2019-2020 Expectations

Nick Baer played 19 minutes a game last season. He played very valuable minutes. P-Mac will likely try to fill the exact same role as Baer.

I agree that Weezy should be our focal point next year, but we dont have anyone else on the roster who can play the 3. Injuries and fouls are always a problem for forwards. If P-Mac can ball, he will be crucial next year.

Nick Baer played 19 minutes a game last season. Good discussion....I look at it from this perspective. Baer was a utility knife..played some Wing and some PF...he was clearly a spark off of the bench and I would guess that his numbers were usually pretty efficient. I also agree with what you said about Joe W above (focal point) and I think that equates to him playing most of the minutes at the 3 but possibly some 2 if the game or the situation calls for it. So, I also think Patrick could be a spark off of the bench..I think he could be a decent defender at the 3 even as a freshman.

I don't know if Patrick will get 19 minutes...but I again agree with you, he will be crucial..I think he will play an important role next year and part of that is filling the role that Baer filled. Baer's PF minutes I am guessing will be filled by the 2 guys at the PF position.

I think the combination of Patrick, Nunge and Pemsl will more than take up the minutes that Baer used. Patrick will back up the 3, and Pemsl and Nunge will take up the 4 minutes along with Kriener. I don't think we'll see an undersized 4 much this year.

Funny how a lot of posters here don't even mention Patrick Mccaffery. Is this forgetfulness? Or just an assumption that the fourth highest rated recruit in Fran's era will be so ineffective that he'll have to redshirt?

Fine, he's too skinny. But JoeT is 5'11, 165 lb. CJF is 6'4, 165 lb. Pemsl has a knee built from MacGyver scraps. These guys all have glaring physical flaws. It seems like Pat's biggest problem isn't his weight but his dad's unlikeability.

Bullshit.

Which part...?

About PMac's biggest problem being Fran's unlikeability.

He's a freshman. It's unlikely and unfair to Patrick to expect him to come in and have a major role right away. And yes, his weight is a factor.

I'm sure he'll be a very good player in time. But I know this fan base very well. They'll pump up a player or team with ridiculous expectations and when those expectations aren't met they become pretty hostile and frankly rather stupid.

I completely agree that we shouldn't inflate expectations to Cook or Woodbury levels. I don't think P-Mac will be a superstar his first year. I also agree that you don't want to put too much stock in recruiting evaluations. But you can put some stock in it. Its not unreasonable to expect him to contribute next year. CJF and JoeT also are unproven first years with physical concerns but you didn't have a problem with people talking about their contributions in this thread.

Like you said, fans can be hostile and there seems to be a little hostility already brewing for Pat. Your "bullshit" response above seems to prove the point.

I do have a problem with expectations for those two and have said so either in this thread or another.

I am cautiously optimistic both will be good, but fans need to pump the brakes.

The AllHawkeyes Podcast interview with Fran......he said some really good things about CJ and Nunge accorcing to Suterman.....I have to find the time to listen to it...that might reduce some of the fears.

Fans pumping the brakes on expectations is overrated. Fans being all in with the program is underrated. There is joy to be experienced and I won't miss out.

There's only 2 kinds of seasons: going for it or rebuilding. We are going for it this season so I am ALL IN. Don't worry if Iowa doesn't meet my expectations, I can handle it.

It will be just like the Cubs a few years ago. 'Sure glad that they did it but I have to admit that I gave up on 'em.' NOT ME!!! At no point did I have anything but 100% confidence in victory.

I expect BIG BIG BIG things and it's gonna be SWEET when they happen!! But go ahead and not get excited, look for a 5th place showing and be glad when they outperform your expectations. Just don't tell me what to do!!

Without any grad transfers, Iowa will finish in the lower 1/2 of the Big 10 and will be under .500 in the preseason with the tough schedule they have this year. Their record will likely be worse than 2 years ago, imo, and might not make even the NIT. The loss of both Cook and Moss was too much to have a decent record given the schedule they will be facing.
I'm not sure I get all the nashing of teeth over the loss of Moss. Guy was the absolute definition of inconsistent. He had decent averages because he'd throw in a good game every one or two out of half dozen, then he'd disappear for 2 weeks. Maybe I'll be totally wrong, but just don't see it at this juncture.....

I agree. Patrick will be an issue on several fronts. I just hope that if he is truly really not ready to make some decent contributions, that he redshirts. That is, no one is equal or better to take the minutes.

That noted, the way Fran has recruited, or the lack thereof, he is placing Patrick in a position to play - by need. Only 10 scholarship players...err...11, may make it more likely that we need bodies. Because of injuries, the way Fran loves to play a lot of players, etc.

Patricks best years will be his junior and senior seasons, without a doubt. Yes, that is obvious. But if he redshirts, that will turn into his sophomore, junior AND senior seasons... It will also eliminate the flack that will be coming next year, if he plays. Much like Connor avoided had he played his freshman season.

Patrick does have the skills to make a difference. If he makes the weight goals he has, he’ll play.

Patrick was a top 70 recruit best player in the State I don’t get all the negativity. How would we be feeling if Patrick went to Kansas, Notre Dame, Michigan or even Duke? Then the fan base would be on Fran because he couldn’t sign his own son. Seems he’s damn if he do and damn if he dont.

Patrick has been asked about the redshirt possibility considering his slight build. He himself has admitted it’s a possibility if he doesn’t meet weight goals by the fall. To me, that’s the only thing keeping him from being a difference-maker this fall. In a role I see as Baer 2.0.
