Washington State has hired S. Dakota State's Jimmy Rogers to a 5-year deal. He'll average $1.57M/year

And to think it was not that long ago when Washington State was part of a power conference.

Too bad there was not a $2M cap on all college coaches.

Here we go again

Rutgers doing work against KSt. 34-17 in the 3rd.

Remember last bowl season when Rutgers manhandled Miami? NW beat Utah. Wisconsin gave LSU all they wanted.

All teams that Iowa beat. 2 away from Kinnick.

Of course those teams never had a pulse, though.

Such a disrespect to how hard it is to win at all at that level, let alone for pretty much over 20 years straight

* Official Dolphins @ Browns Game Day Thread *

The 7-8 Miami Dolphins travel to Cleveland to face the 3-12 Browns today at 4:05 eastern time on CBS.

Amazingly, the Dolphins are still not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, thanks to the Bengals' win.

To make the playoffs, Miami needs:

* Dolphins win vs Browns
* Dolphins win vs Jets
* Broncos lose vs Chiefs
* Colts lose vs Giants or Jaguars

Tua is listed as "doubtful" for the game.

Vegas has Miami at -3. The O/U is 32.5.

Weather Report: It's a winter heatwave in Cleveland! Temps will be in the upper 50s with light rain tapering off as the game progresses. But the winds will be 20-25 mph out of the south with higher gusts! Don't depend on the kicking game for this one!

Vacationing in Texas

Wife and I looking for some place here in the states to spend a week vacation in April. We did a week hiking in Utah, where we had never been, this last fall and it was great. Neither of us has ever been to Texas so we are thinking about exploring Texas. We frequent NYC, Philly and DC fairly often, so I’m thinking that Dallas and Houston may be similar big city vibes, which we don’t really want. Thought maybe 4 days in Austin catching the BBQ and music scene, then San Antonio for a couple days? Any recommendations for those areas?

THE SCOOP

Despite sharing a border, Iowa and Missouri almost never play one another in football (or most other sports, for that matter). The last Iowa-Missouri game? Also a bowl game -- the 2010 Insight Bowl, which was a 27-24 Iowa win thanks to a pick-six from Micah Hyde.

The last Iowa-Missouri game before that? A 5-0 Missouri win... in 1910.

Despite their close proximity, Iowa and Missouri rarely square off on the same field. So don't miss Monday's black-and-gold blow-off -- it might be a very long time until the next one takes place.

Iowa and Missouri enter this game off moderately disappointing seasons for each team; Missouri entered 2024 with raised hopes after knocking off Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl last year, while Iowa entertained visions of an improved offense and a run at the College Football Playoff. Instead, the Hawkeyes and Tigers combined to lose seven games over the fall and finished well outside the Playoff pecking order.

Their reward instead is a Monday afternoon game in Nashville. Bowl games have always hinged on motivation -- who wants to be there more? -- and increasingly they hinge on who is actually there. The transfer portal and the increased prevalence of opt-outs for the NFL Draft have made roster composition for bowl games something of a guessing game. Indeed, Iowa will be without Big Ten Running Back of the Year Kaleb Johnson for this game, while Missouri will be without leading receiver Luther Burden III (among others).

An FCS Powerhouse About to “Implode”

Spoke with a connection I have in the FCS about a powerhouse that’s supposedly about to — and I quote — “implode.” So, potentially some serious opportunity here for Iowa in the portal.

Hearing South Dakota State’s head coach is headed to Washington State. Probably going to bring a solid contingent of his staff and the roster with him.

Who knows how it all unfolds, but that could mean Iowa may have a shot at some pretty damn good SDSU players in the portal. No guarantees/names floating around or anything, but definitely something to keep tabs on.

Good train routes in the US?

Every year I visit my folks and some friends in Phoenix for a few weeks, typically anywhere from late Jan to Early May. Normally I fly but last year I made a road trip out of it and had a blast. This year I was half-kicking around the idea of taking a train (the Amtrak Southwest Chief) but most of my friends think I'm a crazy for tossing around the idea. Personally I think it would be a cool experience getting your own roommette (I'd fly back). The route would be from Galesburg to Flagstaff and then I'd rent a car and make the beautiful drive down from Flagstaff to Mesa. /csb

Anyone travel by train in the US anywhere? Good/bad times? Obviously Alaska but any contiguous US routes worth experiencing?

Federal government nears debt-ceiling limit, Yellen warns

The U.S. government has less than three weeks to raise its debt limit before it will need to take “extraordinary measures” to sustain federal operations, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said Friday.

In a letter to members of Congress, Yellen said the government is beginning to run out of money to finance its debt obligations, reflecting one of the challenges facing the incoming Trump administration.

Yellen’s letter stated that “extraordinary measures” are expected to be needed starting between Jan. 14 and Jan. 23, which is actually somewhat later than originally anticipated. Those measures would probably give Congress several months to act before hitting the borrowing limit.

“I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States,” Yellen wrote.
Congress tells the Treasury Department how much it can borrow, a limit known as the “debt ceiling.” Failing to lift the debt limit could have catastrophic consequences for the global economy, as the U.S. government has never before defaulted on its debt obligations.

President-elect Donald Trump tried to get congressional Republicans to suspend the debt limit for two years — or abolish it altogether — in negotiations over funding the government this month. That effort failed, however, and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) approved legislation to fund the government without changes to the debt limit.

President Joe Biden and former House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) agreed to suspend the debt limit for two years in a bipartisan deal in the spring of 2023.
Johnson could face a difficult time retaining his speakership while lifting the debt ceiling. If GOP leaders try to approve an increase without Democratic support, they would have the narrowest of margins in the House to do so without defections among their right flank. But cutting a deal with Democrats to lift or suspend the debt limit could infuriate the right, whose support Johnson needs to remain speaker.
