So I was looking through the lineup for next season and got me thinking about potential starters. Also, hearing some other talk about the size of Marinelli and Young (and now Bradley since he's arrived at Iowa) and it got me thinking about this.

Note: we know Brands has never started a true freshman straight out of high school, so this probably isn't that realistic, but it's fun to speculate...

125 - Gilman
133 - Clark
141 - Turk/Kemerer
149 - Sorensen/Kemerer
157 - St John/Sorensen/Marinelli
165 - Paddock/St John/Marinelli/Young
174 - Meyer
184 - Brooks
197 - Holloway/Bradley
285 - Stoll

Think this all depends on a few things.

1) What weight is BS going next year. Is 149 going to be hard for him to maintain 4 years? Will Kemerer force BS to 157? I don't know. Right now I'm sure BS is taking it to Kemerer, but in 6 months things could change. If BS stays 149 I think we could see Kemerer go 141. If BS moves to 157 then Kemerer will take over at 149 and we will probably see Marinelli RS and Paddock go at 165.

2) Marinelli said after Conflict that he hasn't ruled out 157 for next year and it will depend on how this year goes cutting to 160. If he can make 157 next year and BS wants to stay at 149 then I think we see our first true freshmen under Brands. 165 would probably go to Paddock next year.

3) I would think that Bradley will be enrolling at Kirkwood for the spring semester and training with HWC so that he can transfer that following year to Iowa and RS. So I would think we see Holloway at 197 next year. Plus we don't even know what weight Bradley will be going.

I have a hard time believing Bradley is even a remote consideration at 197, regardless of how much "smaller" he got while on his mission. Nobody is forcing Sorensen anywhere but Sorensen.

Bradley is reportedly at 245 lbs. so forget 197.

I agree on Sorensen. I don't see why Kemerer isn't an option at 157.

I know, it is a crazy lineup thread. But why not suggest Stoll cut to 141 while you're at it?

Well, 245 to 197 is pretty crazy, so bada-bing bada-boom I guess!

Where are you reportedly seeing or getting the 245 at if you don't mind me asking SPOONER.

Why do people speculate on next season and not enjoy the current season especially when only one week into the current season? I don't get it at all. Serious question for the ones that do this help me out here.

I'm always interested in what the team will look like in the future, in addition to the current season.

Because most people have the cognitive ability to consider and discuss both the present and the future, especially in completely separate threads on an Internet message board.

The current season was the future last year.

Has coach Brands never started a true freshmen because a true freshmen has never won the spot outright? Or has a true freshmen been the best man for the weight but Coach Brands still redshirts just because?

How does that lineup compare to PSU's?

125 - Suriano?
133 - Cortez
141 - Gulibon
149 - Retherford
157 - Joseph/Nolf
165 - Nolf/Joseph
174 - Nickal/Hall
184 - Hall/Nickal
197 - McCutcheon
HWT - Nevills

This is purely a guess. This could be a tough group to beat if it's accurate.

Then imagine a year later if they would happen to align the stars and add Spencer Lee to this mix.

DSJ is the only Iowa wrestler under Brands that I can think of who arguably would have won the starting spot as a true freshman. He went 26-4 in open tournaments in 2010 at 157, placing 5th at Midlands. Janssen and Kerr battled for the starting spot. Janssen went 12-4, didn't place at Midlands. Kerr went 14-11, including 2-2 at NCAAs; he also didn't place at Midlands. Alas, we didn't need the team points that year anyway.

Good stuff! Thank you

Brandon Sorensen in 2013-2014 says hi. 24-4 with a win over Grothus at Midlands.

Need Kemerers and Marinellis up and down the lineup to beat that lineup. Can't have any holes. Can't have any pretty-goods or coming-arounds or just-needs-to-buy-into-the-programs.

Yes but at the time the gap between the two wasn't worth burning BS shirt. Just my opinion. Think will only see Brands start a freshmen when he is destroying all others at that weight in the room.

IA wrestle interviewed Bradley and he said he weighs 240-245. Which was his HS weight approximately. He added that he plans on lifting and putting on muscle and would like to compete in the 260lb range. He's going to bounce around between training in PA and the Hawkeye room as NCAA rules allow.

Agree. And could've said the same thing about DSJ in 2010.

FWIW the word from Graham people recently is that Marinelli will go 160 for Ironman and then 170 the rest of the year. Works out better for the team that way as Marinelli can beat everyone else on the schedule without much of a problem up at 170 and it then allows his less talented teammates to go their more ideal weights.

I'm taking a stab at this also.....
125-Gilman
133-Clark
141-Turk
149-Sorensen
157-Kemerer
165-Marinelli (have a feeling he gets into the room and makes Brands put him in there)
174-Meyer
184-Brooks
197-Holloway
285-Stoll

197 being the only question mark with this lineup, points galore at Midlands, Big Tens and NCAAs. Multiple champs for all events also.
