150yr old oak in Coralville.

Beautiful oak near my house, looks like it's about to collapse, except it's looked this way for 30+yrs.

I am sitting inside, and I can see light all along the base.

That’s a big one. It is amazing how a little bit of living structure is enough for a massive tree to remain standing. There is literally just a few inches of active cells in that large diameter.
Pretty pooch. Is that a border collie mix?

It's almost as if the tree has compensated for the lack of "core" by widening its base, if that's even possible.
 
Aah, Aussie. Such an amazing breed.
Is there much live crown left in the big oak? The roots and leaves will die out in pretty equal amounts as they begin decline...

Absolutely, It's lush as could be. You wouldn't see anything unusual until you've walked right upon it.
