*The House debated for over 9 hours on a bill that would supposedly allow arbitrators in salary disputes in schools to have more latitude. The bill wasn't going anywhere in the Senate.
*The Senate approved legislation making texting while driving a primary offense. If this moves along, and I have no idea why it won't, cops will be able to pull drivers over on the suspicion they are texting. Brad Zaun was one of only 6 Republicans that voted against it. He said you "Can't legislate common sense". Odd thing to say. Murder isn't common sense, but we make rules stating it's illegal anyway.
*Katie O'Bradovich was on the panel and she said she thinks Chuck Palmer, who is the head of the Dept. of Human Services, will be the sacrificial lamb in the fight over closing the state facilities in Clarinda and Mt. Pleasant. Say one thing about Terry Branstad. He's never been afraid to throw a pal under the bus if it keeps the stink from getting on him. Palmer must be reconfirmed this year, and their are rumblings several Republicans want Palmer gone.
*After scaling back commercial property taxes the financial stress is making school funding very hard. House Republicans refuse to move off of a 1.5 percent increase in funding. Democrats in the Senate have come down from 6 percent to 4 something.
*Don't take it for granted that Branstad will be able to stuff the Board of Regents with stealth candidates. With three open seats on the board he's intent on politicizing it.
*No funds have been approved for outdoor recreation and water quality improvements even though the voters approved this several years ago. It was tied to an unspecified future increase in the state sales tax. One of the panelists noted that like the gas tax several years ago, the Iowa Farm Bureau is now pushing quietly for the sales tax to go up, thereby funding more water quality improvement projects.

Kind of an odd session. It's an off year for elections, so you'd think with a split chamber and a governor with so few principles something would get done. But, besides a rapid push through of the increase of the gas tax very little has been accomplished.

Dozens of Northern California Catholic priests and church employees – some still working, others retired or deceased – are being publicly accused for the first time of sexually abusing children in their care. The allegations suggest startling new depths to the decades-long scandal that continues to rock the church and its followers.
Those new accusations – and many more – have surfaced in a wave of lawsuits washing over Catholic institutions across the state, including every Northern California diocese from Fresno to Santa Rosa. Some of the new filings allege cover-ups that protected accused predators and silenced victims.
The new names are absent from internal lists of suspected abusers that most Northern California Catholic dioceses have released in recent years.

People want stuff without paying for it. That is one thing that has really changed over the years, the people and businesses that dont want to pay taxes or more taxes but they want great infrastructure, roads, bridges, dams, airports, etc etc.

Reports said there was 3 million gallons of water stored high in the hills or whereever around LA. Well they need to pay to have 10-20 million gallons of water. This isnt rocket science.

They cant pump and use salt water but you sure as hell could have a large enough desalination program to maintain those 10-20 million gallons of emergency water supply.

I read the thread of the women yelling at Gov Newson about him trying to talk to the Prez. Yeah she was distressed but the LA fire protection plans are not the Gov's responsibility

These commitment ceremonies are silly anyway, but when the recruit says "For the next 3 to 4 years, I will be playing at X University," it makes me chuckle. Many of them with probably hit the transfer portal after their freshman year.

Anita Bryant, a former beauty queen and pop singer of the 1960s whose career led her to become a spokesperson for Florida oranges in the early ’70s and an evangelical crusader against gay rights later in that decade, died Dec. 16 at age 84, her family announced Thursday.
The family’s obituary for Anita Bryant Day, as she was known outside the public sphere, was published in her hometown newspaper, the Oklahoman, and said the singer-activist had died at home last month in Edmond, Oklahoma, surrounded by family and friends.
During her heyday as a public figure, Bryant was one of the most polarizing celebrities in America, vilified by much of the show business community for campaigning against what she viewed as a gay takeover of American culture, while being embraced as a hero by many religious conservatives.
