Our portal game is downright pathetic. Only team worse in the conf is Purdue. Our AD must get big corporate donors or add NIL fee to tickets.

We're striking out left and right while other Big Ten teams are on fire. Maybe it will take a 3-9 season next year to make that sink in. Without some significant additions via the portal at WR, OL, DL, DB, 3-9 is staring us right in the face.

Reasons for apparent lack of portal success so far?

What is the main factor in Iowa’s seeming lack of portal success so far?

  • Iowa is the Rosie O’Donnell of wet T-shirt contests

    Votes: 30 24.2%
  • Iowa doesn’t have enough NIL funds in the war chest

    Votes: 32 25.8%
  • Kirk is happy with the current roster and is only looking to add a few transfers now and spring

    Votes: 56 45.2%
  • OP’s mom was unwilling to put out to woo transfers

    Votes: 6 4.8%

I share the angst of a lot of fans.

With that said, I am curious if there is a positive spin to be had. In other words, is Iowa striking out because they’re the fat, ugly stepsister at the ball, or because they feel good about the guys coming up and are being very judicious and selective about whom they reach out to and how they spend their NIL funds (ostensibly to avoid another Proctor debacle)?

I don’t know. But I am curious what others think, or what rumors have circulated. I am of the belief that Kirk will never bring in a kid who isn’t a good fit regardless of talent and also believe Iowa is a tough sell given our offensive reputation and lack of productivity in the passing game. I am also guessing they are probably a little more stingy with NIL funds out of necessity.

Anyway, I look forward to reading responses to the poll and this thread. Thanks.

POLL: 25% Say God Wanted Trump To Be President
February 14, 2019 Donald Trump, Idiocracy

Fox News reports:

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a recent interview that she believes God wanted Donald Trump to become president. A quarter of voters agrees. A Fox News Poll released Wednesday finds 25 percent believe God wanted Trump to win the election. Sixty-two percent disagree and 14 are unsure.

Over half of white evangelical Christians, 55 percent, feel God put Trump in office. That drops to 36 percent among Protestants and 20 percent among Catholics. Trump voters are nearly six times as likely as Clinton voters to believe God wanted Trump to win the election (46 vs. 8 percent).

This was a standard telephone poll of registered voters, not of just Fox News viewers.

Jodi Huisentruit went missing in 1995. Friend hopes a $25K reward uncovers her remains

Nearly 28 years after Jodi Huisentruit's disappearance, a $25,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the recovery of the remains of the former Mason City morning television news anchor, according to a news release.

Huisentruit disappeared early on the morning of June 27, 1995, on her way to work at KIMT-TV in Mason City. Though the case has remained in the public eye, no arrests or charges have been made in connection to the case.

Licensed private investigator Steve Ridge offered the reward as a private citizen. Ridge says the reward offer has the blessing of Huisentruit’s sister, JoAnn Nathe.

“I speak with JoAnn on a regular basis, and we have decided the timing is right to seek information on where Jodi’s body was discarded,” Ridge said. “This reward does not require an arrest or conviction — but simply the recovery of Jodi’s remains,” Ridge added.

Ridge believes that someone out there knows what happened to Jodi. It could easily be someone who bears no guilt or involvement but has knowledge they've been reluctant to share before, he said. He hopes that this reward would encourage someone to come forward.

“I am now extremely confident that multiple people know what happened to Jodi. Eventually, someone may decide to talk,” Ridge said in a news release. “We hope to encourage that possibility."

Trump’s top border adviser says he will bring back family detention

U.S. immigration authorities will once more put families with children in detention centers when President-elect Donald Trump returns to office next month, according to incoming White House “border czar” Tom Homan.

You are what you read. Reveal your 2024 reader type with Newsprint.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will look to hold parents with children in “soft-sided” tent structures similar to those used by U.S. border officials to handle immigration surges, Homan said. The government will not hesitate to deport parents who are in the country illegally, even if they have young U.S.-born children, he added, leaving it to those families to decide whether to exit together or be split up.

“Here’s the issue,” Homan said in a wide-ranging interview that included some of his most extensive comments to date on Trump’s plans for mass deportations. “You knew you were in the country illegally and chose to have a child. So you put your family in that position.”

President Joe Biden ended family detention in 2021, closing three facilities ICE called “residential centers” that offered about 3,000 beds. The facilities had a dorm-like design with recreational and educational programming. They were criticized by immigration advocates and pediatricians who said detention was harmful for children.

The federal judge who oversees immigration detention programs involving minors has set 20 days as the maximum amount of time children can be held at the family facilities. The deportation process often requires more time, so ICE has generally preferred to prioritize easier-to-remove adults. But Homan said that may change once Trump takes office.
“We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” he said. “How many beds we’re going to need will depend on what the data says.”

Homan will not be directing ICE operations as part of his White House role. But he will work closely on border and immigration issues with Kristi L. Noem, now governor of South Dakota and Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE.
As acting director of ICE during Trump’s first term, Homan drove the “zero tolerance” policy that separated more than 4,000 children from their parents soon after they crossed the border into the United States. He said Trump’s new enforcement campaign will seek to deport families together. But he acknowledged the government cannot remove children who are U.S. citizens, leaving it to parents to decide whether they would split up the family.
After retiring from ICE in 2018, Homan became a regular guest on Fox News, advocating the kind of unsentimental, unapologetic approach to immigration enforcement that seems to appeal to Trump. But of all the border hard-liners in the incoming administration, Homan is perhaps the most cognizant of the limits of the government’s ability to deliver on promises of mass deportation — and the potential for a political backlash. During a 34-year career at the U.S. Border Patrol and ICE, he saw wide swings in public support for immigration enforcement.

Would Not Bug Me if OSU, PSU, Mich & Oregon All Left B1G for a Super Conference

I had always wanted to keep the B1G intact but the Washington Coach said he had heard the NIL payrolls of both OSU and Oregon was $20 million each. Iowa can't compete against that. I realize our payout would drop by 50% or more but that is ok.

If the big name schools all left to be in a Super Conference, I am ok with that.

Iowa just needs to play MN, WI, IL, NW, NE and ISU for a fun season.

Celebrities you were disappointed to find out how they are off-screen

Title is poorly worded, but you know what I mean.

For me it has to be Chevy Chase. Seems Iike a funny, likable guy in all his films, but by all accounts he’s a miserable prick in real life.

How about you?

“Home Alone” director Chris Columbus said during an interview with Vanity Fair that it was ultimately Chevy Chase who opened the door for him to helm the 1990 Christmas comedy classic. That’s because Columbus was originally working with screenwriter John Hughes on 1989’s “Christmas Vacation,” starring Chase. Columbus was hired to direct the comedy and was in the middle of second unit shooting when he met Chase for the first time.

“I was signed on…and then I met Chevy Chase. Even given my situation at the time, where I desperately needed to make a film, I realized I couldn’t work with the guy,” Columbus said. “I was one of the many who couldn’t work with him. And I called John and I said, ‘This is really hard for me, but I can’t do this movie with Chevy Chase.’ We were in the midst of shooting second unit. We didn’t start shooting the movie or building sets. But it was December, so I had to go to downtown Chicago and shoot all of the department stores and all of that. I had two meetings with Chevy.”

“My first meeting with him, I sat down with him. It was just the two of us,” Columbus continued. “He had to know I was directing the movie. I talked about how I saw the movie, how I wanted to make the movie. He didn’t say anything. I went through about a half hour of talking. He didn’t say a word. And then he stops and he says—and this makes no sense to any human being on the planet, but I’m telling you. I probably have never told this story. Forty minutes into the meeting, he says, ‘Wait a second. You’re the director?’ And I said, ‘Yeah…I’m directing the film.’ And he said to me the most surreal, bizarre thing. I still haven’t been able to make any sense out of it. He said, ‘Oh, I thought you were a drummer.’ I said, ‘Uhh, okay. Let’s start talking about the film again.’ After about 30 seconds, he said, ‘I got to go.'”

Scientists Destroy 99% of Cancer Cells in Lab Using Vibrating Molecules

“Scientists have discovered a remarkable way to destroy cancer cells. A study published last year found stimulating aminocyanine molecules with near-infrared light caused them to vibrate in sync, enough to break apart the membranes of cancer cells.

"What needs to be highlighted is that we've discovered another explanation for how these molecules can work," said chemist Ciceron Ayala-Orozco from Rice University.

"This is the first time a molecular plasmon is utilized in this way to excite the whole molecule and to actually produce mechanical action used to achieve a particular goal – in this case, tearing apart cancer cells' membrane."
