This will be the first time in 32 years that Iowa has gone unbeaten in nonconference play.

The last time it happened? Tom Davis' FIRST YEAR as Iowa head coach, in 1986.

You know what it's time for? A raise, an extension, and larger buy out!

While it looks likely that we will be undefeated in non-conference play this team in no way compares to the team that beat Indiana by scoring over 100 points on a Bobby Knight defense and was 18-0 before the first loss.

We are still 0-2 in conference with no easy games on the horizon. We have to steal a road victory just to get back on track.

I really do hope that we are a good team this year but it gets tiring believing in any Hawk team and then watching turn to crap. Even the Tom Davis team you mentioned blow a huge 2nd half lead in the tournament to UNLV.

If the other Fran gets us. 14 - 6 record in conference then we can talk about extensions and raises.

Fran's Big Ten record in 8.3 years 68-78.

Alfords Big Ten record in 8 years was 61-67.

One was encouraged to leave by Gary Barta. The other was given an extension last year with a ridiculous contract buyout which he withheld from the media and fans and was only discovered by a FOIA request.

I thought about the very same thing last night. A win @ Purdue would be a nice beginning. But Painter is a tough act. If we play with intensity on the defensive end as we have, then I think we'll have a decent shot going forward.

You can’t hold the first two years against Fran in this comparison.

Alford was handed a team coming off a sweet sixteen, albeit one that had a lame duck coach that didn’t recruit for a year. And was coaching in an era where the Big Ten was pretty much as bad as it had ever been.

Fran was handed a dumpster fire, plus an overweight because of Lick’s coaching desires Gatens. And has been coaching during a bit of a renaissance of the Big Ten. Not as good as previous eras, but much better than last decade.

Fran still has a lot to prove and we’re seeing progress this year that will buy him some more time to prove it. Plus he’s been doing things right by not having players get into any serious trouble. But don’t come here saying Alford was treated poorly compared to Fran. Alford did less with more by far. 1 NCAA win total. Wasted two preseason all-Americans in 2002-2003 with an NIT appearance. Wasted his only good year with a Big Ten runner up and blown 3 seed while having some of the best Iowan high school players that stayed in state in a decade as 4th year players.

Oh and Alford turned a school with a long and proud tradition in basketball into a “football school” with his blown seasons and the Pierre Pierce fiascos.

The more I watch Purdue, the more I think it it is a huge opportunity for the Hawks.

I’m not sure what Purdue does during practice offensively: The shoot a wild 3 in the first 5 seconds of the shot clock is an interesting offense to watch.

Edwards might score 50 on us, but I like our chances with the shot selection I’ve seen so far from them. Hound Edwards, stick on Cline’s hip; then make the rest of the team beat you, or make Edwards do it all.

To summarize: I feel Painter has done a terrible job with this team, and has given Edwards too much control, where teammates are frozen out. Very winnable road game.

Tell me how things went after 1986.

Tell me what I inherited in 2010.

While you type that up, I am gonna text Barta reminding me of my historic achievement!

32 years, baby!

Fran's Body of work is not as impressive as he thinks. Instead of acknowledging responsibility for Last year's debacle, he dismissed the reporter that brought up "Hot Seat" issues last year. Clearly Fran is better than Lickliter but really on par with Alford.

The two epic season ending collapses and consistent record of failure in B1G tourney detract from a modest B1G record.

Alford was not handed a Sweet 16 team. Most of the team you mentioned was gone after the 1998-99 season. Just take a look at the roster of Alford's first team. Other than Dean Oliver and Jacob Jaacks, not a whole lot there.

That said, I do agree that Fran has been better in conference with a few 12-6 records. Alford and Fran have pretty similar resumes at Iowa, though, overall. Especially when you compare NCAA tournament results. He has exactly one more tournament win than did Alford in the same amount of time. Big deal.

Alford won the Big 10 tournament twice, and another run to the title game. Fran has been lucky to reach the quarterfinals.

This is not in defense of Alford.. I haven't forgotten how uninspiring his tenure was. But Fran hasn't done a lot to outperform him, either. He's had plenty of time.

How many of Fran's players have been guilty of committing felonies while on scholarship? I'm not thrilled with Barta, but I'm glad that he seems to reward coaches for promoting "good citizenship". It's never been clear how much Alford knew about the Pierce incident and how truthful he was with the administration.

The team won the games on their schedule.

However, how many of those nonconference wins are vs teams that will be in the NCAA tourney? 1?

Fran's tenure at Iowa is marked by 2 different periods of Big Ten strength and lack thereof. His first 4 seasons, the Big Ten finished 1st/1st/1st/2nd in KenPom conference ranks. It was clearly the best conference in the country over that 4 year stretch. The last 4 seasons, the Big Ten has finished 4th/5th/4th/5th and has been clearly down overall compared to that previous 4 years.

Interestingly, the years from 2011-2014 are the only seasons in the KenPom era (since 2002) that the Big Ten finished 1st or 2nd overall. A 3rd place finish in 2007 is the only other finish better than 4th. This season the Big Ten seems pegged to likely finish 2nd which is obviously the best in a while.

I agree with you. Carsen's gonna get his, but Ryan (Cline) is not very consistent IMO. Defense. You're correct. AND we need to put Garza, Cook, and Kriener in Haarm's way!

Barta doesn’t want to fire Fran while his kids are in the program. Fran has shown enough to be a competent coach and good fit from a basketball style standpoint (I really think Iowa needs to play fast...different than being fast although that would be nice as well).

Fran getting his kids, very good players at that, in the program was him telling Barta “we are committed to Iowa” and the contract w big buyout was Gary saying “we are committed to you”.

The only way Fran goes is if the bottom falls completely out (see last year a few repeating a few more times) or of Barta gets the boot.

Fran Da Man,
I am not sure if you are joking or really believe that this non conference record is that impressive.

I agree that I did not believe we would beat Oregon and UConn as we did. However they were teams with talented freshman and a team led by juniors often beat inexperienced players. I don’t know if I would want Iowa to face either of those teams again as their experience begins to match their talent.

iSU was a nice win but they are missing players that will make them tougher as the season wears on.

The UNI team we just beat was not the ones we have used to. To me it feels like this Iowa team is “fools gold” until we can start winning the games on the road.

I want to believe in this team - I really do but I can’t shake the feeling that we have done this dance before with Fran’s teams.

The collapse of previous years when we looked like a top ten team has never been explained. Fran”s team seem to lack toughness. I am extremely encouraged by Connor and Joe who seem to understand what it takes to win but they are freshman and have a lot of growing to do.

The soul crushing loss at Michigan State and the one that got away with Wisconsin still haunt us.

If we can win at our “most hated rival’s” place then it is a start.

If you seldom play a team with a pulse, going undefeated is meaningless. Michigan State has lost a couple of games, but to national powers, so who's better? Well, we got that answer a while back in East Lansing.

Finish over .500 in the Big Ten, and then Iowa will have something to talk about. Otherwise, beating Savannah State and company ain't even worth turnin' the lights on for.

If he is undefeated against non conference opponents in April I am ok with it! :)

Going undefeated in the non conference part of the schedule is a very good, very positive, accomplishment. I know it's hard for the haters to acknowledge that, but that is a fact. It seems like one of the better non con slates we've had in a while and NO ONE (including optimistic me) thought we would get through undefeated.
