finesse is not where it’s at. No no. It isn’t Douglas Fairbanks after all. What they’re looking for is something more on the order of brute ferocity. So whatever you do with the bayonet must be accompanied with sharp animal-like cries, along this line <sample ferocious yell>. This is to frighten your enemy. It isn’t enough, they figure, to run 200 yards across an open field and wave a bayonet in his face, you gotta yell at him too, right? I can see myself in a foxhole saying, “Oh my God! Here comes someone with a bayonet. What’ll I do if he yells at me?

I don't think that's what he's saying. Using the phrase doesn't mean we beat the terrorists all over the world.
Please provide a link to someone stating if we just call it what it is we will defeat terrorism? I don't recall anyone saying that.
Does anyone really believe isis is not a radical Islamic group? Really? Please identify yourself if so.

No, I doubt it, but there have been plenty of examples on this forum of people essentially seeking for Obama to say the magic words. What would happen if he said the words? Would the game plan change, and our path to victory be set? I know it seems like a weird thing for people to get hung up on.

I don't disagree with the point people are over obsessed with the "call it what it is" mantra. It's getting old and annoying. But I also haven't heard people say calling it what it is will defeat it like so many are spinning it here and elsewhere. That's a stupid and frankly disengenous argument, and many are using it as an excuse to admit there is a very real threat coming from a large group of savages.

where does daesh get the idea to behead people?

where does daesh get the idea to wage jihad?

where does daesh get the idea to treat women like property?

where does daesh get the idea to kill apostates?

where does daesh get the idea to kill muslims who aren't "muslim enough?"

where does daesh get the idea to kill jews?

and here come the obama lemmings to propogate his lies and bury themselves in his cozy comfortable delusions.

So, Obama won't say it and the GOP cares deeply about that and thinks he's wrong for that. And ciggy and others thinks they're wrong for thinking he's wrong. And swag and others thinks ciggy is wrong for thinking they're wrong for thinking Obama's wrong.

Is this topic that important either way?

Absolutely not. So why did the GOP make it up and beat it to death?

Well, duh. Of course Islam has nothing to do with terrorism. Just because ISIS used it in their name doesn't make it literally accurate. White Castle isn't an actual castle. Burger King isn't an actual monarchy. The Onion has nothing to do with produce. And ISIS isn't representative of Islam.
Westboro Baptist is not representative of Christians, but they do crappy things in the name of Christianity. ISIS is full of Koran believing muslims.

What should we do about radical Christian terrorists?

Lots and lots of evangelical preachers who are pretty vicious with their words and lectures. We droned Anwar al Awlaki for similar activity. Can we drone evangelists?

Vile words, disgusting signs and protests at wildly inappropriate places is not the same as mass killings, sex slavery, kidnapping for ransom, the selling/destruction of priceless antiquities and other horrors perpetrated by ISIS. It's not even comparable.

Did you check out the Power of Nightmares?
I did, most of it anyway. I took away a similar lesson as that I gleaned from the current Hawkeye season. The difference between success and failure; notoriety and obscurity is often razor thin and as dependant on luck and whims of fate as it is intentional planning and hard work.

Its also a consistent surprise how much hotter we get over external threats than we do internal ones that we might actually have more capacity to deal with. Ask people to change the sirens on a fire truck to protect hearing and that's completely unreasonable, but ask them to register all muslims in a database and that's common sense.

I decided to rewatch the first episode to see how good they really were on the facts and suppositions over a decade ago. Quite good, as it turns out.

yes, I believe isis is not a radical Islamic group. I believe they are the cia and they are doing things under the false flag of a radical Islamic group, to take our rights away eventually.
