2017 Roster at 14 schollies + Connor; MUST be down to 13 by 1st day of classes of Fall 2017 semester

Somebody is going to transfer for playing time. That's the nature of college basketball. Fran may not know who yet but it's inevitable.

and technically nobody has signed Letter of intents yet (which happens when again?).

also, when does a DIvision I team have to be down to the 13 scholarship limit?

When was the last time Iowa was in a situation like this? I can't recall any

We had a discussion similar to this in June, I believe, only then the concern was unbalanced classes. I think we see now that with the current environment of college basketball there is no point getting excited until the paint is dry.

And let me add that regarding how fifteen guys are going to fit into thirteen roster spots let me just say at this time, "Wet Paint!"

Here are the options in descending order, most likely to least. Yes, this is just my opinion. But I hope we don't have to keep throwing this frozen turkey of a subject into the stove before things thaw out!

1. Two players transfer. Thirteen scholarships, thirteen guys, problem solved. Not only that but there is a slight chance two guys remaining will be seniors in 2017/18 Uhl and Jones. If that happens we have a scholarship for Wieskamp and one open spot for someone like Joey Hauser or whomever we go after.

2. If only one player transfers Conner could walk-on, or as he has mentioned he could choose a Prep School for a year.

3. Should no one leave, you got the Conner options and Dale Jones who after five years in school should graduate. He HAS been cleared for a sixth year. But hey, John Beilein sent Graduates Max Bielfeldt and Spike Albrecht out the last two seasons to find a different school and no one is hanging Beilein from the rafters for it.

So in conclusion. No one will be denied a scholarship until they graduate. No one is going to have the promise of a four year plan taken away. Not even Jones. And if anyone wants to split hairs on that please provide a link to where you slammed Beilein for doing the same thing.

This is the first time that under McCaffery Iowa has come close to over-recruiting. And with a stable and practical plan such as I've shown I don't see anything wrong with it. Many schools do this based on players going pro or leaving such as the examples I gave of Michigan. I'll repeat again, no one with have a scholarship removed unless they've graduated.

With football I think it's the start of fall practice, which is before the start of fall semester. With basketball starting after the start of the fall, I'd think as long as fall semester starts with 13 on scholarship, they're good. I know they don't have to be at 13 anytime this school year (ie. early or late signing period, NCAA Tourney or anything of the like).

Not that I want people to transfer, but...

They have 11 players that are listed as either FR or SO (including RS like Baer/Ellingson). Given the realities of the basketball landscape these days, I think it's unrealistic to think someone won't transfer. There were 700ish transfers last year and 351 schools. Chances are really good there will be at least one.

However, until Jones is cleared and actually plays, we also won't know how he'll affect the mix either. Maybe there are three openings and all three incoming FR end up with scholarships. Who knows?

So you're saying Fran will "Crean" somebody?

Considering it's been thrown around so much that I'm not sure the actually definition of "Creaning". I do think Fran will sit down with every player after the seasons and list out the good/bad/ugly and come up with a plan or recommendation for each.

For one/some/a few, that may be "you know, you're probably not going to see much action next season. If you want to stick around anyway and put the work in but possibly not get rewarded publicly that much, fine, we'll give you the same attention and treatment we give everyone else. However, if you'd like to look around and see what opportunities there are for you out there, we as a staff and university will do everything we can to assist and support you through that process."

If that's considered "Creaning", then yes, I think that will definitely happen.

Gosh, I hope it is Ellingson and not Jones. Jones is maybe even the better shooter (at least in real games, when it counts) and gets rebounds. Jones is athletic and 6'9" tall! Ellingson ... isn't.

Brady could/should transfer to Drake and be a star in the Valley.

I think playing time this season will weed out one or more of the younger guys and they will want to transfer on their own. There is no reason to call Fran a Creaner if he has Jones pay his own way next year. He already will have two years at Iowa and 2 or 3 more years at other colleges. He has already received his 4 year requirement and will likely have a degree from Iowa before BB season next year. Telling him he has to pay his own way for a 6th year is not Creaning.

I agree with this. Not that the kid doesn't deserve it. I think most of us agree he does. But he was already willing to pay his own way through to be a Hawkeye. Who is to say he won't do it to make the team better?
I think it's more likely that Dale Jones won't be on scholarship for his sixth year. Dale will have had 2 years on scholarship which was the original commitment from Fran/Iowa.

How do they do scholarships for baseball? Could Conner get a full ride in baseball, and walk on to basketball?

Baseball has only 11.7 scholarships to divvy out among the maximum 35-player roster. This is the same for every Division I baseball team. Very few college baseball players get a full athletic ride, it's just too much of the total scholarship pie for a coach to devote to one player. Most baseball players (if good students) get a combination of athletic and academic aid. But many baseball players are also paying a significant portion of their tuition and room/board to play in college. If Conor plays baseball, he will be receiving zero scholarship dollars from baseball. If a scholarship player plays dual sports of baseball and basketball, he has to count against the limit of the basketball roster.

Right, you aren't recruiting over people when their 6th year was a surprise. This has happened to other big ten schools lately and they were free to go elsewhere, even in the conference.

Hard to call the 6th year a "surprise" when the two commitments happened long after they knew the 6th year was granted. I don't have a problem with it, just saying I didn't think your theory held water.

From HawkCentral:

Overbooked scholarships

If everybody except Jok returns next season and all of Iowa’s Class of 2017 commitments sign in November, the Hawkeyes will be at 15 scholarship players for 13 available scholarships.

A conundrum for McCaffery?

“It's not a conundrum until it is,” the seventh-year Hawkeye coach said. “We've got time.”

There’s almost always attrition in college basketball with an average of two transfers per Division I team in 2015. Iowa lost two players off last year’s team. Things happen.

Plus, one of the three incoming recruits is McCaffery’s oldest son, Connor, who could walk on and receive academic aid. Connor also wants to play baseball at Iowa, and he took an official visit for that sport last week.

“He's on board; he gets it,” McCaffery said. “(Baseball), that's a whole other deal. But I'm going to support him either way, whatever he wants to do.”

Maybe Cook averages 20 and 10 this year as part of a two headed monster with Jok, leading Iowa to a national championship game in which Dale Jones hits the game-winner. Jones decides to forego his final year of eligibility and ride off an Iowa legend, and Cook decides to go pro.

Problem solved.

Baseball scholarship would count against basketball.

Wonder if that would hold true if it was just a partial ship?

My guess is even if Heller was going to offer McCaffery some money it would be wise for him to just walk on to the baseball team if he still wants to play basketball for his dad. This way he could choose which sport he wants to make the bigger priority OR if he is that good at baseball and he wants to push his chips all in on that sport I wish him well and will cheer him on like crazy on the diamond...either way it is good for Iowa.

Just bc he was granted a 6 year for eligibility reasons does not mean he will be given a scholarship for that sixth year. I believe it is pretty well documented that this is probably Dale's last year on scholarship at Iowa if another ship doesn't open up via transfer.

Fran is going to want Jones for that 6th year to replace Jok's 3pt shooting. Since Jones has already been cleared to go 100%, don't be surprised if Jones is starting by B1G play.

Put me in the camp that says a transfer is likely enough that it will take care of the issue. Playing time and the post season sit down with Fran will almost surely sort this out.

Jones says he is open to going pro or taking advantage of the graduate transfer year rule. Pretty sure that is where the scholly is coming from next year.

If he doesn't go pro, I'd think Fran might want to keep his 3pt shooting on the team, especially since Jok will be gone.

Calipari is ruining college basketball.

What is Calipari doing to ruin basketball? I mean he's pretty scummy on the recruiting front, but that's nothing new. That existed before Calipari and will be going strong well after he's through.

. Nothing

I actually like the Calipari situation. Nothing better than watching top recruiting class after top recruiting class fail to win the title. Then watching them walk out the door and Cal having to start all over again. I can watch that rerun as many times as it takes until Kentucky gets pissed and sends him packing.
