Hi guys—dunno if you remember me. I was the big “FREETHELEE” guy a couple years back.

This is important for Hawks wrestling fans: I was texting with Marinelli yesterday and he told me that 13 of the wrestlers went down to Miami together and are still there.

I’m spearheading some local grassroots efforts to help contain the now-proven Coronavirus spread in Iowa City, lobbying local and state officials and working with global epidemiologists to get their evidence shared with local govt officials. It’s looking like we will be in lockdown in Iowa City soon (world-wide, soon enough), as it’s the only way to stop the virus’s spread (according to world-wide experts working together through their professional social media channels).

I wish this were a joke or a dream. I know it sounds like a crazy Jeff Goldblum movie. But I’m the Jeff Goldblum character, frantically trying to warn everyone in government and in town about what is coming our way, based on expert advice from global epidemiologists and pandemic specialists who live in Iowa City and work at UI.

I’m really just trying to see if there’s anything we can do in our fan community to get these boys home before the lockdown starts. Private jet? Charter jet? What resources do we have at hand? B Nichols? Others?

to be clear, Bull didn’t ask for anything, but he said they were all trying to get back today or tomorrow and I’m worried about travel restrictions or the airlines getting shut down so employees can go home and shelter in place.

any thoughts about how we can get our boys home? I hate to see them out there so far from home with a nation-wide lockdown starting soon. Should be within a day or two.

Please take this seriously and no hoax bullshit right now. Trying to help our boys out—they’ve given us so much!

GO HAWKS

They should stay there for awhile. They've likely had far more exposure than the the garden variety Iowan. And no, we can't send them a single, red cent.

You will not stop the spread of the virus. Sorry, but you won't.

Dude, we are in complete agreement on that. The only way to stop is lockdown and stop it at those who are already infected.

Real talk: Iowa City actual infection count estimates are real bad. Multiple cases of community-acquired transmission that can’t get tested even with all symptoms and doctor request (going on 9 days), just because they didn’t travel recently. We’re talking hundreds or thousands already infected. We’re already on Day 16 of the exponential growth curve just from the known 21 Egyptian Cruisers who got back Mar 3.

Then the DJ in IC publically announced yesterday on FB that he was positive and had 12 gigs at 5 local bars/restaurants in the last two weeks (they contacted all five places to alert them).

Sadly, Iowa City is looking more and more like we are an outbreak epicenter. That’s why we’re working so hard to get everyone into their homes ASAP to stop infections from continuing to accrue in the community.

Saw them. They are good.
Local hospitals are prepared. tgey are not in danger and a 3 hour drive north can get them home if needs be.

Sorry. Overreaction.

UPDATE: Alex at least is back home in Iowa City now (just texted me). Not sure about the other 12, but if he made it back, sounds like they were able to travel without problem.

Everyone in Iowa City: get home and stay home as soon as you can, grab supplies and food on the way if possible. Lockdown could last months. No telling what the experts will decide is the best way to combat it after the initial wave of infections is past.

First priority is getting people out of public and workplaces (other than essential medical/social services and the food supply chain). That’s the only way to stop the exponential growth in new infections that is happening undetected all around us in Iowa City.

Holy overreaction Batman. Someone please tell Alex to be very careful what he texts this guy.

Sorry. Overreaction.
Thanks for the update! I just wanted to be sure they were OK, given the drastic changes we’re about to see to our lives starting today and tomorrow. Gotta have our boys safe—they’re important to our state morale!

Think what you want, man. Watch the news the next two days. Peace and safety to all of you.

I know it sounds nuts if you’re not already in the thick of it. But look around.

Everyone get home and stay home, please.

UPDATE: Alex says they got back fine today.

I hope you understand as you see more information coming out, finally permeating official government channels, why I was concerned for their safety and return home. A lockdown is coming very soon, for a very long time.

Please understand the risks of complacency bias in a large-scale disaster. We assume that because the world has always been a certain way, that it will continue to be that way in the future. Works pretty damn well most of the time. But in times of drastic and sudden upheaval or disaster, the inertia created by that complacency bias works against your own best interests. Psychologists estimate that as much as 70% of people in a world-wide disaster will refuse to believe what is happening, even as the evidence unfolds all around them that it is real. Our existing cognitive schema are often too strong to be upended without a slower process of acclimation and reinforcement from our trusted peer networks.

I also wanted to make sure this information was out in the Hawk fan community, so that it is in your heads when you see it being confirmed by news reports over the next few days.

Peace and health to all my fellow Hawks wrestling fans.

I can get behind this as long as we all understand the virus is not as dangerous as others. (H1M1 comes to mind and we did relatively nothing).

the changes coming are a reaction and PR. While the right thing to do....still more public reaction than fact.

On another note, if there is a Dr. that reads these boards, can you please get in touch with dagboi, he is in desperate need of valium.....and while you're at it, could you please send me some. I am not freaking out like this guy, but washed down with a 7&7 gives a whole new definition to CHILL'd.

Sorry man, didn't mean to pick on you, many are freaked, but you started this thread an hour ago saying AM was in FLA and less than an hour later he is now back in IC. That's like, space shuttle speed. In addition to that, I assume helping them return to Iowa would be some sort of NCAA impermissible benefit.

I'm in Ohio and we've been doing what you recommended for the last week plus. Sorry the IA governor didn't get a better jump on this, which is why my kid came home from IC.

Yes. It is my work and the truth. The spread is not understood totally but it is only a little more tough than the common flu ( which has 9,000+ deaths so far and not above the annual average. That started in January. Where was this when we hit 500 deaths?) and not very resistant to treatment or disinfection.

immune compromised, respiratory patients and elderly are more vulnerable but not by much more than regular flu.

The media is larger than ever. Social media is larger than ever. It is an election year.

Don’t get me wrong, one life saved by this nonsense is worth it. The panic is an overreaction and a lack of real information. Not saying it is not serious but am saying not much more so than most other years. Certainly less dangerous than ebola or H1N1.

I don’t much care if you agree. I do this for a living. Panic if you want to. Reasonable precautions are needed but a 4 to 16 week shut down is not.

I appreciate your perspective and understand that we all have to make our own decisions based on the information we have available to us. My only concern was the safety of our wrestlers and I am satisfied now that they are either safe back home already (Alex) or coming back on another flight tomorrow night.

I would encourage everyone not to act based on anyone’s partial and limited perspective (mine included!), but just to get home safe right now and wait to see what the pandemic, infectious disease, and epidemiological research communities tell us will be the safest path forward. I am basing all of my actions and statements on the network of pandemic and epidemiological experts that are working together right now to get our city shut down as fast as possible and save lives.

Plenty of time coming up at home to figure out what was really true and what was incorrect. And to rewatch Spencer Lee matches on an endless loop while sobbing about the cancelled Olympics.

I have one correction. Epidemiologists and infectious disease researchers are not the ones asking to shut things down. It is the government and local authorities that are driving that.

All the rest I can live with. At the end of the day, one life save makes it worth it.
And Ben Askren made a great point. Where do you think it’s nonsense or not, if people are staying home to read books, spend time with her kids and family, not a bad thing at all.

as frustrated as I am with the reaction versus the facts of the actual pathogen, I can agree that the world slowing down for a period of time could actually be a benefit.

This is some of the creepiest stuff I have seen. Pretty sure the ncaa might find a few violations with boosters etc getting the guys private jets etc. If Alex is indeed texting you he really needs to have a chat with you about your post on social media...There’s a much better way to go about this

You are incredibly lucky to be in Ohio. Your governor and State Health Dept. Director (Amy Acton) are the ONLY government that has taken the pandemic specialists’ advice seriously. They saved thousands of lives in Ohio and will be lauded as heroes for the courage, vision, and flexible thinking they showed.

I'm very supportive of slowing down but there will come a point that the risk and benefit aren't aligned. We risk illness, injury, death, etc. every day. People will need to work. There need to be jobs to come back to. Stuff like that. Where's that line? I have no idea. But if the goal is to "eliminate" this virus then I question what we are doing.

Spooner, I am a fan of yours. never have I agreed with you more.

I don’t think the goal is to “eliminate” the virus anymore. That ship has sailed. The majority of us (up to 80%) will get infected eventually. 20% of those will be hospitalized. These measures are simply not to overwhelm our healthcare, emergency response, and supply chain industries. It remains to be seen whether it will work. World leaders have quite a predicament, either let many die or crash their economies. I have no idea where that line is either.

Agreed. But the OP said he's trying to stop the virus. That's what I have been commenting on in this thread. Locking everyone up until no one dies is just not logical.

This times 1000. We are going to destroy jobs, the economy and lives (suicide rates will sky rocket) by indefinite shutdown, and I wonder how much worse the death rate for this really is than the flu. In Germany the death rate is 0.25%, similar to the flu. What are they doing differently? Testing more people, not just the really sick ones, this gives a more accurate account of the mortality. We should be taking measured to prevent spread, but the radical hysteria is over the top and will ruin lives in other ways.

In the end trying to run and hide from the virus may end up having a much larger long-term impact on our country than the virus itself.

The OP (me) said I am working with a group of epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists (some from UI) to try to stop the ongoing and rampant SPREAD of Coronavirus in Iowa City right now. I agree it will not be stopped until a vaccine is developed and widely distributed, a la smallpox.

Is it so hard to believe that there are a group of coordinated Hawkeyes from a range of fields out here busting our asses to try to save as many of our fellow Hawkeyes’ lives as we can?

You guys would do the exact same thing if you were in my shoes right now. It’s gonna be effin bad, boys....

I think it is more likely the OP has eaten some mushrooms and just thinks he is texting with Alex.

Alex reached out to me, Chuckles. But thanks for mocking me while I tried to help ensure the safety of our wrestlers. Yes, an over-abundance of caution. I’m doing the best that I can, just like all of us here....

In the end trying to run and hide from the virus may end up having a much larger long-term impact on our country than the virus itself.

The problem is, that we are in the acceleration phase of the infection.
Today 1748 new cases
Yesterday 983 new cases
Day before 737 new cases
Before 696 new cases
before 550 new cases
It is partly because we are testing more, but also partly because we are just now starting to take this seriously.
South Korea and Japan are the two countries that did immediate "draconian" measures, and both have flattened the curve.
We need to look at their model, vs Italy and China's model.

Please define "lockdown" and "for a very long time". I'd like to know how many squirrels I must kill to sustain myself.

Perhaps due to the complexity of the issue and my own poor ability to express myself the point was lost. The point was simply that at some point the cost of not going back on with our lives would exceed the cost of trying to save a very small part of the population made up of the sick and elderly. Because at some point the masses will need work, food on the shelves, etc. Not saying we are close to that but hopefully good decisions are made when that time comes.

Keep up the good work.
